Councils are hoping the other levels of government will help find a solution to the my problems facing the city. Mayor olivia chow broke down some of the very urgent and expensive issues to address. >> Toronto likely tomorrow. We'll have an item where hopefully we will say yes to more density, more options for housing on major street. They call it missing middle housing on major street and make it easier and cheaper to build small apartment buildings and townhouses along largest reits. It maintains strong neighbourhoods while providing more housing. >> I think that our our primary focus is really asking the federal government, the provincial government to recognize that toronto is the size of a province. We have more people than half the provinces. So we really do need different revenue tools. So share the tax guys, we need how. >> And councillors will also discuss a motion by brad bradford and jon burnside that would accelerate construction on the gardiner by allowing work to go on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They say that could shave a year off the timeline and say the city, a lot of money. That motion is expected to be tabled tomorrow. >> For doing not, they're looking into it right now and they are testing some of the equipment to see how noisy it is in the evenings to see if they can accelerate the work and how they can do that best. They're also consulting with industry experts. They are already employing people prefab occasion techniques of the materials. But of course, there was looking into more I welcome the suggestions by council burnside and cancer. Bradford. But in fact, I'm going to ask for that reports come back earlier and come back into life because I know that are capable city staff are already working on those things. >> I think it's reasonable to ask whether we can do it faster. There is no question that fixing roads is incredibly disruptive to the people who are used to using the roads. And that's true for king street, queen street adelaide and it's certainly 3 for the gardener. It's very disruptive to people's lives if their in the habit of using those roads. But there's no way to keep them operating. There are now 9 active encampments, which is down from 84 last summer. Hall has faced pushback from unhoused people and advocates for clearing camps in parks and public spaces. As toronto shelter spaces capacity. Gordon tanner is a general manager of the city's shelter support and housing administration. He talks about the main pillars of the new report. April of. >> This past we had an average everyday of 225 people that call the centre central intake phone service. They were unable to get matched with that by the end of the day as of may 5th, there were 256 encampments at 131 city-owned properties in toronto. But this work is about people. That's why we've evolved our strategic approach to encampments. Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home. And this report and the accompanying protocols are just one piece of the measures we're taking to offer certainty help indignity to people experiencing homelessness and surrounding communities. >> Councillor alejandra bravo says that the city is working with experts to ensure the issue of homelessness is addressed. And I particularly want to highlight recommendation for a pilot program of enhanced multi-sectoral case management support for people living outdoors of those people who have complex mental and physical health needs and that this would be done in partnership with community serving and health care experts. >> The report will go before the city's economic community development committee on may. 29th at a new report shows that more people over the age of 50 are experiencing homeless as and many shelters are not equipped to support those with complex medical needs. Here's ctv health reporter pauline chan. >> There are roughly 7500 people who are living on the streets of toronto of that, the proportion of older for aged 50 and above was about 36%. And doctor jillian alston says that number is rising quite alarming rate. And we're seeing the rise in the number of individuals who are experiencing homelessness in later life growing actually more than one would expect just from the population aging. The authors of the cmha study looked at homelessness across canada. We know that the housing crisis affordability way up there in terms of major causes of why we're seeing this. But in addition to canada's lack of affordable housing approaching retirement age is a time of transition. This is a time where many individuals are transitioning to a fixed income, which is often insufficient to actually me, you know, the daily cost of living and aging itself brings on health problems like dementia or mobility issues. Alston says few shelters can accommodate the needs of older people. Many have low cots for beds, difficult for those with mobility challenges. And if that individual has mobility, difficulty or dementia, that leads to some way. Finding difficulties are complex, medical needs that require a place to store medications. You can imagine how hard it is for individuals to actually. >> You know, need their day to do health and wellbeing needs preventing homelessness should be a priority. So this collisions on the eastbound 4, 1, happening in the express, right at the fort end four-three by that right lane as well as that right shoulder occupied them further east on the 4 and it looks like camera went out through keele collision, the express in the right lane, almost 4, 1, cameras are up. So show you the dvp on the northbound lanes of the don valley parkway approaching york mills. And right lane blocked this grass. Cutting crews are expected to leave the highway york mills. Once that happens, we'll keep in the know. Those delays extend 4 well before dawn mills and outside of camera view on the eastbound 401 in the express avenue road nother style that has the right lane blocked serious collision eastbound 4, 7, at woodbine. Still their vehicle and going into the ditch. So the 2 right lanes are blocked in problems or cambridge on the westbound for one of the highway. 24 only a single lane is getting by for ongoing multi-vehicle collision feel so it's a very busy wednesday. >> And no doubt.
