Good evening. We will have more than story in just a few minutes but we begin tonight with the weather. Emergency broadcast alarms rang out right across phones in our region when the season first tornado warning was issued. Let's first take take a look from this afternoon that's along the shores of wasaga beach as the clouds moved in bringing high winds and a massive dip in the

temperature. The same system continued to move northeast which brought tornado warnings to orillia, bracebridge and gravenhurst. And now here in barrie a second system brought heavy rain and hail. That's what it looked look here the ctv barrie studio in the south end. That was late this afternoon. Hail was also seen in innisfil this afternoon. This was a look near friday harbour. That's pea-sized hail coming down. We have received all sorts of photos and videos. Threes taken from viewers in midhurst severn township and as the storm knocked over trees and more hail came down there now. >>> All right. Let's go right to catalina gillies for our first look at weather. We actually had to bring you inside at this time because of the unpredictable weather. So let's start with warnings. Do we have any of that viewers should be aware of? >> Catalina: yeah, sarah it's been a wild day for weather. There are still warnings and watches from environment canada. Let's look at that board right now. All the areas covered in yellow are under a watch by environment canada. Red is the warning. So we could see wind gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour, toonie-sized hail and heavy downpours. Make sure you are careful if you are outside or driving. >>> Let's take a first look at weather brought to you by thegraveldrivewayguy.com your local gravel driveway expert. The temperature in barrie 22. Windsper hour. Current temperatures around the region up in muskoka-parry sound 24 right now. 22 in gravenhurst and barrie. 25 in alliston. Wa in toronto. Looking now to the past couple of hours our radar and satellite images that system made its way through. That brought along heavy rainfall, hail and heavy winds. So it has been a wild day for weather. We will have your full weather forecast with more later on in the show. Back to you. >> Sarah: thanks, catalina. Let's get back to our top story now t the troubling trend of kids vaping in our schools. The province announcing six schoolboards here in ontario will be a part of a pilot program to help end that habit and that includes two right here in simcoe county. Ctv's christian d'avino brings us the details around how this hopes to make real change. >> Reporter: vaping among youth has increased rapidly across the nation. Hitting schoolboards here at home. >> I was in elementary school principal for 20 years. I had experienced vaping as young as grade five. >> Reporter: with students facing addiction the simcoe county muskoka district schoolboard and the simcoe county district schoolboard will be joining four other boards programming. Known as quash it will give students access to an app. >> And the app basically guides them through want to go quit. >> Reporter: how to roll out quash last week a component itself of the province's mandate to banning vaping in schools announced last month alongside restrictions on when students can utilize their cell phones on how students can be expected to access the app. >> There is a ban in the classroom that only during instructional time. So then the rest of the time in your school or students at home or wherever they are they are still able to access to the app. >> Canada now has some of the highest use vaping rates in the world. >> Reporter: based on the most recent canadian tobacco and nicotine survey of canadian teens who vaped in the last month, 69% have never smoked. Foundational developed quash three years ago to tackle this worsening health crisis. Its ceo says it works in two ways: one by the aforementioned app itself and by parents and school administrators through educational supports. >> It's a series of webinars and they can also become an adult facilitator and take a program on our web site that allows them to facilitate the quash program. >> Reporter: the simcoe county district schoolboard declined to comment. Meanwhile, the simcoe muskoka catholic district schoolboard will roll out the app in june which will be extend napped the fall. Christian d'avino ctv news barrie. >> Sarah: a heavy police presence closed down county road 21 outside of thornton earlier today. Emergency crews were called to the area for reports of a possible body but after an investigation took place police stay it turned out to be a paroled up carpet and there was no body found. That investigation is now closed and the road re-opened.

>>> A 20-year old bradford man faces charges of sexual assault involving teen-aged girls and police believe there could be more victims. York regional police charged janarthan sivaranjan with sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching. Police alleged he met a 16-year old girl through social media in march of 2023 and of that when the two met in person he sexually assaulted her. Police also allege their investigation into janarthan sivaranjan revealed that he met a 13-year old girl at a party in october of 2023 and pretended to be 16-years old. They claim he met her a second time and also assaulted her. Anyone with information is asked to contact police. >>> We have certainly talked a lot about the rain. Now let's move to the roads. Construction continues across much of barrie leaving many people wondering when will it end. Here is ctv's rob cooper with some potential end days. >> Reporter: it's known often that major road work projects get done ahead of schedule but that's exactly the case for the dunlop street interchange truck sanitary relocation project by cedar pointe in dunlop. >> We are working 24-hour shifts so we allowed the contractor to do the 24-hour shifts so we can get the done work done as quickly as possible so the businesses aren't impacted as much as they have been. >> Reporter: all that's really left for the 11 million-dollar project is a repaving of the road set for later this month and the gradings of the boulevards and sod replacement work which continues today. Business in the area admit the last several months of construction and traffic delays have been difficult for their bottom line. >> I am very pleased we are coming to an end. It's been a long haul it. Feels like even my customers have said how much more can you take. >> Reporter: it will be another busy construction season across the city. Prongs under way if what some people say seems to be every corner of the city. The duckworth project is still taking place in the east end. >> The duckworth is on track. We are on schedule. They are still working. And I think they will be done in 2025. >> Reporter: the overpass project at essa and the 400 main not ab city project but it is certainly brought things to a near standstill along essa road in the south end. Many drivers try and avoid the area at all costs but some admit they can't. >> Just to get under on essa road takes 20 minutes through three sets of lights. Now it's a lot worse. >> Reporter: while drivers will get a break from the road work and congestion by dunlop and cedar pointe it will be short-lived as the province prepares to do its bridge replacement project. I am told it's expected to start next year and will take four years to complete. Rob cooper, ctv news barrie. >> Sarah: staying with development the county much simcoe is holding an open house tonight to address affordable housing along rose street here in barrie. Let's go now to ctv's alessandra carneiro who joins us live from city hall. That's where things will be taking place tonight. What is the community invited to do? >> Reporter: it's called an open house and that's exactly what will be happening tonight as the county really lifts the curtain on a 200 million-dollar development giving residents really a first look at this project. Now the event first kicked off at about 5 o'clock this evening and it is being organized by the county and it's really giving people a chance to view the plan but also ask questions. Some of those questions will range if what will the impact be on current residents who live in that neighbourhood of rose street to other questions regarding how can a family sign up to hopefully access a unit once construction is done. We are also learning more details about the project so it will be more than 200 units ranging from one, two- and three-bedroom and it will also include two buildings, one will be about seven-storeys high while the other will be nine-storeys high. >> It's very important one we want to make sure residents understand what we are proposing in the neighbourhood. We like to hear feedback and some of the features. We want to also make sure they know what services will be located in the building that they can access because what we try too do is make sure we are designing and building whole communities and ensuring that we have a wide variety of services that the community can use and not just the residents. >> Reporter: so we know that shovels are expected to go into the ground in the fall and the county is hoping that construction on this project will be completed by 2027 with families and many people from our community moving into that project. I am alessandra carneiro. Back to you. >> Sarah: now a story of a 53-year old barrie man who set out late last month to accomplish an incredible feat. Jody pad feed is tacking the bruce trail 900 kilometres in 30 days. Miked caught up with padfield on how he is doing and who he is doing it for. -- padfield. >> These are the tougher mornings. You read the forecast. Now stay in bed. This is not going to be a fun
