And our customers absolutely love that. So, Michael, you're warranty is very different from what other window companies offer. Yes, we offer a triple warranty that covers our windows, patio doors and the installation. A lot of companies here in the Toronto area warrant their windows. But what happens if that company goes out of business?

Well, exactly. Renewal by Andersen is a full service replacement window division of Andersen, which is a family of U.S. and Canadian companies. They've been around for over 115 years. So we'll be here to stand behind our warranty. You replace a lot of vinyl windows here in the Toronto area. People choose vinyl because they're sometimes less expensive, but vinyl is really 1950s technology, so they tend to warp and crack. Meaning that you'd have to do your windows again. Okay, so if you don't use vinyl, what are your windows made of? Andersen research and develop our fibrics window material for over 30 years before we install it into one. Home fibrics is a composite material that's two times stronger than vinyl and really just much more beautiful. And right now, renewal by Andersen has a great deal for Toronto area homeowners. Before May 31st, save $299 on every window and save $799 on every door. Get an extra $500 off your project. Plus, pay nothing for a year. And the city is expected to provide an update this hour on how it will be addressing homeless encampments going forward. We'll have more on that. Plus, canada ranks among the top 10 countries in the world for stolen vehicles. That is according to interpol. We'll take a closer look. Good afternoon and welcome to cp24 live at noon. Thanks for joining us. I'm leena latafat toronto city council is holding its monthly meeting gardiner. Gridlock is on the agenda. Let's go live to cp24 s beatrice vaisman at city hall. That and so much more being talked about at city hall >> Has certainly of the gardiner gridlock is one of the big topics as is infrastructure. Let's use the fountain at mel lastman square as a bit of a metaphor london because it's not actually spring any water. The reason being, if it did, it would cause water to go into the parking garage down below. And so much like the city's coffers, the fountain there is all dried up and that's part of the infrastructure fund. The infrastructure fund contributes to things like the roads, water mains, bridges, libraries, parks, potholes and transit here in the city. All the things that people who live work play here in the city care about. And so a new report saying it's going to cost 40 billion dollars over the span of the next 10 years to keep all of this infrastructure in good repair. Sounds. All right, right. Yeah, not so much because the city is 26 billion dollars short of that 40 billion to keep its infrastructure in good repair. So that's why you see things like the water fountain at mel lastman square, simply not being able to work that and so much more. The mayor saying 4 out of 10 of the infrastructure items have been rated as poor or very poor in their qualities that they need fixing. And the city needs cash from other levels of government. Here is what councillor jennifer mckelvie who chairs the infrastructure committee had to say. We have no choice but to go to the province and to the federal government. We are limited in the revenue tools that we have here in the city of toronto. >> We're also not able to run an operating deficit. So it's important that we continue that advocacy and they're also welcome to grant us new revenue tools and the ability to to gather some more money ourselves. >> Another is the gardiner expressway. We know 3 years of construction set to happen on the gardiner. It is a crumbling piece of infrastructure. It needs repair. But as councillor diane saxe, we'll hear from in the next half hour. Leena says when you let cracks get larger and you let you know a problem on your roof get bigger. And I've got to replace the whole roof or in this case, the whole expressway because it hasn't really been done over the years. Repairs having that been done, that is as they needed to be done. Such you councillor bradford and burnside are putting together a motion to go before council tomorrow to expedite the process to get construction quicker and what they wanted to be done. 24/7 hours a day, 7 days a week at to try to minimize disruption when it comes to commuters on business and on the economy of the city as well as councillor chang. If she would support that motion. What she thinks about the process of reef building and fixing the someone who

