the cost of living has dominated debate in this country of late. So how has that affected how canadians see their own financial situation? The survey asked just that and found most people feel they're worse off than others. The survey of more than 1200 canadians was conducted last month by narrative research. Margaret chapman of narrative joins us in our halifax studio to break down. The numbers is really interesting. Margaret chapman. So most people think others are better off, including those in households that but earn above $100,000. It seems strange. White. What would that be? >> Well, there's a real difference between people's actual finances and how they feel about them because the median. Household income in the country, it's $84,000, but a lot of people who earn over $100,000 to their household actually feel less wealthy than the average. So it's this feeling versus actual, which points to us anyway, to cost of living. A lot of people are feeling the pinch and it's causing them to feel like they're not getting ahead. >> Yeah, I've heard it referred to as 5 flation that you get caught up in that vibe, that that the economy is just not doing well. And you sort of, you know, slot in that. How it, how has it been to do, move the needle on that because it's psychological. >> I don't know how you fix it, but it's certainly the case and we observe behaviours that most people are feeling like they have to check the prices of groceries before they put them in the cart and actually purchased them there's a lot of other around taking vacations and buying luxury goods, all sorts of things being in debt. Even people who feel wealthy are not doing they're not going on vacation because they're feeling like it's too expensive. So it's just another indicator along with a lot of research. We've done that people are worried about inflation and the cost of living that shows that people despite their income, are not feeling like they're getting ahead. >> And we've seen this in the states, in particular word because there's an upcoming election. The, the current biden administration's kind of fighting that same sense. But obviously we're, we're feeling it here in canada as well. It is any anything in particular about the maritimes that you can extrapolate from your numbers. >> Well, we're very much like the rest of the country. This is pretty widespread. Only 14% of the population feels like their wealthier than everyone so even though there is, of course, a 50% of people above the median and 50% below, only 14% actually feel like they're above the median. >> It is a fascinating survey, margaret. And we certainly appreciate you coming in to share those numbers with us. That's market wrap and and our halifax studio, thank you.
