City's biggest away wins in the Champions League

City's 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava on Tuesday was the sixth time we have won by four or more goals in an away game in the Champions League.

Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden’s first goals of the season set us well on our way to the victory before the break in the Slovakian capital.

Second half finishes from Erling Haaland and James McAtee – with his first ever City strike - then ensured Pep Guardiola’s side picked up our first three-point haul in the league phase of the competition’s new format.

It was one goal shy of our record away win in the Champions League, which came in a 5-0 victory over Sporting CP in Lisbon in 2022.

All six such successes have come since Pep Guardiola took charge at City in 2016.

Here we'll look back at all of our biggest away wins in Europe's elite club competition...

4-0 v Feyenoord - 13/09/2017

John Stones scored twice as Pep Guardiola’s side made a flying start to that season’s European campaign, with Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus also on target in Rotterdam.

Stones headed home City’s fastest Champions League goal in the second minute and Aguero doubled the lead shortly after, before Jesus scored on his debut in the competition to make it 3-0 inside 25 minutes.

Feyenoord rallied after the break, but a second Stones header completed a comfortable evening’s work for Guardiola’s men.

4-0 v Basel - 13/02/2018

Ilkay Gundogan scored twice with Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero also on target as Pep Guardiola’s men dominated from start to finish against the Swiss champions.

It was the perfect night for the Blues with Fabian Delph, David Silva and Leroy Sane all making a welcome return from injury and skipper Vincent Kompany in commanding form at the heart of the defence.

City also had to overcome freezing temperatures and a testing pitch but proved a class apart.

5-1 v Club Brugge - 19/10/2021

City were magnificent from start to finish, with the 5-1 victory - if anything - flattering the hosts.

The scoreline equalled our winning margin in a Champions League away game, having beaten Basel and Feyenoord 4-0 - though this is the fi

Joao Cancelo opened the scoring, with Riyad Mahrez doubling the lead before the break.

Kyle Walker and Cole Palmer added further strikes in the second-half before Brugge pulled back a barely deserved consolation.

Mahrez then bagged his second of the night a few minutes later to restore order.

5-0 v Sporting CP - 15/02/2022

Bernardo Silva scored a brace, with Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling on target as City became the first team in the competition’s history to win five consecutive away games in the knockout stages.

Mahrez opened the scoring in the seventh minute, tapping Kevin De Bruyne’s cutback into an empty net to give City a dream start.

It got even better 10 minutes later when Bernardo showed outstanding technique to fire a half-volley in off the underside of the crossbar, before Foden stole in between two defenders to guide a Mahrez cross home at the near post.

Bernardo added a fourth, via a heavy deflection off Goncalo Inacio, a minute before half-time to put the result on the night beyond doubt, but City weren’t done.

Sterling rivalled the Portuguese midfielder in the scoring stakes as he curled a superb 20-yard effort into the top corner to move into the top 10 on City’s list of all-time highest goalscorers.

4-0 v Sevilla - 06/09/2022

Pep Guardiola‘s side began our Group G campaign in formidable fashion as we cruised to victory away in southern Spain.

Erling Haaland continued his blistering start to his City career by claiming a brace of goals to take his tally for the season to 12 from just even games.

Phil Foden and Ruben Dias were also on target in what was a hugely impressive display.

And a fine night’s work was rounded off with a dominant debut from new signing Manuel Akanji.

4-0 v Slovan Bratislava - 01/10/2024

City picked up our victory of this season’s competition with a superb performance against Slovan Bratislava.

It took just eight minutes for Pep Guardiola's men to take the lead with Ilkay Gundogan getting his first goal since returning to the Etihad in the summer.

Phil Foden then made it two shortly after, with an exquisite finish for his first goal of the new season.

City looked like we would run away with it in the first half, but good goalkeeping and three efforts against the woodwork kept the advantage at 2-0 at the break.

But we kept creating chances with 28 in total and extended our lead through Erling Haaland and James McAtee, who got his first goal for the senior side.
