It happened early this afternoon in south end of barrie. >>> Good evening and thanks for joining us. The barrie traffic and forensic investigation units were on scene trying to piece together what happened a of a young child suffered life threatening injuries from a recycling truck. Police say this is where it happened. Red maple lane near maple view thrive east and yonge street. A heavy construction area, investigators believe a recycling truck hit a young climbed just after 12:30 P.M. and was then rushed to hospital in serious life threatening conditions. Police say it's still too early to though exactly what happened. >> In spite of the fact that not only has a young child been seriously injured here, but this has the potential to impact not own enthat child's family but people that live in the area, work in the area and first responders who have attended to the scene today. The message is simple. This is a growing city, a busy city. We share the roads with cyclists, cars and at times pedestrians. We need to slow down, especially in residential areas. We need to always keep a watchful eye. And most importantly, we need to be aware of what is happening around us at all times. >> Catalina: according to barrie police the child was air lifted to a toronto area trauma centre and there is no further update on the child's condition at this time. >>> The sentencing hearing for a barrie man and woman convicted of sex crimes involving a child was heard in court today. While desiree torrance heard from her victims, noticeably absent was 50-year-old eric johnson. Ctv's mike arsalides reports on the hearing. And a warning: details in the story may be disturbing and triggering. >> Mike: for more tan an hour the court waited for eric johnson to walk that barrie court house for a sentencing hearing. Johnson was a no show. His co-accused, desiree torrance, sat in court crying. Both johnson and torrance were convicted back in december of sex crimes and assault of a child. The curl was found guilty of ten counts by justice annette cusolo including sexual assault, sexual interference, exploitation and sexual assault with a weapon. Today the court heard from the victim whose identity is protected by a publication ban. The victim impact statement read out said: I can't remember how many times I cried myself to sleep. How many times I washed blood off my face. The first time Mr. Johnson assaulted me, it felt like a nightmare. Describing a deep trauma and fear from attacks, the court heard happened between 2014 and 2018. Adding: no one understands how many times a day you think, "if I end everything right now, there will be no more pain, no more suffering." that thought rings in your head every second of every day. Speaking to the physical scars and psychological struggles, telling the court: to Mr. Johnson my last words are I hope no one else has to experience the pain and torture you subjected me to. I am healing from the wrongs you did to me but that 12-year-old girl you stole so much from will never know what it would be like to live a life without pain. The two were charged in december of 2020. The crown is asking torrance spend two years behind bars. The defence seeking a conditional sentence of 18 months. Johnson, whom the court will issue a warrant for is expected to receive a significant penitentiary sentence. Johnson's lawyer hoping his client comes to court too many for -- tomorrow for the continuation of the sentencing hearing. Mike arsalides, ctv news barrie. >> Catalina: pressure is mounting for a cleaner and safer downtown core in barrie. Today mayor alex net nuttall shared the progress. But one social services group felt they were lift of left out of the picture, ctv's christian d'avino has the store. >> The most important message is that we're eliminating the silos that exist between the various services here in the city of barrie. >> Christian: barrie mayor alex nuttall hammering home the issues downtown. One of which is to reduce crime. During his press conference, the mayor announcing his plan to stop illegal drug dispensaries from operating in barrie. >> I don't think it's something that we can continue to let happen without resistance. >> Christian: the mayor also committing to increase the presence of police downtown. A request, in part, by the downtown B.I.A. >> We see an incident, when we see somebody in need or in challenge we can help with that process about you we need to know who to protect. Having a police presence is a conduit. >> Christian: the mayor endorsed the initiative while also showing how police and community groups work together to address addiction and homelessness. >> We're going to have more after police presence downtown. But that isn't siloed approach any more. >> We were not aware of this press conference. So it seems a little

disingenuous to speak on behalf of social service agencies but not invite them. >> Christian: the gilbert centre provides social supports to those in need. Harm reduction manager sarah tilly disappointed the mayor didn't discuss barrie's application for a consumption and treatment services site. The harm reduction project has been in limbo while waiting for funding from the provincial government. Tilly points to other communities where they're doing more in the interim. In sudbury, the city stepped in to fund a site by itself, a while waiting for funding that never came. Closing its doors last march. >> There is is an ability. And there are other forms of financial support for things like supervised consumption sites that we know save lives if people are willing. And right now, barrie city council, the mayor and other folks at the table don't seem to be committed to actually saving lives. >> Christian: christian d'avino, ctv news barrie. >> Catalina: police have arrested a man in connection with a shooting in downtown barrie late last year. Just before 5 P.M. on november 24th, officers were called to dunlop street east near simcoe street for reports of a shooting. A 60-year-old woman suffered a serious gun shot wound and was air lifted to a trauma centre with a life threatening injury. Detectives later issued an arrest warrant for a 28-year-old man from mississauga. Earlier this week police say the man surrendered himself where he was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder and several weapons and drug related offences. >>> Switching gears now. An exciting day here in our region with the province announcing not one, but three multimillion dollar projects meant to strengthen the school system in simcoe county. Ctv's rob cooper was on hand for both announcements. And brings us the details. >> Rob: simcoe-grey mpp brian sunderson made the first of three major education announcements at St. Thomas aconfine at secondary school in tottenham. >> Committed $8.6 million to expand this school t will create another 217 student spots. That's a 20% increase to the current enrollment. >> Rob: that money will help deal with overcrowding. The grade 9 to 12 school has five portables and 900 students. >> We'll have an extra 12 classrooms to accommodate our growing population in the area. We need it now because we're out of space for our students. We were using a classroom earlier in the year as a classroom space. >> We're supposed to go to 80,000 people by 2021 and having school that is are safe and good for all of them are important for our community. >> Rob: the second announcement by the province revealed plans to build a new catholic elementary school in angus. >> The government is committing $26 million to a new catholic elementary school in angus. A very much needed initiative. >> Rob: this will create more than 500 new spots along with 40 licensed care spots. So it's great. >> Rob: the public board says it hopes to have shovels in the ground for the new school here in angus open and operational by september 2027. Rob cooper, ctv news angus. >> Catalina: and it's been a day of progress it seems with the official opening of a new location for the georgian bay native women women's location in penetanguishene. Reporting mike lang of. >> Mike: for the georgian bay native women's association, everything is now under one roof. >> It's just a sense of security I would say for the biggest part. We have our own building. We have our space that we can call our very own. >> Rob: as. >> Mike: as opposed to their old space this location is at 41 main street with fresh renovations to the tune of $150,000 it offers sherry charles boy and her staff exclusive space to offer services to indigenous families in the area. >> The way the building has been designed is so all these programs can be happening at the same time. >> Mike: that includes overcoming mental illnesses, addictions, crime and violence as well as support for child welfare, parenting and seniors.
