Could Chiefs lose their defensive coordinator to head-coaching job? Suitors are calling

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo during the first quarter against the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.

Add defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to the list of Chiefs personnel being interviewed for jobs with other teams this week.

Multiple outlets reported the New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders requested interviews with Spagunolo about their head coaching vacancies.

Spagnuolo, the Chiefs’ defensive boss since 2019, has won three Super Bowl rings in Kansas City and a fourth as the New York Giants’ coordinator in 2007.

He’s the only coordinator in NFL history to win Super Bowls with two different teams, and the only coordinator — defense or offense — with four rings.

Spagnuolo, 65, was head coach of the St. Louis Rams from 2009-11, going 10-38. He also went 1-3 as the New York Giants’ interim coach in 2017.

Spagnuolo’s defenses have finished in the top 10 in points allowed in five of his six seasons with the Chiefs, and in yards allowed in 2023 and 2024.

Good Morning Football’s Peter Schrager reported Wednesday the Jets conducted an in-person interview with Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi, who also is expected to interview with the Tennessee Titans.

Schrager also reported the Jets interviewed Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy for their head coaching job via zoom.
