Our girls have tragically lost their mommy, and now they're about to lose their daddy as well. Therefore, I respectfully ask the court for life as not to compound their loss and suffering. I am grateful, however, that the court can only determine my fate on earth, while my soul is in god's hands. >> Reporter: then judge bruce kyle gave his decision. >> I judge people's actions, not their souls. And it's the order of the court that you be sentenced to death, sir. >> Reporter: teresa's family, convinced of mark's guilt, spoke to the media, her sister annie lisa acknowledging that with this verdict and sentence, another life will be taken. >> It feels like justice but it's hollow. Because it's so terrible for mark's family, and we have tremendous compassion for them. Jimmy rogers was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole. His appeal was denied in march 2022. Mark sievers appeal was also denied. He will sit out his remaining days on death row. For the detectives who worked so hard to find teresa's killers, the case may be over, but it will always feel bittersweet. >> We should feel good about what we were able to do, because we brought some form of justice to the family. But it's not gonna -- >> Reporter: you can't bring her back. >> Exactly. >> Reporter: and to think how different the investigation may have been but for a woman named rose. >> I don't feel like a hero. Teresa sievers even today on those youtube videos, promoting health, healing, and a good life. She had helped so many spreading her gospel. Tragically, her message, like her life, cut short before she was finished.

Came down at an immigration and refugee board hearing. His lawyer had said all that is required to deport him is proof he is not canadian and that he committed a serious crime. He drove into a stop sign and into the path of a junior hockey team bus, killing 16 people and injuring 13 others. He was sentenced to eight years in prison and granted full parole last year. He is a permanent resident originally from india, his lawyer adds the deportation process could take months or years.

One passenger claiming the card doesn't work consistently enough to be worth the hassle. >> The service is iffy, the cards don't work 90 percent of the time, you can ask anyone who uses it. >> Reporter: new fair prices were presented at city council on thursday after reports showed an overview of fares, ridership numbers in the status of the low income pass program, but according to ets fair prices have not government on a been for years and the price adjustments were approved by city council in 2022. >> We are going to bring back report to council, they did give us the motion to look at all options in terms of how to adjust the gap, we will do that research and analysis with a follow-up report at the end of august. >> Reporter: from edmonton, city news.

>>> The saddledome, olympic plaza, and changes to canada olympic park, while some calgarian's field the olympic legacy is beginning to fade. >>> I thought it might be ai generated. >> Reporter: but the images real, the rcmp are allowing indigenous officers to wear ribbon skirts as part of the dress uniform, but the move to advance cultural change has sparked outrage, some people say the move is simply pandering, while others say given the rcmp's history and reputation among indigenous people that makes this a bad look. >> The rcmp, one of the first jobs they had was to push indigenous people onto reservations and forced them to stay there, they had another job later on when they had to go to the communities, grabbed the children, and bring them to residential school and put the parents in jail if they didn't give up their children. >> Reporter: according to the native women's association of canada, ribbon skirts symbolize sacred traditions and our and embodiments of resilience to colonial cultural erasure. The rcmp says the move to add ribbon skirts came from indigenous officers themselves, in a statement to city news rcmp says the idea came from the women's indigenous network, noting there are 311 regular rcmp members who self identified as indigenous women, nonbinary, or to spirit. The statement adds the ribbon skirt, a women led initiative supports employee pride, advances cultural change in the organization, and helps to build and mend relationships with indigenous people and communities. Accrete woman and 60 scoop survivors says she understands why indigenous women within the rcmp would want to wear the ribbon skirt, but feels the rcmp passing the work of reconciliation off to indigenous women. >> If it is indigenous lead it means the rcmp as an institution isn't doing the work, its indigenous people putting this forward and making this initiative and wearing the ribbon skirts and the rcmp is like okay, that's good. >> Cultural transformation and reconciliation are not a cop in a ribbon skirt. It is the restitution of indigenous land and life and the ending of state sanctioned violence and systematic violence as we know it. >> Reporter: assistant professor and red river métis woman dr kristin voss is writing a book about the history of policing, she says the rcmp relationship with indigenous people remains uncomfortable adding that if police want to wear the skirt more progress on reconciliation must happen. >> If it was ever appropriate it would be when these colonial institutions adopt and fulfil all 94 calls to action as set out in the trc, as well as the call to justice put forward in the final inquiry for missing and murdered indigenous women and girls. >> Reporter: in ottawa, city news.
