CorSera: ‘Derby-style performance’ – Milan’s resolve to be tested by free-scoring Leverkusen
AC Milan are back in Champions League action tonight, and they face a very difficult examination against free-scoring Bayer Leverkusen away from home.
Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) write that Milan will face the German champions Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena at 21:00 CEST tonight in a match that will put them to the test and in particular will measure the strength of Paulo Fonseca’s team after a very positive week.
The Rossoneri were able to begin an ascent up the Serie A table after a derby victory against Inter which was followed by a 3-0 home win against Lecce, but the feeling is that tonight will be a different kind of litmus test.
The paper has the headline: ‘Fonseca demands a derby-style performance. There is confidence’. Another great match is needed like the one a week and a half ago against the Nerazzurri when the team showed defensive organisation but also the attacking impetus to win the game.
Leverkusen scored 144 goals across all competitions last season and they have already had a three-game streak this season where they scored four goals in each, including their UCL opener away against Feyenoord.
CorSera adds: ‘Milan and Inter are throwing themselves into Europe in search of points in the standings. The Rossoneri are still on zero points’. A great performance for Milan will have to come – at least initially – without the support of Alvaro Morata, who is set to start from the bench due to bursitis.