previously lived in asia. 24/7 is definitely something that should be normal. We have to find ways obviously to mitigate sound and you know, in japan, they're actually examining using ai to figure out which parts of a bridge need fixing. So I think we need to really examine what's happening in other countries and learn from their best meantime, other councillors like pasternak, for example, are asking the province to step up to help get construction going on the gardiner 24/7. So it action-packed agenda, they're on recess until 2:00 and then council will resume. It will be a marathon meeting leading into tomorrow as well. Alright beatrice vaisman live at city hall. A special tribute was held at city hall today for jaye robinson, who died last week after a long battle with cancer. >> A science to and >> A moment of silence was held in memory of the long time. Don valley, west councillor, flowers and a framed photo were placed on her spot in the chamber and her husband and 3 sons were in attendance as robinson's colleagues remembered her for her dedication and service services jay was a good friend of mine. I remember that when she was here in the council chamber, she would always walk by me and say, can you please tell them to be quiet. I condone this goes out to the family and she will be missed. Glancing through the many initiatives j brought to council. There was a trend. So its support for the outdoor athletics profit participation. Sports. >> Jason, great values. Many of us supporting tennis and soccer and the protection of urban forestry. She advocated for safer roads, fighting impaired driving and fiscal responsibility. I believe that her last motion seconded mayor chow as council to support establishing a professional women's soccer league in toronto. We shared a lot of important conversations and and shape me in part today >> You know, to be representing and fighting for my community and can do it, you know, to the degree that she was able to do it. And I say that having a little bit of a local connection, you know, might my in laws. >> Are up there, bayview and the 401 and they used to just rave about the customer service, which is really what our job is about customer service that they would get from jaye robinson and her team. >> I also. >> Very much bonded with che around her love of parks of trees and ravines. And that beautiful dawn valley that she had downtown west that she protected seriously and send our routines earn a living, breathing organisms in the city of toronto. We must take better care of them and leadership and support and spurred council 2 and staff to actually do that to pay attention to these very important green spaces. >> Robinson represented don valley west since she was first elected in 2010. She held several positions over the years, including ttc chair and chair of the infrastructure committee. She took a leave of absence and 29 told to undergo treatment for breast she returned to work in here later, but mostly attending meetings virtually. She leaves behind her husband 3 >> The above and beyond. Everything else. >> And so the city is expected to provide an update this hour on how it will be addressing homeless encampments moving forward. The update will include details on what the city is describing as it's evolving approach to encampments and supports for those experiencing homelessness. City hall has faced pushback from unhoused people and advocates for clearing camps with toronto's shelter system running at capacity. >> The briefing will be delivered by davenport councillor the bravo and the general manager of toronto shelter and support services set to get underway in about 20 minutes at 12 30 and we'll have some coverage is not coming out. Also making news, toronto police say one person has been injured in an overnight shooting downtown. It happened a little before. >> 12 30 this morning in the area of isabella and sherborne. Take a look at that crime scene. A man with a gunshot wound was found behind. >> A building he was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries. Police say the investigation is active and ongoing. You can see investigators on the ground there. Forensics too. And a number of evidence markers on the ground. So far, no word on a suspect. That investigation, of course, continues. For pro-palestinian protesters who are accused of vandalizing a downtown bookstore have had the charges against them dropped. 11 people were charged after the indigo at

bay and bloor was splattered with red paint last year and posters will put up accusing ceo heather reisman of quote, funding genocide and quote, the crown says it is withdrawing the charges because there is not a reasonable prospect of conviction. It will proceed with the remaining prosecutions. The 7 accused are charged with hate-motivated offences, including criminal harassment, mischief and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. Canada ranks among the top 10 countries in the world for stolen vehicles. That is according to interpol, the international law enforcement agency says it has identified more than 1500 stolen canadian vehicles across the globe since february. That is when the rcmp integrated its database for stolen vehicles with inter polls. The agency says auto thefts are a significant revenue source for organized crime groups and thieves are attracted to canada's abundant supply of highly prized suvs and crossovers. The federal government is marking some milestones with its new dental program. The government says 2 million seniors will have been approved to receive coverage under the canadian dental care plan. As of this week, it provides coverage for those without private insurance and a family income of less than $90,000 a year. The government says 90,000 seniors have already received service to the plan and almost 10,000 oral health providers are offering services covered by the program. Canadian dental care plan is going to make. >> Already making a real concrete difference in the lives of millions of canadians. Millions of canadians who won't have to wait until they're in real pain and only come see their dentist. Then have to spend a lot of