Stream on StackTVand the Global TV app. [ ] This is a good day. Yeah, it's beautiful, too. We don't often hear, like, as many war stories from female veterans. Rena... I just wonder if she knew the impact of her service. [ ] This morning, we are at Government House here in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island... Welcome. [Jillian] ...The official home of the Lieutenant Governor. -A pleasure to have you here. -Yes! Thank you. This feels like a huge honour, just to have a moment of her time. Sometimes, when we readaccounts of the wars, we don't see the recognitionof the service... but especially for the Nursing Sisters. It was big. Mm. As part of her service, Rena was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal. It's a 1914 star, for those that started serving right at the beginningof the war, and she would be one of the few women to have received that. Wow! So she received a number of awards? She did. And then the other one that we have an example here to show you is the Royal Red Cross Class 2. The small Silver Cross is one recognition for nursing service. Throughout both the First and Second World War, there were only just over 400 of those medals awarded, so that in itself is-- is significant. Wow. Rena was awarded the Royal Red Cross Class 2 in 1916. She would have actually been presented this? Yes. Oh, I didn't know that! I-I did not know that. So she was... [sniffling] like, aware, like-- -Mm-hmm, yes. -She was recognized in person? I have heard about her medals, but I always assumed they were after her death. I hadn't realized that she knew that she was doing such a good job. [ ] [Perry] So this was the Rena McLean Memorial Hospital, which was dedicated to her in 1918, Wow. It would've been a pretty big deal, to have a whole hospital named after... Absolutely! Absolutely. It was a veterans' hospital... ...and now it's the Rena McLean Veterans' Garden. It is a memorial garden where people can contemplate those who gave their lives, for our freedom, in the wars. [Jillian] "Rena McLean Veterans Garden. In memory of a young Island nurse who served as a member of the Canadian Nursing Sisters. Rena McLean was the only Prince Edward Island nurse to lose her life during the Great War, when the hospital ship theLlandovery Castle was sunk in 1918." [ ] At the start of this, I knew of the sinking... but just hadn't really thought of Rena as the person. Learning more about her... now I have 20 extra layers to this family legend. She was able to helpand safely bring home soldiers. There's generations of peoplethat she impacted. Knowing Rena's experience... I... feel more like a real nurse, because now I havethis legacy story I can keep alive through serving the veteransthat I work with. So, I really think that'sthe value in Rena's story. [ ]

>> From "global-kingston. This is ckws-news at 11. >> Leveled by a landslide. Hundreds are believed to be buried in a remote region of papua new guinea. We have the details on the frantic search for survivors. We'll have more on that story shortly. Good evening, and thank you for joining us. I'm shallima-maharaj today. A legend was laid to rest in gananoque. Charles donovan was a beloved member of the gananoque community. He owned donovan's hardware and played a part in every major event that happened in the community. He was known by people far and wide. The 99 year old passed away at the beginning of may, and this weekend his life was celebrated at grace united church, kaytlyn-poberznick was there and has the details of the celebration. >> Well, this is actually a celebration for the community, not just for charlie charles frederick donovan, also known as charlie or as the community referred to him as mr. Gananoque , passed away at the age of 99 on may 2nd. >> We have many fond memories of him and so does the community. >> Charlie's grandfather was the original owner of donovan's hardware on the main street in gananoque, then passed down to charlie himself. The business was and continues to be a community hub. Donovan contributed a great deal to gananoque culture and sense of community, including developing the landon bay vacation center. >> Charlie was such a community person. He was involved in so many projects, from the arts to music, entertainment, the festival of the islands and of course, his biggest project, landon bay, which is canada's newest national park. >> Every seat in grace united church was filled for the celebration. Even perhaps charlie's rocking chair. >> We have his rocking chair up at the front of the church, and I got a feeling charlie will be sitting there watching the ceremony. >> Celebration is all about sharing stories. >> We have cards. Charlie would sit in his chair every day and sign cards for the customers. Charles donovan and give them a. He did that every day, and he would come down and he would sit and we'd say, charlie, you better take a break. You know, you're going to be exhausted. No he said, I might miss somebody. >> Donovan went the extra mile to show he cared. >> Charlie would spend as long as it took to buy you a 40 cent washer for your $400 pump that you thought was broken, and. And in half an hour, he'd have it fixed for you. >> The township of gananoque will hold another celebration for donovan on july 31st. What would have been his 100th birthday? Kaytlyn-poberznick "global news" gananoque. >> Well, another community event to tell you all about the great lakes museum hosted an official opening today for the ss keewaten. The public got a chance to check out the titanic era ship after receiving the steam liner formerly owned by cp rail. In the fall, the museum spent several months fixing up the 1907 built ship. Now, hundreds of volunteers helped get the keewaten back into ship shape for tours. The boat came from georgian bay, where locals used it as a tourist attraction. From 2012 up until 2020. Now kingstonians get to