Your local ctv news starts right now. [ ] [ ] [ ] ctv's national news, canada's number one newscast. [ ] [ ] [ ] >> Tonight on ctv news, failure to unite the right in b.c.. >> John rustad decided to go with the faction that says no, no deals for anything. >> Why talks between the B.C. united and B.C. conservatives fell apart, could vote splitting, paved the way for another ndp victory. >> The way that they marketed, it was messi's coming to

vancouver. Don't miss out greatest player in the world. >> The mask over messy calls for compensation from angry fans. Now that the soccer superstar will be a no show this weekend. What the whitecaps are saying. And what of the vital a bridge in the broadway subway have in common. The province quietly revealing that both mega projects are significantly delayed again. >> This is ctv news with mi jung lee. >> Good evening, thanks for joining us. They are 2 of the province's biggest infrastructure projects that have already faced delays. Now the ndp admits the finish line for the new patella bridge and broadway subway is even further away. Abigail turner has following this in the breaking news centre. Abigail. The government usually releases bad news on a friday afternoon. No doubt more delays are frustrating for people who are inconvenienced by this construction. What's the latest? >> Mi jung is definitely a major setback for commuters. The broadway some subway project and the new patella bridge are now expected to open one year later than previously announced. That means the subway project won't be operational until at least 2027. Well, the bridge won't open until 2025. This is the second time these projects have been pushed back. That hello was supposed to open last year, but was delayed because of the covid-19 pandemic. The broadway project was supposed to open within 2025, but issues with tunnel lingan excavation and a strike complicated that. >> Whenever a severe shortage of things like schools, we can't afford to just have projects not only delay with the impact that has on our world economy and transportation delays, but also what it does to restrict further capital projects are just for you need in this province being built. >> The is slated to cost nearly 1.4 billion dollars in the subway project, nearly 2.8 billion. There's no word on how much this latest setback could increase that to me jump. All right. Thank you, abigail. >> Now to our shifting political landscape. The pressure was on to unite the right of centre vote and stache. Another victory away from the ndp. But the B.C. united party B.C. conservatives, we're able to hammer out a deal and both sides came out swinging today. Ctv's rob buffam has the story. >> Disappointing that after weeks of speculation and negotiation between bc's to right of centre parties, plans for a deal to avoid vote splitting fell apart. >> We're done I was very clear, I would make a genuine, sincere effort. We made that effort. We've received the answer. Now we're moving on john rustad conservatives have been surging in the polls competitive with the B.C. ndp. Well, full cans B.C. united have been plummeting. F-kin says last night rested rejected a proposed framework for a so-called non-competition deal. Ultimately, he decided to his interest away. The public interest. >> The proposed framework involved in cummins for each party. 15 B.C. united and to B.C. conservatives running unopposed by the other party and 47 B.C. conservative candidates. And 46 B.C. united running in the 93 ridings. The notion that you're going to be asking B.C. conservative candidates who are already nominated in ridings, where B.C. united incumbent is defending territory. >> I was always going to be a deal-breaker. I look at the offer that came in. I expect you to be completely irrational and unreasonable. After weeks of relected diplomacy between the 2 leaders, the gloves came off fast and furiously today. They've got some candidates that I think are extremely problematic in the most. British clements would say that is far too extreme. Seems to be more boat than it is about actually doing what's right for the people of british columbia. >> Meanwhile, the ndp clearly happy about the sudden bickering between the report is couldn't resist or shot. >> They're squabbling over backroom not even paying attention to a british colombians. Terrible. >> Former B.C. liberal premier christy clark. Among the established right who are concerned in urging the 2 leaders to reconsider a so disappointed in where this seems to be going. I don't think either one of them is taking o y's risk here. If they don't come together, neither one of them can win a gamble. Both leaders are staring down and both seem willing to take. >> Rob buffam joins us from victoria with more rob. There was plenty of tension today after news that the that the deal would sideways. Is this the end of any chance for the 2 parties to work together? Well, that's a good question. Mi jung. >> Both leader did not. Both leaders didn't rule out the possibility of some kind of coalition government after the election of there is enough mlas who are elected to form government, putting them together and interestingly, critic christy clark and I

spoke to earlier today said that she remained optimistic that there might be some kind of deal. She said she would be happy to get involved and helping out any way. She was asked whether it was drafting something or tripping around the edges issue, said. But she also added that any deal would have to be brokered by both leaders face to face. So a lot of disappointment on the right today, but still, I a glimmer, a flicker of hope. Mi jung. Yeah, we still have 5 months to go before the election. Ok. Thank you, rob. >> Well, it was supposed to be the biggest event of the whitecaps season, but that fizzled when the team announced superstar lionel messi will not be making the trip here. Now fuming fans who shelled out big bucks a they should get some money back. Ctv's isabella's after easy on what the club has to say. >> The whitecaps insisted they just found out about the news to we learned, but maybe 2 hours before we kaitlin dahl, it was all a message that message that argentine footballer lionel messi would not be making the highly anticipated trip to vancouver to play along with former fc barcelona teammates luis suarez and sergio bruce katz. A fixture that will see him start a season. Well, it's a it's fun. You know, unfortunately, not job numbers and we can now we can do about it. A blow to fans, many paying top dollar for tickets, upper bowl seats costing about $300 each. I mean, they tripled them in price and that he doesn't even show up. So super super disappointing is the only chance I was. I would ever get to see him. So. >> I was, I was pretty fired up and then yeah, pretty let down for sure. Politicians even weighing in a messy if you are listening. >> There are a lot of disappointed kids in british columbia today. I understand their frustration and I can tell them be shared. His frustration. As I said before, I think there's normal one more disappointed. Frustrated that no players. Well, not all of them. I could care less. >> I think their national cause and it is focused to get the most points possible and I think everybody should see the same. The club says it won't be compensating or providing credits to those who bought tickets, instead offering discounted food and drinks at saturday's game. >> It has more than 50,000 tickets have been sold for the match against inter miami fc. The stadium is going to be packed and they're going to be a lot of the fence end. That's what she is going to be electric. And I think we need to. >> You b p fed by these atmosphere and and the give back a fantastic performance, a performance that will be missing one of the sport's most talented players. But the whitecaps insist the match will be one to watch and hope it creates more supporters for the club here at home. >> Isabella's every see ctv news, vancouver. >> A high-risk offender who disappeared from a vancouver halfway house last fall. >> Sparking a 10 day manhunt learned his fate today. Randal hopley was given a 29 month sentence. But as ctv's ben nesbitt reports with credit for time served, he'll be out much sooner. >> Randal hopley burst out in anger is justice jennifer old seeing red through his criminal history. The convicted offender repeatedly telling her what she was reading. Oats was incorrect. >> I want to stop you. Pa police said twice youve got it wrong, she's got it wrong, he said, pointing at the prosecutor that is wrong. What you got written there. Last month, he pleaded guilty to 2 breaches of breaking a supervision order and one count of failing to appear in court. Hopley was placed on a long-term supervision order after serving his sentence for abducting a three-year-old boy in the southeastern B.C. community of sparwood in 2011. It's certainly a raise the flag from the perspective that this doesn't have to just occurring urban areas of canada. It can happen in small rule areas. >> Bolton handed hopley a 29 month sentence friday for the charges combined. Hopley was given credit for time already served in pretrial custody. >> Meaning he'll be released sometime in the fall of 2025.
