This could be the site of calgary -- vancouver's first ever pot hotel. >> We have a dire hotel shortage in the city of vancouver. We need 10,000 more hotel rooms in the coming years. We're looking at demand and supply. >> Reporter: with the fifa world cup coming to vancouver and concerts like taylor swift this december, visitors from out of town will need a place to stay that will not break the bank. Vancouver city counsellor sarah kirby young says with more people working from home since the pandemic, the city has seen an increase in office space vacancies. >> This is one way to look at adaptive reuse of surplus existing office space that we have as well as it delivers some new hotel rooms more quickly than you would building a traditional full hotel. I think a smart solution to deal with the empty office space on the hotel solution at the same time. >> Reporter: a pot hotel is essentially a tiny room with a bed and shared amenities which are already operating out of richmond and rensselaer. Kirby aga says pot hotels are a fraction of a price of a traditional hotel. Ideal for people who want a hotel room just to sleep. >> We see the impact on illegal air b&bs. People do not have any way to say they are desperately trying to find somewhere to stay. We want to keep housing in the hands of locals and have enough hotel rooms for visitors. >> Reporter: kirby says she and councilor lisa will be bringing forward the motion to a city hall meeting next week.
