The 60 Second Driver. It's no surprise that traction is reduced when it's raining and streets are wet. But it may surprise you to learn when your risk of a collision is the highest. At the beginning of a rainfall or during a light rain is when you lose the most traction. Oil and dust from the pavement become loose and float in the water. This creates an oily film between the road and your vehicle tires which can cause slipping. As rain continuous to fall the oil is washed away but the lighter the rain the longer it takes. During these conditions you should slow down and increase the distance between you and the vehicle ahead. You should also break more gently. If you dont have ABS and the tires start to skid ease up and re-apply the breaks. In heavy rain, deep water can drown your brakes. So slow down before going through large puddles or change lanes if possible. Brought to you by Manitoba Public Insurance and CTV.
