Could a reunion with Khalil Mack make sense for the Bears?
Stud pass rusher Khalil Mack, who has spent time with the Oakland Raiders, Chicago Bears, and most recently Los Angeles Chargers, plans to return for the 2025 season.
The former Defensive Player of the Year will be an unrestricted free agent. Mack, who will turn 34 before next season, will hit free agency for the first time in his career, and it stands to wonder if there could be a reunion with Chicago on the horizon.
Despite having over $80 million in cap space, plenty of draft capital including four picks in the Top 75 selections of the 2025 NFL draft, the Bears have several holes on the roster that need to be addressed, including pass rusher.
With the arrival of Ben Johnson as the Bears' head coach, there is certainly going to be interest from players around the league who may look to join the team with the injected enthusiasm surrounding the coaching moves made this offseason.
As a team, the Bears finished with 40 sacks, being led by their own star pass rusher Montez Sweat, who had a disappointing 5.5 on the year, and second-year defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr., who finished with 5.0. Chicago acquired Sweat from the Washington Commanders in a mid-season trade in 2023, where he led both the Bears (6.0) and Commanders (6.5) sacks. But in 2024, the sack numbers were not there amid injury and team struggles.
In the past three seasons, Mack has totaled 31 sacks with the Chargers, his best season coming in 2023 when he compiled 17 sacks. At this stage in his career, Mack may be most interested in joining a Super Bowl contender, so it would be up to the Bears, let by Johnson, and the front office to make the ultimate sales pitch to shore up their defensive pass rush and bringing back a beloved name.
