And 7.30 feeling like 34 outside from 299 queen street west. You're watching toronto's breaking news cp24. Good evening. I'm phil perkins. Thanks for joining us. Let's start out of the city first. A teenage boy is dead and a man is facing charges after a crash in vaughan. This happened around 10 45 last night. The area of martin grove and langstaff police say the 16 year-old boy who died was riding a mini bike when he was struck at a four-way stop near jacklin crescent. 24 year-old are new or cho on is charged in the crash. >> Sound like a firework rates or we came outside to see within 2 minutes of police already here, so that came outside to his already sirens like that sirens, but lights the flashing lights and we did see the mangled debris of the little dirt. Biker of the hit to. And other people came on the side the mangled body was up against that light post. Just ahead there. >> Now we understand chow on was out on bail on unrelated offences at the time of the crash. The 16 year-old boy who was killed has not been identified. Also man has been rushed to hospital after stabbing in the west end. Police have taped off a plaza parking lot in the area of jane and alliance avenue north of st. Clair. The stabbing happened around 5:00 this afternoon. Paramedics tell cp24 a man in his 20's has serious. But not life threatening injuries. No suspect information is available. Cause a downtown police are also investigating a stabbing near dufferin mall. Officers respond to the park across the street from the mall shortly after 4.30 this afternoon, man in his 20's was taken to hospital is expected to be ok. Officers are searching the area for a suspect described as a man with dreadlocks wearing all black clothing. And a man has been convicted of murdering his mother in leslieville in 2022. The jury ruled the 23 year-old dallas lee is guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his mother. 56 year-old tinley. Her body was found in several garbage bags in march of 2022 on eastern avenue after she was fatally stabbed in the apartment she shared with her son notley, killing his mother was never a question during the trial, defence had argued that it was the result of years of abuse. He'll be sentenced at a later date. And a woman found dead in lake ontario almost 7 years ago, has been identified as a missing person from switzerland. Police released this drawing of the woman after she was found dead in the humber bay in august of 2017 in january of last year, police used the woman's dna, determined that she had distant relatives in north america who had heritage. The traced back to a specific region of switzerland. Toronto police then got in contact, assist police to track down the woman's family and confirm the dna match. Bringing the cold case to a close. To the ongoing cabin to the university of toronto. Now where tonight they held a rally in advance of talks for the university administration tomorrow. For the latest, let's go to cp24 steve ryan, steve. >> Yeah, phil. The king's college circle has been the location where this encampment has been set up since may the second and that's a pro-palestinian supporters, both students and some outsiders who have been in encampment sense made the second and tonight they held a rally just outside of where the encampment is set up, where many people spoke in support of palestine and the demonstrators here tonight have said that they're going to continue demonstration. You continue having this encampment set up here until there to demands are met. And that is that the university of toronto disclose the relationship with israel and that the university of toronto divest any have with any israeli companies. They said until such time that those 2 demands are met. They're going to continue to demonstrate and make their voices heard this rally lasted for about an hour and then the very large crowd walked around the circle of king's college circle here. And now they're set north of where we are right now at the

entrance to the encampment, several speakers addressed the crowd here this evening. And here is some of that reaction. Let's us. >> We are weak that people not be able to maintain this encampment, but they are look at the park been the student we ask everybody to please apply pressure on admin yvonne. Them falling that show we are here, that people not to leave, that people love compromise again, people want the palestinian people. >> The demonstrators have now made their way around king's college circle here for a second time. You're having a look at life right now. And lastly, there was an announcement made during these speeches that the sum at this demonstration today are going to begin a hunger strike starting tonight and going to continue with the hunger strike. They say until bows to demands of divesting and disclosing are meant to my the university of I thank you very appreciate that. >> Well, city council is meeting this week in major funding gaps will be the main talking point. Toronto is facing billions of dollars in funding shortfalls and infrastructure, transit, parks and libraries. Councillors are hoping the other levels of government will help find a solution to the money issues facing the city. >> Fall of 10 off to city infrastructure. Categorize as poor and very poor. In terms of the state, they're in. Means that infrastructure is falling apart slowly and require. A replacement renovation rebuilt. We have