Here is ctv's pat foran with more. >> Reporter: in a country with long winters, the summer vacation is a staple for many canadian families and this year a survey by deloitte found that 74% plan to stay in canada close to their home region. 65% are planning a summer road trip. >> Canadians are intend to go spend a bit more this year -- intending. They are still price sensitive but they do intend to get out there and spend money. >> Reporter: a familiar theme is the great outdoors with many hoping to take in nature and local attractions. Canadians will spend just over $2,400 but that's just for lodging and transportation. 35% won't be travelling at all because they can't afford it. >> Definitely there is a percentage of canadians that are not planning on travelling in a major way this year. >> Reporter: another survey by kayak, a travel search engine, found two of the top domestic destinations this summer will be calgary and edmonton. The web site also says for canadians who want to stretch their dollar outside of the country searches for south and central america have increased by more than 30%. >> In the summer we are seeing south and central america travel prices down by 12 and 13% each so it's definitely a place where you can go to get your value your your dollar. >> Reporter: kayak says while europe is still a favourite for canadians prices have increased over last year. Some tourists are bypassing the favourite cities london and paris to visit more affordable destinations. >> Currently we are seeing rome, lisbon and athens as well as amsterdam as most popular destinations. >> Reporter: according to the web site anyone planning a vacation should lock in their trip soon. Prices are considered low right now but will continue to rise until the he found june. You will usually pay a premium for trips booked in july and august. Airline ceo says the ultralow price offering will team travelers seeking the most affordable fare while also freeing up overhead bin space for other passengers. He says the new category will be available in a couple of weeks and travelers who purchase it will still be able to store backpack or a purse under seat in front of them.

Doctors at the children's hospital much eastern ontario are using artificial intelligence to help diagnose rare disorders. The A.I. scans record and flag patients for genetic testing. Ctv's judy trinh takes a closer look at the technology. >> Reporter: for years the family have been searching for the cause of the developmental delays in their 10-year old son anthony. >> His balance is very poor as well as being able to retain information and grasp everyday small task and knowledge was very challenging. >> Reporter: doctors initially thought the delays were due to complications from surgery anthony as a baby. He was born with excessive fluid around his brain. After more than 100 visits to a hospital and being bounced from one specialist to another anthony was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder chum jansen sin jeam there is only about 400 people in the world known with this disease right now as we speak. Anthony's actually the first one diagnosed with this disease in north america. >> Reporter: there are 6,000 rare genetic diseases. Anthony's diagnosis may not have happened if he wasn't flagged for testing through an A.I. algorithm. Cheo named it think rare. It was developed by scientists working with tech experts. >> It's kind of a nudge. It's not -- we are not replacing the doctors. We are kind of helping them with some of these digital tools. >> Reporter: so this pilot project researchers used the algorithm to analyse 10 years of data consisting of more than 250,000 patient records. Of that number, 15 breem flagged as having potential rare genetic diseases. A.I. is allowing chi doctors to diagnose rare disorders in kids much earlier so families can get help faster. >> You don't have a specific diagnostic code attached to you in the health -- in the educational system you are often not given enough resources. >> Reporter: it took cheo three years to develop its A.I. algorithm but it doesn't have plans to monetize it.
