Matt Eberflus emerging as favorite for Cowboys defensive coordinator
The Chicago Bears have found their new head coach in Ben Johnson, and now their former head coach Matt Eberflus has found a new landing spot in the NFC.
According to NFL insider Ed Werder, Eberflus has emerged as a candidate for the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator job under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.
Eberflus served as Chicago's head coach for the past three seasons, where he accumulated a 14-32 record, including a franchise-long 14-game losing streak that spanned the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Eberflus was fired following another disastrous clock management fiasco on Thanksgiving against the Detroit Lions.
This would be Eberflus' second stint with the Cowboys after serving as their linebackers coach (2011-17) and passing game coordinator (2016-17). He then served as the Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator (2018-21) before joining the Bears as head coach (2022-24).
While Eberflus struggled as a head coach, particularly in game management situations, he proved to be a great defensive coordinator. So it's no surprise that he could get another chance as a defensive coordinator with the Cowboys.
If hired, Eberflus will have a chance to face his former team when the Bears play the Cowboys in 2025.