in fish if a structure gaffe of 26 billion dollars to maintain the current service level over 10 years. >> I think that our our primary focus is really asking the federal government, the provincial government to recognize that toronto is the size of a province. We have more people than half the provinces. So we really do need different revenue tools. So share the tax guys, we need how. We have no choice but to go to the province and to the federal government. We are limited in the revenue tools that we have here in the city of toronto. >> We're also not able to run an operating deficit. So it's important that we continue that advocacy and they're also welcome to grant new revenue tools and the ability to to gather some more money ourselves. >> And councillors will also discuss a motion by brad bradford and jon burnside that would accelerate construction on the gardiner by allowing work to go on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They say that could shave a year off the timeline, which is currently at 3 years and say the city a lot of money. That motion is expected to be tabled tomorrow. >> As someone who previously lived in asia. 24/7 is definitely something that should be normal. We have to find ways obviously to mitigate sound and you know, in japan, they're actually examining using ai to figure out which parts of a bridge need fixing. So I think we need to really examine what's happening in other countries and learn from their best practices. >> Everybody understands the challenges in congestion here in the city of toronto. Costs are economy, 11 billion dollars annually in loss of productivity and perhaps even more important is it's really having an impact on people's quality of life. I see it in facebook groups, people stop talk to me on the street. They're losing hours of their day to congestion in the city and none of that's coordinated. The idea that we're going to tie up a major artery like the gardiner for 3 plus years with no end in sight. That's unacceptable to the past 7 weeks have been horrendous for people. So my motion in front of council at this meeting is to do everything we can to expedite that construction. That includes 24/7 working around the clock to get it done faster. >> And it's a special tribute at city hall today for jaye robinson, who died last week after a long battle with cancer. >> Science to >> A moment of silence was held in memory of a long time. Don valley, west councillor flowers and a framed photo were placed on her spot in the chamber. Her husband and 3 sons were in attendance as robinson's colleagues remember her for dedication and service. Switching gears now, the city has created a new report aimed changing the way homeless encampments are dealt with. Officials are moving away from an enforcement model and are focusing on preventative and supportive measures to get people into permanent housing. City hall has faced pushback from my house people and advocates for clearing cans from parks and public spaces. As toronto's shelter system is at capacity.

>> Town I have written to economic and community development committee with the motion to direct city staff to develop and implement key actions to increase access to safe secure housing and shelter for people who living outdoors respond to the unique housing these of shelter seekers. And I particularly want to highlight recommendation for a pilot program of enhanced multi-sectoral case management support for people living outdoors of those people who have complex mental and physical health needs and that this would be done in partnership with community serving and health care experts. >> The report will go before the city's economic community development committee on may. 29th well for pro-palestinian protesters who are accused of vandalizing a downtown bookstore have had the charges against them dropped 11 people were charged after the indigo at bay and bloor was splattered with red paint last year and posters were put up accusing indigo ceo heather easement of funding genocide. The crown says it withdrawing the charges because there is not a reasonable prospect of conviction. It will proceed with the remaining prosecutions. I didn't lose all employment because of these allegations that were false and proven to be so based on the constitutional and legal frailties in the case against all of the accused. >> It would be my view that in fact, there's no reasonable prospect of conviction in the case as jews, we say calling out companies that support israeli war crimes is a legitimate form of protest. >> Targeting indigo is not antisemitic. >> The remaining 7 accused are charged with hate-motivated offences, including criminal harassment, mischief and conspiracy to commit and indictable offence. It is 7.41 feel like 34 outside. You're watching toronto's breaking news cp24. We come back. The king has grown to this request and we will have a general election on the 4th of july. This election will take place at a time when the world is more dangerous than it's been since the end of the cold. >> Well, part of leader of the labour party, keir starmer says that his party will provide much-needed changes to the country if elected. >> A free reasons why you should change britain with labour. Because we will stop the chaos. Look around country. The sewage in our rivers, people waiting on trolleys in iowa. Crime virtually on polish mortgages and food prices through the roof.
