Provincial police say a woman in her 30s was rushed to hospital in critical condition after a Via Rail passenger train struck her van in Coteau-du-Lac, in Quebec's Montérégie area.

The incident happened around 7:45 a.m., almost an hour after the Montreal-to-Toronto train was scheduled to leave.

Radio-Canada confirmed the woman is a worker at a nearby winery and was on a private road, which has no barrier with lights at the crossing.

No one aboard the train was injured, but some trips heading to Toronto from Montreal are seeing significant delays.
