>> On ctv news at 5. >> It's a space for jordan to live on forever, something that means a lot to us in his memory on what would have been jordan boyd's 27th birthday, a new clinic at the qeii bears his name and lasting legacy. >> It's just wonderful to see the smiles that we had today. >> Support for seniors in new brunswick nursing home goes the extra mile to involve its members in the community. >> Cooling off temperatures coming down just a few degrees for the region this weekend. >> Live from the maritimes news centre. This is ctv news at 5. >> Good evening and welcome to ctv news at 5. I'm maria panopalis. Thank you for joining us. First at 5 tonight, hot tickets. If you looked into attending a big concert recently, you know how pricey admission can be. So this week, the U.S. department of justice launched a lawsuit against the biggest ticket seller in north america, accusing them of any legal monopoly. Ctv's jesse thomas looked into the langston expenses. Some maritimers have gone to to put themselves in the audience. Jesse. Hey maria. Yeah, we've spoken with the several music fans who say it's >> Sometimes easier, even sometimes cheaper to see their favourite musicians or bands perform in other countries, rather than trying to find tickets closer to home here in canada. And the u.s.. >> Andy's U.K. tackling flew from halifax to germany this morning with family to see the metallica show in munich. The 31 year-old doesn't line travelling for her favourite musical acts. She says tickets are easier to get and often cheaper. It's getting really out of hand that their costs are so high and it's just really hard to even access the tickets. Anyone who goes to big thing concerts here in canada or in the U.S. knows it's hard enough to get your hands on a but it went so much easier. I literally got general admission and I was in and out in less than two minutes with my tickets which has never happened before in my entire life. >> Reporter: the department of justice in the U.S. has filed a lawsuit against live nation, the parent company of ticketmaster, suggesting the concert promoter is maintaining an illegal monopoly which the department of justice says is resulting in soaring ticket prices and the boxing out of business competition. >> The ticketing business is infamously a little bit sketchy, for lack of a better word. There's a lot of practises that are frowned upon but they get away with it and particularly if you control the venue, you control the artists, you control the ticketing system, you can do almost anything. >> Reporter: terry smith and his colleagues founded a ticket selling platform aiming to be transparent and make tickets easier to purchase and at a fair cost with fewer add-on fees. Smith is in favour of the american lawsuit and hopes canada pays close attention. >> Live nation controls a lot of these venues and then ticketmaster is the only player that gets to sell tickets in there. >> Reporter: ticketmaster merged with live nation in 2010, a move the U.S. government approved but now the U.S. is looking to bring more competition into the ticket vending market. Meanwhile, concert-goers like taplin continue to pay the price or go to great lengths to put themselves in the audience. The company controls or owns 265 concert venues across north america. Live nation says the lawsuit is baseless attributing high ticket prices to increasing production costs and artist popularity and ticket reselling. The canadian government is not involved in the lawsuit but likely watching very closely what happens, maria. >> Thank you, jesse. Ctv's jesse thomas in halifax with the story that will not end here. And it actually brings us to tonight's web poll. We are asking, have you ever skipped a big show you wanted to attend due to high prices? Your options are simple. "yes" or "no." go to CTVNewsAtlantic.ca to weigh in and see the latest poll results. Todd battis joins us with a look at the headlines. >> Hi, maria. Those trying to get around halifax this summer, be warned. It is going to be difficult and you could be following a new road match. Major road construction in downtown halifax and one of the bridges as we've mentioned in the past is going to mean detours and gridlocks, slow-moving traffic, you name it. Coming up at 6:00, we'll give you all the details. Police in st. John's say they increased patrols in rockwood park following the report of a sexual assault earlier this week. Tonight, ctv's nick morris speaks with a frequent user of rockwood calling for greater police presence in the area. Teachers in new brunswick say they're already short staffed

and claim things will get worse as 20% of teachers in the anglophone school districts are eligible to retire within the next couple of years. Their suggestion of what should be done? Comes to us from laura brown tonight at 6:00. Right now, let's go to the weather centre. Kalin mitchell with your friday forecast. Kalin? >> Thank you, todd. And like much of this week, we had some very warm late may temperatures around large parts of the maritimes today. Some communities seeing high temperatures rise up towards the MID-20s, a little bit cooler on parts of the coast, and cool through northern areas of new brunswick as cloud cover and showers develop. Let's look at those showers in just a moment. Thankfully, though, this evening, thunderstorms are not as widespread and not as strong. Want to talk about dewpoint temperatures which is that measure of moisture in the air. Less humid air is starting to come into the maritimes. You can see dewpoints actually knocked down into the high single digits. That drier air is expected to remain in place through much of the weekend. You will notice dewpoints get a bump up on tuesday, not only in fredericton but also for halifax and for charlottetown. And for the reason for that is that we are expecting some rain on tuesday still. So thrall be adding moisture to the air, of course. Taking a look at the winds throughout the south and southwest, sustained in a lot of cases between 10 and 30 kilometres per hour. We are getting occasional gusts, reporting between 30 and 40. Blustery near the annapolis valley. Radar and satellite, we have some scattered showers making their way across areas of new brunswick. There are a few small thunderstorms within these showers, they are popping up and coming to an end just as quick and most of that shower activity will be ending as we move through this evening. More on the weather coming up later on, maria. >> Thank you, kalin. >>> Retirement has reinvigorated an old passion project for a B.C. man. As ctv's adam sawatzky shows us, his homes for gnomes are opening doors for his community. >> Hello. >> Reporter: charlie picard started regularly visiting dozens of these little doors. >> Hello, anybody home? >> Reporter: after a co-worker introduced him to this book about their inhabitants. >> He said charlie, we'll go build a little gnome fairy home for the kids. >> Reporter: after constructing something similar to this in secret, watched their children discover it with wonder. >> I still remember my daughter's eyes were just exploding with magic. She saw magic. It was wonderful. >> Reporter: decades later, and recently retired, his wife reminded him of that moment. >> Wonderful to feel creative and be able to make something out of a piece of wood. >> Reporter: and charlie began building a bunch of gnome homes in an undeveloped lot much to the delight of the neighbours. >> It just made my heart soar. >> Reporter: what inspired charlie to make even more and after getting permission, placed more than 45 doors in almost a dozen different locations. >> It was about making other people happy. Especially children. >> Reporter: at the time, charlie never imagined how meaningful those moments might also be for the adults who happened upon them. >> And the woman was just in tears telling me the story. >> Reporter: tears of gratitude from the daughter who saw how a gnome door inspired her mom with alzheimer's to suddenly recall long-forgotten happy memories. Tears of hope from the mother who saw how the door at the transition house inspired her child who she fled from violence with to smile for the first time in months. And tears of solace from parents visiting the little spirits garden at the burial park where charlie gifted a gnome castle. >> Ooh, that was a tough one. But I wanted to do it. >> Reporter: perhaps felt he had to do it. Because like he regularly removes each door to repaint, repair, or replace it before reinstalling every one, patrick knows that if you're fortunate enough to make magic, it's your responsibility to maintain it. >> What really is important to me is giving back, acknowledging what you've been given, and in return, making other people happy. >> Reporter: adam sawatzky, ctv news, nanaimo. >> A very sweet way to live your life. All right. We're going to take a little break. Still ahead, jordan boyd's lasting legacy. We'll visit the new clinic in his name and highlight the profound impact of his life which was cut short. And a little later, we have this story... >> I'm alanna pickrell in port elgin, new brunswick. Tonight, friday fun day. The nursing home is the place to be today with multiple events going on. At the heart of it all, coming together as a community. reminding women to know their risks for heart disease and stroke.
