As Tijjani Reijnders continues to shine with the Netherlands at the European Championship, the AC Milan management are planning a move they believe will help him at club level.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan), Paulo Fonseca and the Milan directors have taken note of how well Reijnders plays under Ronald Koeman’s system, one where he is from defensive duties because he is next to a more defensive-minded player in Jerdy Schouten.

The former AZ Alkmaar man plays a little more freely with the Oranje; he moves where he prefers in search of the ball, he finds the best spaces both centrally and wider, he has the possibility of raising his head to feed his team-mates and creating dangerous chances.

This is what Fonseca wants to see him do for Milan both in the 4-3-3 and the 4-2-3-1 and in this summer transfer window the plan is to sign a midfielder with characteristics more suited to a deeper-lying player. The headline reads: ‘Fofana to free Reijnders’.

The main target is Youssouf Fofana of Monaco, who they want €25m for but – given that his contract is expiring on 30 June 2025 – the Rossoneri would like to close at €20m, bonuses included. Once his European Championship campaign with France is over, the negotiations for Fofana will accelerate.
