Could the Canadiens Pick Up A Right-Shot Blueliner On Waivers?

The Montreal Canadiens are having a tough time in their own zone this season, and a lack of right-shot defenseman is certainly not helping. This Summer, GM Kent Hughes traded Jonathan Kovacevic away to make room for Logan Mailloux on the right side, but it turns out Mailloux is not quite ready for the big show just yet.

As a result, the Canadiens only have David Savard and Justin Barron as right-shot defenseman. The former is starting to feel the weight of his 34 years which is perfectly normal while the latter has yet to blossom into the puck-moving defenseman with an offensive upside Hughes thought he would be when he sacrificed Artturi Lehkonen to get him.

For lack of a better option, Martin St-Louis has been using a couple of defensemen on their off-side to complete his lineup. Kaiden Guhle has been used there for a long time and he's doing it reasonably well, but it's a bit trickier for Jayden Struble. Still, tonight, he will be dressed while Barron, the real righty, will be sat for a fourth game in a row.

We've heard about Hughes shopping for some help in the form of a top four defenseman over the last few years and an interesting option has just become available. The Nashville Predators put right-shot defenseman Dante Fabbro on waivers today.

The 26-year-old was the Preds first-round pick and 17th overall selection at the 2016 draft. He has played with the Tennessee outfit for the last seven seasons but now finds himself surplus to requirement. He's only taken part in six games so far this season and was held off the scoresheet but has a minus-3 rating.

In 315 career games, he has put up 16 goals and 56 assists for 72 points. He's not been as productive as he was in the NCAA, but he could still bring a bit of stability to the Canadiens' blueline. The current waiver priority right now is as follows: Nashville, San Jose Sabres and in third place the Canadiens.

Will the Sharks claim the rearguard? Or will the Canadiens have the opportunity to do so? We'll know tomorrow...
