CorSport: Physicality, versatility and affordability – Monaco star Milan’s midfield priority

AC Milan are looking to ‘beef up’ their midfield this summer and they are targeting a more physical profile to do so, according to a report.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews), Paulo Fonseca has requested a midfielder with defensive characteristics who can be a screen in front of the defence, something that was lacking last season and led to the team being caught in transition a lot.

The paper adds that Milan are convinced by Youssof Fofana, the 25-year-old midfielder who plays for Monaco and the French national team. His contract expires in 2025 and he has already announced that he wants to leave, with two elements that can play in the Rossoneri’s favour.

A valuation of €20-25m has been set because of his contract situation despite potentially being worth more, and after European Championship there could be an acceleration from Geoffrey Moncada and his team.

Tactically Fofana can adapt to both a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-3-3, but the important thing however is that he never runs out of steam which the reason why Milan would go for a player of this type, capable of sitting deeper or playing next to Tijjani Reijnders who is a more creative presence.

However, the Frenchman is wanted by PSG but also by several Premier League clubs and that is why alternatives are being considered like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg , who has been a pillar of Tottenham and Denmark’s midfield for several seasons and would cost about €20m.
