[music continues] [ ] it's one of the busiest weekends of the year end out of a pure the 50th anniversary of waste weekend will bring thousands of runners and spectators to the downtown core. >>> This is ctv news at five, I'm patricia boal. They are planning their prerace meals checking the forecast and laying out the gear. Thousands of runners getting ready to hit the pavement for the tamarack ottawa race weekend. A huge bump from last year in terms of participation. This year, 37,000 runners are looking to cross that finish line. Katelyn wilson joins us live with more. >> Reporter: it's supposed to be a beautiful weekend this weekend as participants were picking up the race kids today. The event is ready to celebrate more than 50 years. This year the goal is to raise more than $1 million for 98 charities, which is a record for the event kicked saturday and sunday will welcome more than 37,000 participants, 10,000 more than last year. For those participating, the story behind what motivates them is inspiring. Including the story of one woman who is running her first half marathon to raise money for the ottawa hospital, where she received treatment when diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 11. >> Right now they're focusing on that campaign to create tomorrow , which is the initiative to help build the new ottawa hospital campus and obviously, everyone in the community of ottawa want the best healthcare possible and if we want that there's a community responsibility to come together and raise that money to get the best healthcare possible in this city. >> Reporter: leah larocque who is an accomplished marathon runner was also on hand today welcoming the elite athletes at lansdowne. The lrt will run early starting at 5:00 am on sunday running between tunney's pasture and blair station, two hours before the marathon start time. >> Patricia: maybe running to the start line this year, thanks very much katelyn wilson live for us.um road closures to keep in mind this weekend. A section of the queen elizabeth driveway will be closed as of 8:00 am tomorrow. On saturday, most of elgin street will be closed as well. A small section of wellington and laurier also closed and on sunday, those closures stretch out further near the experimental... All the way to manor park. >>> Starting this summer, ontario will expand the sale of more alcoholic drinks to light gauche licensed grocery stores and convenience stores after labor day. Kimberley fowler joins us with details. >> Reporter: grabbing a pack of beer or a bottle of wine before you hit... Or even preparing for your backyard barbecue this summer, it is about to get easier. The ontario government announcing today the expanded sale of alcohol beverages earlier than planned. The expansion rollout will begin later this summer as of august first, 450 licensed grocery stores will be allowed to sell ready to drink beverages like coolers and large pack sizes. By the end of october every convenience store, grocery and big-box store in ontario will be able to sell beer, cider, wine and ready to drink alcohol beverages if they choose. >> Beginning august 1st, people will be able to bite ready to drink alcoholic beverages like coolers and seltzer's at grocery stores that currently sell wine or beer. These stores will also be able to sell larger pack size beers, like the 30 pack case of beer that's popular in québec and I know, peter you go visit note visit back where you originally came from and you love those big 30 pack cases of beer. You don't have to go to québec to get that anymore, you can get it right here in ontario! >> Reporter: the rollout of selling averages and bigger formats of beer wasn't supposed to happen until 2026. That accelerated timeline comes with a 225 million-dollar payment to the beer store to help with the transition. That payment is to reimburse the beer store which had exclusive rights to sell 12 and 24 packs of beer until 2025. Also the retail locations that opt into sell alcohol will be able to set their own prices but, of course,, they must keep within the provinces regulated and among. >> Patricia: kimberley fowler, live for us, thanks.

>>> With the announcement that alcohol sales will be coming to convenience stores by september,'s mall business owners say it's a long-overdue opportunity to increase sales. Store owners say, with the sale of beer or wine, other products like snack or ice will be purchased in partnership. Convenience and renfrew anticipates adding rent gauche alcohol sales will boost 25% of business. It also doesn't expect any issues telling the age restricted product. >> We've been doing it for years, so, you know, kids want to buy lottery tickets as much as they want to buy beer. Three people died, all in their early twenties. Five others injured. Jack richardson joins us now with more. >> Reporter: earlier this week, opp wrapped up their unseen investigation in the buck bay area of bob's like. While we wait for those details, friends and family have taken to social media to remember the victims. Last weekend this speedboat collided with his fishing boat killing a man into women. 22-year-old juliet ko tape was a recent graduate from st. Lawrence college. She co- owned a business with her mom. She was described as being extremely excited to start the next chapter of her life. 23-year-old riley works for front and act -- frontenac problem -- plumbing service. They say they had the pleasure of watching him grow into an outstanding young man with so much potential. He would have turned 24 on june 1st. 21-year-old kayla... Is described by family and friends as being creative, with a great sense of humour, and having so much to offer. No matter what the investigation leads to the fact is, three people who were just starting their adult lives were tragically taken far too soon. >> Patricia: jack richardson, thank you.

Around 9:15 pm, emergency crews arrived to find a woman in critical condition. She was brought to hospital that sadly died picture she's not been identified. Police look to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or who has that can footage. >>> A man in hospital with serious injuries after a shooting in the city's east end. Could happened around 9:40 last night. At a building on ogilvie road near centrum boulevard. Paramedics found a man and his twenties at the scene suffering from gunshot wounds. He was brought to hospital in serious and nonlife-threatening condition. The guns and gangs unit is investigating the shooting. No word on any suspects or arrests. >>> An update on a disturbing story we brought you last night. In ottawa man is now facing animal cruelty charges after a costly was stomped to death. It happened tuesday morning in a parking lot near the... Mall where mother goose had laid her eggs in a planter box. Police say the man stomped on one of the babies shortly after attached. The 68-year-old has been charged with causing unnecessary pane and suffering to an animal. His name has not been released. The goose parent and to quote surviving babies have been safely relocated to a pond. >>> Ontario will move to automatic license plate renewals as of july first. Premiere doug ford announced the plan for automatic renewals back in the winter but there was no date for it to begin. The automatic renewals will only be available for drivers in good standing, those with parking tickets or toll bills will still have to do it manually. The ford government ended manual registration fees... Drivers are required to renew their plates on their birthday each year. >>> Summer is just about here and for many at the time for some sun.
