Coppa Italia: Sassuolo get Milan tie, Empoli top Torino, Cagliari progress
The first results of the Coppa Italia round of 32 saw Serie B side Sassuolo upset the odds to progress to the next round alongside Cagliari and Empoli on Tuesday.
Sassuolo emerged 2-0 winners at the Stadio Via del Mare against Lecce to book a spot in the round of 16, where they’ll take on Milan.
Cagliari needed a goal from Gianluca Lapadula to see off Cremonese, finding their first victory after five winless Serie A games to set up a tie against Juventus in the next round.
The most surprising result of the day came from the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino, where Empoli stunned Paolo Vanoli’s Serie A leaders to continue their brilliant start to the season that sees them unbeaten and fifth-placed in Serie A.
Roberto D’Aversa’s side took the lead in the first-half through Emmanuel Ekong and were pegged back by Ché Adams after the break, before Nicolas Haas scored a late winner to earn a Tuscan derby against Fiorentina in the round of 16.
More Coppa Italia action is set to take place in the following days, with the derby between Genoa and Sampdoria scheduled for Wednesday and Antonio Conte’s Napoli hosting Palermo on Thursday.
