Confirmed: Marco John heads back to Fürth on a free
As had been rumored, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim fullback/winger Marco John is headed back to SpVgg Greuther Fürth. The 22-year-old returns to the Kleebätter on a free transfer after the Sinsheimers terminated his working papers. Jonh hopes to rebuild his career in a locale at which he once thrived.
John maintains 25 top flight appearances to his credit. At one point, he looked to a have a highly promising future ahead of him. Whilst last working in Fürth on loan, he impressed with consistent performances across 25 2. Bundesliga appearances during the 2022/23 campaign.
Since returning to Sinsheim, however, John has struggled with injuries. By the time he returned from an ACL tear incurred late in the summer of 2023, competition within the TSG squad was simply too fierce. He qualified as "dead-weight" on the Hoffenheim roster entering the current window.
"Marco fought his way back impressively," Hoffenheim'sporting director Andreas Schicker noted in a club-released statement accompanying the transaction. "We nevertheless came to the conclusion that Marco needs more game time, which we cannot currently guarantee him. We have now made it possible for him to move to Greuther Fürth and are convinced that we have found an optimal solution for everyone.”
“I've never lost touch with some of the players,” the player himself added, “What I've heard from some of the guys [at SpVgg Greuther Fürth] reinforced my decision to come back. The first half of the season didn't go as well as hoped, but I'm sure that together we can overcome the situation and hopefully come out of it stronger in the end."
