Washington Commanders kicker Zane Gonzalez is shedding light on his obsessive-compulsive disorder, after getting questions from fans following his game-winning field goal.

Just as he was about to kick the deciding field goal during the Commanders playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Jan. 12, fans noticed that Gonzalez, 29, was pulling his hair, tapping his helmet and moving around his socks.

After seeing the reactions online — some of them negative — Gonzalez talked again about his OCD, something he's shared before after living with it for as long as he can remember.

"On the football field, sometimes it acts up a little bit more, and then in my personal life, it’s there — like, I have to touch the bottom of every cup — but I just kind of try to do whatever I can to hide it," he told The Washington Post. "It’s just something I’ve learned to live with all the time.”

The motions Gonzalez does just before kicking started when he was a teenager, he told the outlet. “There’s a few things I try to do to keep it as under-the-radar as I can, just understanding, get it done and whatever gets me mentally ready to go on the field, do that.”

“The helmet thing is literally the last thing I do,” he explained.

Gonzalez's habits also, unfortunately, draw rude comments on social media.

“If anything, it makes my wife and family more upset than it does with me,” he said. “I’m used to it. … Everybody that’s known or seen me kick has seen me do it millions of times.”

“Being on such a big stage on Sunday night, a game-winner, it draws a little bit more attention, I’ve learned. It’s who I am, and it’s what I go through, and I, above everybody else, realize how crazy it looks doing it. I’m aware. But at the same time, you can’t help it,” Gonzalez added.

And on Sunday, Gonzalez was the hero for Washington fans, as he kicked the team to their first playoff win since 2006.

“I’ve banked a field goal before, but that was the biggest bank shot, I’d say, of my career,” he said. “I really wish it would’ve just went in so I didn’t hear the ‘doink’ stuff. … That one was just a little outside, but I felt pretty confident about it.”

The Commanders will next face off against the Detroit Lions on Saturday, Jan. 18, in the hopes of reaching the NFC Championship.
