Could a Crystal Palace defender be in Manchester City’s sights?

One area of the pitch where Manchester City have been exposed this season is their defence. City’s defence has been poor this season, to put it mildly. They have conceded goals at an alarming rate although injuries haven’t helped Pep Guardiola’s side this season. But it does appear to be one area that will be looked at when Manchester City’s squad rebuild starts in the coming months. To fix City’s defensive woes a Crystal Palace defender has been named as a potential target for Manchester City.

That player is Marc Guehi and he would immediately strengthen City’s defence if they did pursue the England international. At 24 years of age, Guehi is the right age to be a part of City’s defensive rebuild. He is also a key player for England. As Crystal Palace’s captain, he also has the leadership skills required to be a pivotal player for Pep Guardiola’s side. He has shown throughout his young career that he is one of the better young English defenders in the game. As a player, he’d tick a lot of boxes required to play for Manchester City.

A report from Mick Brown for Football Insider suggests that the Crystal Palace defender is a target for Manchester City. In an interview published on Football Insider Brown had this say about Manchester City’s reported interest in Marc Guehi: “One player I’m told they’re very interested in is Marc Guehi, from Crystal Palace. He’s improved consistently at Palace and he’s still getting better and better, he’s intelligent in posession, he’s not the tallest but he deals well with his opponents, and he’s England’s starting centre-back which counts for a lot. And, he gives you 100% every week, he’s a leader on the pitch with his actions and he sets the standards for his teammates to follow.

Marc Guehi would be a quality addition to Manchester City’s defence.

As mentioned above Marc Guehi would be a quality addition to Manchester City’s defence. He ticks nearly every box required of a centre-back to play in Pep Guardiola’s squad. The fact that he’s Premier League-proven and English is also a bonus. The fact that the Manchester City squad needs homegrown players makes Guehi a tempting option for the world champions.

His contract situation also lends itself to a potential move. As per Football Insider’s report the Crystal Palace defender only has 18 months left on his current deal. That means come the summer he could be available for a decent price. Newcastle and Liverpool are also interested in the defender as per the Football Insider report. If Manchester City deem Guehi as the player they want to strengthen their defence they may have to move quickly to get their man. That’s now a story to monitor going forward.

A rebuild of Manchester City’s defence is coming in the coming months. Marc Guehi could be the ideal player to step into City’s defence. Circumstances surrounding the Crystal Palace defender do lend themselves to a potential move for the England international. Whether or not Manchester City move for the England international remains to be seen.
