Avalanche's Cale Makar reveals his biggest recent impulse buy and it's hilarious

It’s pretty difficult to not love Cale Makar.

After winning the Hobey Baker Award last spring as the top college player in men’s hockey, the fourth overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft joined the Colorado Avalanche for their playoff run and made an immediate impact.

The 20-year-old defenceman provided plenty of offensive jump from the back end to help the Avalanche upset the Calgary Flames in the opening round before Colorado fell to the San Jose Sharks in seven games.

Before he scored a goal and collected five assists in 10 postseason games, Makar signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Avalanche worth $925,000 a season and full of performance bonuses.

With that boost financially, you’d expect a large purchase or two within the last few months. Not if you’re Mr. Makar.

"Umm.. the other day I was driving and I stopped to buy myself a slurpee,” Makar said to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, when asked about his biggest impulse purchase of the last 12 months. “I wouldn't usually do that, but I did."

Yes, Cale! Good for you! You did because you deserved it and you are more than able to.

If you told me that a frozen treat would be an NHL rookie’s definition of a large purchase in the moment, I would have called you a liar. Nonetheless, here we are.

Who needs fancy cars and a new condo when you can buy frozen water and high fructose corn syrup with your own money, right?

Makar has been quite busy as of late. On top of preparations for the first full NHL season of his career, he was the darling of the one of the league’s media days on Thursday.

After averaging nearly 18 minutes of ice time during the playoffs, Makar is expected to comfortably fill a spot in Colorado’s top two pairings.

Based on what we know about the baby-faced blueliner from Calgary, it’s tough to not root for his success.
