As caryn lieberman reports, spring allergies have been starting earlier in recent years, and that trend is expected to continue. >> This year is the worst. The other years were okay with the reactant and that, but this year nothing doesn't seem to want to work. Cheryl daycare has tried every allergy medication, but nothing seems to be helping. Sinus and my throat. That's why I sound all stuffy. >> The typical seasonal allergy symptoms sneezing, coughing and feeling more miserable than usual are being felt by many. All I wish is they'd go away. >> I can't find anything that sorts them out. Really well. But yeah, everyone's got my sympathies right now about a quarter of canadians suffer from seasonal allergies and if it feels like yours are worse this year, you're not the only one. >> As our warm months start earlier and fall tends to be warm for a bit longer, that the overall season where different pollens are going up in the air is extending for longer and so more people are feeling it. There's a lot of pollen in the air. >> I can get like completely congested where I can't even breathe. >> At victoria commons pharmacy allergy medication is flying off the shelves. >> I actually have to order a completely new stock. >> Pharmacist marcos massey says patients have been coming regularly asking for advice, allergy medication, changing filters in the car or in the house, and sinus rinses, which is essentially a mixture of salt and water to help clean out the sinuses. >> This is a type of condition that can change over time, so your symptoms may have been not so bad long ago and getting worse because our counts are higher. >> Okay, a few simple strategies to keep seasonal allergies under control. The first one is obvious. Stay indoors if you can on dry and windy days. Avoid your gardening chores because they tend to stir up the allergens. And finally, if you've been outside all day, when you get home, remove your clothing and take a shower to rinse your hair and your body of that pollen. I'm going to head indoors right now because I too have been struggling with my seasonal allergies. Throw it back to you in studio. >> The ontario federation of labor is launching a campaign with ontario's ndp to regulate heat stress in the province. >> Ontario summers are getting hotter and hotter, leading to

unsafe working conditions for many workers in our province. We need better protections for workers from heat stress. As ontario faces more climate change driven extreme heat events. The time for action is now. The government should immediately bring in revisions to health and safety legislation using examples of protective legislation already adopted in other jurisdictions. >> The ofl is calling for legislation to protect workers from extreme heat on the job. The new legislation will apply to people who work both indoor and outdoor jobs. The campaign will support change that is set to be introduced in the fall. We have an update on a homicide investigation in belleville. Police were called early yesterday morning to a home on hastings park drive. They found a deceased woman and a man with lacerations on his wrists early in the investigation, it was thought 30 year old tyler donnelly of belleville would be charged with first degree murder, but that has been downgraded to second degree murder. Donnelly remains in custody. The victim has been identified as 26 year old shannon lee hickey of belleville. Police say the accused and victim had been in a previous intimate relationship, but continued to live together. Provincial police e vestigatg after a jeep was found in the saint lawrence river on the weekend. The vehicle was found near the end of dundas street, beyond park street in cardinal. It was spotted by a nearby resident sunday morning. Police say no one was found inside the jeep, but the owner and occupants were located and were not injured. Police are still trying to determine how it ended up in the water. Kingston city council is throwing its support and money behind the construction of a new community center for the inner city. The center would be owned and operated by the saint vincent de paul society. Councillors will invest nearly $1 million in municipal funding to help build the center at 595 bagot street, the site of the former no frills store. The organization plans to break ground by the end of the month, with construction expected to be complete by the end of the year. Alongside the funding, the city is also providing a five year interest free loan and waiving about $400,000 in building permit and development fees. >> We have worked so hard and we needed the help of this city council to get this project to the finish line and the fact that they unanimously voted in support of it for practical reasons is wonderful. But for an agency to have that kind of confidence from their city council means the world to me. I'm very proud of that. >> Red lobster has filed for bankruptcy protection. The us based restaurant chain filed in a florida court after securing $11 million in financing commitments from its existing lenders. Red lobster says its restaurants will remain open and operate as usual during the bankruptcy proceedings. However, it plans to reduce its locations and pursue a sale of its assets. Red lobster has about 700 locations around the world, including over 25 locations in canada and one in kingston. It's unclear how the us bankruptcy filing may impact the canadian restaurants. Still to come, more nations call for recognition of a palestinian state and we'll hear from passengers on a plane ride that hit deadly turbulence. >> And a severe thunderstorm watch for tonight.