money and end up maybe having to have their teeth pulled instead, people can come and get the regular care they need. >> When you think about what that means to have a smile that you're proud of that is such a fundamental issue of dignity in one of the things that is so incredible for me and I know it is for you as well, kristie, as we go across the country is to be able to see seniors have the pride of knowing they're seen and care for that they can how to smile that they're proud of. >> The plan is set to expand next month to include children and adults with a valid disability tax credit food banks. Canada is giving most provinces and territories poorer marks when it comes to addressing poverty and food insecurity. The organization is out with its 2024 poverty report card. It found almost 44% of people nationally feel they are financially worse off compared to last year. One in 4 say they're experiencing food insecurity. The federal government received an overall grade of d -7 out of 10 provinces, including ontario, also received a minus food. Banks canada says most governments poverty reduction efforts remain insufficient. Will have more on that coming up later on in the show. Meantime, data indicates food inflation has been steadily cooling. But a new poll shows most canadians believe it is still worse than it was a year or 2 ago. 64 1% of those surveyed by leger say they think inflation at the grocery store is getting worse. 25% say it's about the saying and just 6% believe it's getting better. Almost 30% think food inflation is primarily caused by grocery chains trying to increase profits, which major grocers have denied. 26% believe global economic factors are responsible. While 20% blame the federal government said van charlebois, the director of the agri-food analytics lab at dalhousie university joined us with the latest on this poll. You know >> The reality is that even though food are dropping, they've been dropping since march. By the way, if you look yesterday's cpi we're we're seeing prices for in many categories. Draw, but people aren't necessarily, she ling it, why because people are showing up at the grocery store, it less money. The cost of living is is clearly a problem for a lot of households that spend more to >> To make payments for their they're paying more to make sure they keep a roof over their heads. >> While food inflation is slowing down, stats canada says between april 2021 and april 2024 grocery prices increase to 21.4% as inflation continues to cool. Anticipation is building for a possible interest rate cuts. The rate of inflation slowed to a three-year low of 2.7% last month, inching closer to the bank of canada's target of 2%. Mortgage specialist janine. You'll joined us this morning with more on what you can expect. I've spoken to dozens of home buyers in the last month, couple of months where they're just waiting

that I think that they want to get into the housing market. But >> They're waiting to see what the bank of canada's may think once they actually it's almost a psychological thing once we actually get that first rate cut. I think there is going to a lot of people that are going to jump back into the market, just because they want to be there. They want to get into their first home where they want to move up. But interest rates have kept them from making that leap. I suppose. The central bank is set to make its next rate announcement on june 5th. Well, despite ongoing economic pressures, the majority of canadians still plan to spend money on a trip this summer. Deloitte canada's summer travel outlook shows 74% of canadians plan to travel within the country. >> Most say they will stay within their home regions rather than make a long track. The outlook says travellers plan to spend an average of about $2400 on transportation and lodging. 77 1% of canadians intend to spend more compared to last year. Our message to the free nations of the world was a for international recognition of our independence and deciding are distinct national identity artist article struggle and our rights to self-determination and justice. These countries stood up to say that the only path to peace and the only path justice and security in this region is by granting the palestinian people that independence, that rights and particular, the right to some of the termination. >> Spain, ireland and norway have all announced that they will recognize palestinian state next week for a closer look at this, we're joined live now by michael lynk, professor emeritus at western university and former un special rapporteur for human rights in the occupied palestinian territory. Michael, thank you for making time for cp24. How significant is this in from your perspective? Is it largely symbolic? >> It's I think it is significant, particularly coming from 3 important european countries. This now makes roughly 144 countries in the world who have recognized palestine as a state. That's roughly 75% of the un membership. Keep in mind that israel, I think is recognized by 165 palestine is not that much further behind it obviously is also symbolic because it does, their recognition isn't palestine as a state tomorrow in the sense of being able control its borders, run its own affairs. I like to it wants to be able to government, that's still a long ways off, but I think it's, it's going to beginning
