Facing discontent from shoppers over soaring grocery prices, the parent companies of loblaws and sobeys are under investigation by canada's competition bureau for alleged anti-competitive conduct. Ctv's paul holdingsworth has the details. >> Reporter: canada's grocery giants sobeys and loblaws also facing scrutiny over rising food prices are now on the receiving end of an investigation launched by the competition bureau of canada. >> Anytime you're being investigated by the competition bureau, something is happening because they don't get involved all that often. In fact I think this is a fairly novel case. >> Reporter: both grocery chains are accused of using competition to drive the high price of food. >> When you try to control geography as a retailer and you're suppressing competition, access. Access to food, affordable food becomes an issue for a lot of people. >> Reporter: sobeys owner empire called the investigation "unlawful." law professor wayne McKAY says this case will resonate with millions of canadian who is are struggling with the high cost of groceries. >> That's one of the things the competition bureau has to look at. They have to come to it independently. They're not to be overly influenced by political or public opinion. But at the end of the day they can decide: is this or is this not proper competitive activity. >> Reporter: wayne McKAY does not want to predict an outcome but he does think the competition bureau has enough to pursue this case going forward. Which means he says it is possible it could be linked to increased competition in the future. The decision came this morning at an immigration and refugee board hearing. The lawyer for jaskirat singh sidhu said it was a forgone conclusion as all that was required is to show is that he was not a canadian citizen and committed a serious crime. He served eight years in prison after pleading guilty in 2019. 16 people killed and 13 people injured from the crash in 2018.

>>> Barrie's annual water front festival is officially underway at centennial park. The weekend-long event features live music, food trucks, vendors and more. Hundreds came out this evening to enjoy the event. That's considered the launch of barrie's summer festival season. Crews started setting up the stage, beer garden and midway first thing this morning. 14 bands are set to perform this weekend. Mostly consisting of classic rock tribute bands. There are also 50-plus exhibiters selling all types of food, crafts and other goods from all around the world. >> Just here to enjoy with our friends. We have a lot of drinks here. >> Enjoyed everything. It was so amazing. >> We tried different types of food here. We tried the poutine. >> It was so fun to be here we loved it. >> Yeah. >> We're coming back tomorrow. >> We wanted to come down and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells. Everything that they have to offer down here. >> Catalina: looks delicious. Organizers say they expect tens of thousands to attend over the weekend. Admission is free. And the festival runs until 7 P.M. on sunday. >>> Barrie north collegiate was the site of a special prom day today. As pegs education students from 14 high schools across the region celebrated their graduation in style. More than 300 special education students took part in the celebration. The students, age 14 to 21 were dressed in their friday's finest and enjoyed an afternoon of dancing, music and treats. >> As you can tell, they are loving it. They get to see all their friends that they don't normally see. It's a wonderful event that kind of resonates with all the students and it carries through throughout the year. >> I love dancing. And seeing my old friends. >> The music and the food and the pizza. Hanging out with friends. Everyone I know from other schools that I see. It's a good time. >> Catalina: they all look so great! Organizers say the special ed students will already be thinking about next year's prom once this year's prom is over.

>>> For over 30 years, there weren't any breeding piper plovers in our province. But fortunately that eventually changed and nests can even be found nearby. >> This year actually marks the 17th year that the plover has been back at wasaga beach provincial park. >> Catalina: all of the piping plovers born in the great lakes area are banded in an effort to learn more about hire life history and identification that identifies the birds. That is how the birds canada team tracks their return reminding the public how special that is. >> Piping plover are a very vulnerable species. This year in ontario we only have about eight breeding individuals and across the entire population that number is only about 200. And so we really do need to put our efforts in together and make sure that we can support these birds on the beach. So if if you are visiting wasaga please make sure you stay out of the fenced area. Make sure you're cleaning up after yourself not bringing any extra garbage or food to the beach so it attracts predators such as gulls, foxes or skunks and giving the birds lots of space. >> Catalina: along with bird watching there is a chance for you to get involved. That is a little bit below seasonal temperatures at 21°. The record high was back in 1881 at 30°. And we had over 15 hours of daylight. Looking ahead to the forecast radar, some cloud cover making its way overnight. And around 5, 6 A.M. we're going to see some sprinkles, some showers. There is also a risk ever thunderstorms but clearing by the late afternoon. Looking at conditions for tomorrow through south georgian bay lake simcoe, a high of 22°. All throughout the region. 60% chance of showers and risk of thunderstorm. Let's head down to york region now. Temperatures between 21 and 24 as the high tomorrow. Also, chance ofoughout the day and risk of thunderstorms. And a similar story up in muskoka, parry sound. 20° is the high in parry sound and huntsville. 20 trees throughout the rest of the region with a you risk of showers and thunderstorms. Five-day forecast for simcoe county we're going to get a a break from those showers on sunday with beautiful sunshine good day to go to the waterfront festival. Showers to start the work week on monday with a high of 18 on tuesday and clouds on wednesday with a high of 15 degrees. The five-day forecast for york region: sunshine as well on sunday with a nice 25°. But dropping down to 20 on monday with a chance of showers. That will continue on to tuesday with a high of 17. Clouds on wednesday. And a high of 17.
