Construction is closing a portion of downtown for months. >> Combine that with bridge closures and it could be a long few months. Ctv's jonathan macinnis reports. >> It's going to be a summer of detours and patients for drivers around halifax. Starting june 17th, the section of barrington street from upper water to duke street will be closed for 6 months. >> Barrington street has to be lowered significantly in terms of great. We have to install new services in barrington street to marry with the new aligned barrington street directly behind me. As well. We need to redevelop the on-street transit. >> A contingency plan is in place to limit the disruption. It's all part of the city's 122.6 million dollar redevelopment plan for the cogswell district of the same day that we're closing barrington street cogswell street will open. >> And it will provide a detour route connecting to barrington street to the north directly behind me. There is another major project. Motorists will need to plan for the 60,000 vehicles a day of the cross them. Okay. Download the ctv news app. >> A cyclist was rushed to hospital after being hit by a car and nova scotia's kings county rcmp say the crash happened shortly after midnight on highway one in berwick, west. Police say a driver travelling west collided with a cyclist. The 20 year-old cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver was not physically injured. The investigation is ongoing. New brunswick could lose a 5th of its teachers in english school districts over the next 5 years due to retirements. It's a staggering amounts and some are calling for a better recruitment plan to stop it from becoming a crisis. Ctv's laura brown has more. >> Of the new brunswick teachers association, 6500 members. 1200 are eligible to retire within the next 5 years. A large number at a time when the province is already running short on qualified teachers. Teachers are stretched really, really thin right now and not having the enough resources at times can really be, can really be during. And peter legacy claims the situation could become a real crisis. >> If decision makers don't act now. And I do have, you know, concerns that it gets lost, maybe over the summer months and teachers are in the same place come fall. The system is relying on supply teachers like you see says the english school districts have issued 1011 local permits. >> To certified supply teachers who have a varying degree of post-secondary education of those 164 are under the age of 50 summer. Universities have not feel dollar education seats. >> That we've asked him to do that. The department of education did release a long-term report last month, promising to address the issues facing the system, which includes a recruitment and retention plan. Police have charged 67 year-old gerald mores, hudson of hebbville with 4 counts of sexual assault and sexual interference. Lunenburg rcmp arrested hudson earlier this week. He was released and will appear in court at a later date. Police say more charges are likely. Police in st. John say they've increased their presence in rockland park following the report of a sexual assault earlier this week. The tracy doyle says a report of a sexual assault earlier this week at rockwood park in st. John has changed. Everything made me really nervous because I go through here by myself. >> I mean, I'm the same age is the woman that was attacked. So I mean, it really scares me. And I think that the younger women that are going through here as well. The alleged attack happened on tuesday afternoon. >> At approximately 2:15pm 50 year-old woman was walking on a trail near lily lake when she passed by an unknown man. She then heard footsteps approaching from behind her for being grabbed and taken to the ground by the unknown man who attempted to sexually assault or the woman was able to get away. And there were no serious physical injuries. >> The victim immediately call police and the canine unit was brought in to help search for the man, but he was not located. The suspect is described as being white pale skinny with no teeth. And approximately 30 years old with brown hair, brown eyes and stubble. He was wearing dirty sweat pants and a t-shirt. St. John police say they've upped their patrols around the park that will include a combination of both foot patrols and a vehicle. >> Passing to the area as well during different times of the day. Tracy doyle would like to see more police in the park more often make yourself known. I mean, if they don't have to live, if they are limited in resources. Police are now clarifying a 0 year-old victim was actually the driver of one of the vehicles rcmp had initially identified the man as a passenger and a pickup truck that collided with an oncoming car as the truck pulled into oncoming traffic. 3 people in the car died in a teenage boy in the same vehicle was seriously injured. Well in 20 year-old man in the truck was also injured. And later arrested, although police say he was never charged. The police investigation determined alcohol was a factor in the crash. Another progressive conservative mla is bowing out of new brunswick politics. Andrea anderson-mason told ctv news she will not run in the october provincial election. The mla for fundy the aisle st. John west has been in the blaine higgs government for the last 6 years. But she says she doesn't feel her skills are valued any longer and didn't want to stay just for the paycheque anderson-mason becomes the 12th pc mla to announced they're not running again. The prime minister was in the maritimes today to announce the federal government will cover the cost of contraception and diabetes medications. It's part of the first phase of the national pharmacare plan. Prime minister justin trudeau wasn't to highlight announcements made in this year's budget. Birth control pills, iuds and the morning after pill will be covered under the pharmacare plan as well.