experience the one of a kind ship themselves. >> This is the last one in the world like this. Is that really true? Yes, it is true. There is no other passenger liner from that era. There used to be thousands. They're all like the titanic. They're either on the bottom of the ocean or a lake somewhere, or they were scrapped. There's only one left. >> Tickets for tours are now available for purchase. They get you into the keewaten as well as the great lakes museum. A new accessible boardwalk honoring the legacy of former ontario lieutenant governor david onley, was unveiled at the toronto zoo. Of accessibility, onley was the first lieutenant governor of ontario with a physical disability. The boardwalk commemorates his life and his many contributions to the community. >> We hope this very small gesture of naming this beautiful trail will serve, serve as a constant reminder of his many important contributions and the impact he had on so many people. An impact that will continue here for years to come. >> The tribute also aims to ensure that accessibility remains a priority for zoo staff, volunteers and visitors. Time now for our first check on the forecast with more on what you can expect. Let's bring on

our weather specialist noor-ra'fat. >> Hey, thanks very much shallima. A bulk of our saturday being taken up by some heavy rain earlier today for some communities though, that rain was paired with some thunderstorms. They weren't severe, but they were there all right. Southwestern ontario towards the niagara falls area and pushing into new york state, where things have been weakening the past few hours. Some of us saw some heavier rain, especially towards bracebridge and bancroft earlier today, also towards the cobourg region. A lot of that rain sliding or tracking to the east and weakening as it headed towards communities like kingston and cornwall. We can see that some of us have been spending some the past few hours under some mostly dry conditions, although we are seeing some lingering showers in the kawartha lakes area still though, some lingering clouds. But we're getting better in that department, hour by hour. Here we are looking at another day of temperatures that are feeling closer to what the thermostat is measuring 22 with the humidity in peterborough, 17 in bancroft, kingston at 20 degrees. Although it did feel a bit moist out there. Thankfully, it didn't feel muggy. If you see london, ontario, 28 with the humidex, we don't want to be in that position and we won't be for the next few days. Here we are as we approach the overnight, we're really looking at mostly dry conditions. Those clouds slowly start to break up but then move back in for tomorrow. We'll start the day off mostly cloudy for the kawartha lakes and cottage country area. It will be sunny in kingston and then things will get better as the day progresses. So do expect a gorgeous sunday for communities like peterborough. Very warm this evening and then by tomorrow, 25 degrees for your high with a mix of sun and cloud. I know a lot of us both in peterborough and in kingston, are looking forward to some mis walks this weekend in port. Hope things are looking good and in kingston things are also looking good for those walks. 21 degrees by the afternoon. Thanks so much, norah. >> Prime minister justin trudeau spent saturday morning near halifax speaking with ethnic community leaders about the government's new pharmacare plan . The prime minister highlighted his government's support of contraception for women and much needed insulin medication for canadians living with diabetes. Under the liberals plan, medications and devices including insulin birth control pills and iuds will be free for canadians. Nova scotia nurses union president janet hazelton says contraception and diabetes coverage are among the most needed for those without a drug plan in the region. Deputy prime minister and finance minister chrystia freeland is heading home from italy, where she and other g7 finance ministers have just wrapped up three days of talks. As david-akin reports, canada has been pushing the g7 to adopt a plan to use seized russian financial assets to help finance the government of ukraine. >> Finance ministers of the g7, canada's chrystia freeland, included, spent three days in italy's alpine resort town of stresa grappling with two key problems china and russia. There was broad consensus among the world's richest nations canada, the us, the uk, germany, italy, france and japan that they must do more to curb china's anti-competitive behavior. But getting agreement on dealing with vladimir putin's russia is a trickier problem. Canada has been pushing a plan to use the interest income generated by the $300 billion in russian financial assets that were seized by western nations after russia invaded ukraine in 2022, and either give that money directly to ukraine or use that as collateral against a loan for ukraine. Either way, such a move could give ukraine as much as $50 billion, which it urgently needs. Canada's firm position has always been that russia, the aggressor, must pay for the destruction it has caused, deputy prime minister chrystia freeland told reporters. It cannot be the sole duty of the democracies, or of the brave people of ukraine, to pay for putin's war of aggression. Us treasury secretary janet yellen supports the idea, but other g7 finance ministers say there are some tricky technical and legal hurdles that need to be cleared first. And on top of that, each of the european union's 27 countries would have to sign off on any plan that would see russia's financial assets being used to help ukraine. G7 leaders, including prime minister justin trudeau, will be back in italy early next month, where they are expected to finalize any plans to provide financial help to ukraine. As for russia, its finance minister had a warning for the west if russian financial assets are
