CorSera: Milan finally reaping derby reward as season turnaround is evident
It was another successful evening for AC Milan yesterday as they prevailed 3-0 over Lecce, moving to the top of the standings (temporarily). As highlighted by a report, the derby was the complete turnaround that Paulo Fonseca needed.
The fans were on cloud nine after the win against Inter but, at the same time, there was some concern about keeping the momentum going. Would they be able to replicate the grinta-esque performance against Lecce? Not fully, but they still scored three goals and clinched the three points.
As highlighted by Corriere della Sera this morning (via MilanNews), Milan are now first in the standings for the first time in 343 days (20 October, 2023). Even though first place is temporary and shared with Torino, yesterday’s win was special.
Just a week ago, Fonseca was on the verge of getting sacked after some really poor performances but instead, he turned everything around thanks to the success in the derby.
It’s now clear what the Rossoneri have been missing out on in the last few years, as the attitude boost you get from winning the derby cannot be underestimated. And for once it’s not Inter reaping the rewards, with Fonseca getting the players to work with his ideas.
As the newspaper concludes, though, a reaction will also be needed in the Champions League following the defeat to Liverpool. Bayer Leverkusen are up on Tuesday and since it’s away from home, it will be a difficult one for the Rossoneri.
