The canadian dental care plan will eventually be accessible for up to 9 million low-income uninsured canadians of all ages. But the program is moving in in phases. So far, 2 million seniors, 65 and older have been approved to receive coverage. Joining us now from the manitoba dental association is doctor darren backs are good morning doctor and your thanks for joining us. Now, let's talk about the federal dental care plan so far. How's it going in manitoba at this point? >> You know, manitoba, dentists and dentists across the country have long advocated for targeted investments in oral health care and the canadian dental care plan represents an important opportunity to help make oral health care more affordable for patients. The manitoba dental association, the canadian dental association and our provincial and territorial counterparts have been working with the federal government advocating on behalf of patients and providers to make fundamental decisions on the design of what this plan could be, so that it is sustainable in the long term. What challenges are you seeing at this point? One challenge is that we're seeing that patients are restricted in their choice of provider. Patients who are seeking oral health care providers need to choose from a list of in network providers. That's a system that we don't see in existing private and public plans and patients who have existing insurance or even those who are uninsured can choose their healthcare provider based on their values and their needs. That's often finances, but it's often location language and the relationship that gets built between a patient and their provider. But a lot of these patients don't have a providers, so they don't really have any loyalty is per se. So what, how is that going to change? Now what we're again strongly advocating for with the federal government is that this plan is built with some universality, so that patients can see the provider of their choice based on all of their needs. Whether providing that they have now who they built a trust relationship with or that someone that they're seeking out and seeking the best quality care that they can, they can receive. And what that will look like is a system that doesn't require patients to select from list of providers, but but creates more of open pathway for participants. Both patients and providers to to run this plan. So how's it going so far? What sort of problems have you seen in-patients at this point? You know, there's patients that are patients of providers in manitoba and they are looking to utilize their benefit and they're hearing from their providers that their providers feel strongly that there needs to be a canadian dental care plan that sustainable today in may of 2024 as well as may of 2025 and for years to come. So one of those challenges again, is patient choice. Another told we're seeing is the communication about what the actual coverage is. There's a lot of misunderstanding that this is free dental care and it's not. This is a subsidy that the government has created to help make oral health care more affordable and a subsidy is something that's wonderful to celebrate what we to see. Clearly communicated from the government and from providers to patients is that their out of pocket expenses that all cohorts of the canadian dental care plan eligible patients will face. So for patients who may qualify, what should they do? Right now what we're
