Thank you for joining us. First at five, the serve, but that, reflect the st. John police force inclusion and recruitment caps today. To encourage and attract new members to represent maritime is. Cds avon mcrae was there and he joined us now. Avery. >> Around 30 people took part in this first of its kind event held in a st. John's police headquarters, where they learn to just what it takes to become an officer in the port city. >> Whether it was in a formal classroom setting,. >> Or more hands-on work, those taking in the first ever inclusion and diversity recruitment camp got a good grasp of the day-to-day life of a st. John police officer. >> I was not exactly sure what to expect coming in here today but I'm very pleased with the outcome and how it involves people. >> Staff sergeant says those enrolled all have some interest in the field. And the more diversity on the force the better. >> The benefit of having different languages and policing and being able to speak the native languages of the different individuals who would come across on day-to-day is a huge benefit. In understanding and of course there's an understanding of of the different cultural backgrounds as well. That they bring to the table. >> Those taking part also see the benefit. And hope to add to a more diverse patrol in the city that is becoming more multicultural. >> Being able to speak to a policeman, most of the people. >> Sometimes scared. >> There are some communications, one is not able to explain them selves to a different person from a different ethnic group, is always a little bit more to the occasion. >> The st. John applauds the police lead in that diversifying efforts. >> For the community to try people... Including the police force. When I see somebody who is a very, who looks like me speaks my language, I'm at ease, I think he understands me and I understand him. >> This course will not be a one-off for st. John police but another program planned for later this summer. >> The ultimate goal of this course was to recruit more officers to the force. With the hopes of those who took part in today's event to share what they learn with friends and family in an effort to generate even more interest in joining the st. Turn our attention to todd we had another busy day in the newsroom hi todd. >> Coming about 6:00 the owner of northern... Will see the company abandon plans to reopen its county mill. And that's after a reach an agreement with the nova scotia government. The company will now focus on reopening a pulp plant in southwestern nova scotia. It's a compromise that both sides are saying could be beneficial, we will get the details at 6:00. We have some new numbers for you on population growth in the maritimes. And looks like monk and in halifax are leading the way when it comes to people moving to the area. In fact leaving the country. A lot of that growth is being driven by newcomers, and people moving here from other provinces. Of course there are challenges and benefits will talk about those at six.

Kalin mitchell tracking hurricanes, but severe weather that's coming into the region. >> Kalin: we have severe it's on her sons are coming in out of the state of mains to western areas of new brunswick, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for much of the western brunswick, that means the conditions are prime for thunderstorms to develop that could bring along hazards including downpours, strong wind gusts and some sizable hail. Thunder storm warning issued for a few locations, a pair a particularly strong thunderstorms moving in at the moment. You can see that the line of thunderstorms is a bit broken, has developed and moving in out of the state of maine, a pair of thunderstorms that I mentioned are on the stronger side one of them in the vicinity of... Reporting plenty of lightning lightning strikes in the last 10 to 15 minutes, as well as a second strong thunderstorm that's just now approaching the woodstock area. Taking a look at the timing of these thunderstorms moving fairly quickly west to east near 60 kilometres an hour that meet location is likely to be in that northernmost thunder storm within the next few minutes. Looking at the thunderstorms moving toward south areas like portland at risk of getting into that thunderstorm as well. As well as woodstock area. Very shortly as well. I would like to welcome into the centre today we had a very vibrant, organization here weave been in dartmouth for over 40 years. Where multiple services for seniors out of the centre, we provide meals on wheels service out of the centre we are the largest in nova scotia. For meals on wheels. We provide over 300 meals per week. For dartmouth and surrounding communities. Of those 300 meals, some of those clients are free of charge. Because they are unable to pay. And we do that through the generosity of our community, and the money that they donate to us to support us. We are a not-for-profit organization. Because we are not a business we rely very heavily on our community, to support us in doing things in our community. We have all manner and type of entertainment and involvements for seniors. Where they can come together and talk to one another, and enjoy each other's company. We welcome all seniors. We are here to serve, everything from... If you're looking for information as to where to find help in any manner whether it's housing, food, medical care or such, call the centre. We will do our very best to make sure that you get anything that you truly need. As each year goes by our senior centre becomes more and more vital to those in our community particularly those who do not blast with family close to them. Things have changed greatly for seniors recently in society. We find that one of the biggest obstacles that seniors face is loneliness. We pride ourselves in being their family.
