(Dynamic instrumental music) >> Game changing day today has been declared wnba day in the city after the first canadian team in the league is awarded to toronto. >> At least a dozen cars have been damaged after glass fell on bay street afternoon. It's still close. This is between college in drawer. >> Plus, the union representing 12,000 ttc workers has set a strike date stating the 2 sides remain far apart. We'll tell you when they could walk off the job. >> And toronto city council is meeting for a second day. Councillors are set to discuss a motion to speed up construction on the gardiner. You're watching live at 5. >> Good evening, I'm bakari savage and I'm leena latafat. Thank you for joining us. A portion of bay street is closed due to falling glass. Here's a live look at the scene right now. All lanes are blocked in both directions. This is a debate between college and gerrard do too according to police in cars have been damaged in the area. No one has been hurt. Well, it is official toronto is getting that wnba for details along with reaction to toronto being awarded. Canada's first-ever wnba team. Let's go live to cp24's lindsay. This lindsay. >> Yeah, this is incredibly exciting. Leena and bakari, as you said, the women's basketball team in the wnba outside of the U.S. and it's here in toronto, although we did hear today from the new that this is not going to be just a toronto team. This is going to be canada's team, at least for because this team will be playing in a number of markets around the country, including montreal and vancouver. Think that this is incredibly exciting. This is the 14th for a team out of the franchise out of the wnba franchise. And when think about it, you know, women sports is really starting to gain some we're looking at the pwhl this year in canada. That was a huge success. And now the wnba as I mentioned, larry tanenbaum like group is paying 115 million dollars for this team. And we heard them say today that, quote, the might have heard at this point already saying that it's not just a moment, but it's a movement talking about women sport and how important it is to have equality in sport to have a lot of role models for young that girls and boys who are looking a professional athlete. So this really is a movement. This really has progression. And we've heard so much reaction today from the mayor of toronto the premier from the prime about, you know, what this means for toronto to have this new team. He's more reaction. >> Just this got me thinking, let's look at the data. Let's find a committed ownership group. Let's make sure we have a good reunion player experience. Let's have a preseason game near which coming up the pandemic. We eventually did in 23 little 3 years late, but I saw

excitement in the vibrancy of the city around women's sports and women's basketball. And obviously canada basketball and having canadian players in our league playing at the highest level elite. I'm all all factored into it. But when larry and I met, it was, you know, kind of like that. Jerry maguire, you had me at hello. >> Through thick and through heartbreak and triumph and heartbreak. Torontonians consistently demonstrate their passion, their commitment and their love for professional sports. Toronto is also a diversity welcoming city and a progressive city. So it should come as no surprise that when it hosted the first-ever wnba game in canada a year ago, it sold out and set records for attendance broadcast viewership and merchandise sales. >> Incredibly exciting. The new team will be playing out of the coca cola coliseum at exhibition place. That's 87,000 seats on occasion that he be moved to scotiabank arena will have to look and see the out comment and how many people shot to watch the games. I'm sure it's going to be here, jen. Just before I set about 2, bakari leena also important to note this team does not have a name yet. The owners say they'll take their time looking for one, but they will also have some public input. So a lot to look forward to to that is for sure. Lindsay, the scale reporting live tonight. How exciting thanks, lindsay. And stay with this story. We spoke to katherine maker, host of that pickup, wnba podcast. >> Last like you said, we have this record-breaking game it seems like mlse and rogers arena get in on this. And then they backed out for. Reasons that remain quite a head scratcher to be honest. And you know, larry, 10 bomb who I was like oh, larry tanenbaum such a feminist, but probably just a regular capitalist he's got the opportunity and used his own company to kilmer group to make this happen. And you a lot of it is due to his determination that we're here now. >> Raptors superfan nav bhatia believes that the toronto wnba team, it's going to come. Canada's team similar to rafters f. >> It was, this is hughes and o was a dreaming about this a few years ago. And couple times I did this in, let it go bombs hear about this and I'm so happy and excited that he's making it possible to come toronto in all. And I'm very excited about it. >> And mayor olivia chow has declared today w n b a day in the city of toronto. We'll also happening in the city city council's meeting for a second day. >> They're expected to discuss a motion to speed up construction on the gardiner. And for the very latest, let's go live to cp24's sijia liu, whose inside council chambers. I know it's been a really busy day. Have they started talking about the gardiner yet sijia? >> No, not yet. Leena right now they are discussing an issue around housing in developing a small apartment on major streets. But the gardiner is the big topic on the schedule for later this evening. Councillor brad bradford is expected to present a motion that hopefully speed up the construction of the project. Right now, it's expected to take around 3 years too, rebuild the ciore than 60 year-old so his proposal is for 24/7 construction on the corner to reduce that three-year also save the city money right now, the construction hours are 7:00am to 11:00pm monday to saturday. The current construction has meant a 30% reduction to a capacity to a 700 metre stretch of the gardiner between dufferin and strachan, affecting thousands of commuters every day. But when it comes to around the clock construction, there is concern over the level of noise, especially loud construction noise overnight for the residents living nearby. It's an issue. Mayor olivia chow says they are already discussing with contractors. Here's what councillor brad bradford had to say about his motion earlier we need to be exploring items like 24/7 construction assembly of some of the infrastructure off-site delivery. >> And finally, having a coordinated approach to all of the parallel streets in the downtown that are equally congested and tied up with construction. You're dealing with major construction projects on lakeshore on gardiner, on king street, richmond adelaide queen. And that's why it at such a breaking point right now because there are no alternative routes for people to to use. So they are, they are in the unfortunate position of being stuck in traffic. >> Earlier today, city council approved a motion to allow electric cars on city streets up to 50 kilometres an hour. However, they decided to still keep the ban on e-scooters in the city, although many people have e-scooters councillor diane saxe is one of the few people supported having e-scooters on the streets. Here is what she had to say to so by refusing to regulate them, we're just washing our

hands and not taking any action. Schuette is do need regulation. They have absolutely no place on the sidewalk. >> We need to be doing much more to keep motorized vehicles off the sidewalk. But as we go to the bike lanes, there is a safe place for them to go. And as you heard from cows can especially in the suburbs where some of the by clinton not yet well-used scooters can be one of the one of the uses they help to people. Why are they necessary? >> And as we go from city streets to the expressway, that will be the big topic unite the around the clock construction that is being proposed to speed up construction on the gardiner. And addition to the 24/7 construction city councillors will also be looking at other options like how off-site pre fabricated production could speed things up also the construction on parallel road. So the off-site traffic isn't as bad as it. Leena a busy busy night here in city all right, cp24 see live in council chambers right now. Also the union representing thousands of ttc workers has formally set june 7th as a strike it follows a ruling by ontario's top court, which is upholding the right of transit workers to strike the provincial government appealed a ruling that said a law that eliminated the workers rights to strike was unconstitutional. That appeal was dismissed today atu local 1, 1, 3, represents about 12,000 operators and other frontline staff at the ttc contract talks continue. But the union says they remain far apart on the main issues of job security, wages and benefits. >> Okay, it's time for an update on traffic at 509. This is during rush hours. 25 degrees out there had to wait and see of law. >> How hot are the you pumped and heated up. They are, you know, no fires, but they're heated up in terms of. >> You're not moving see might be sweating in your car. And we have these major problems. We'll start with a situation that is impacting bay street, all because of a falling glass coming off of a building. They shut down in either direction between college and gerrard for the situation. This is a major artery for drivers that use intel city streets to make their way home at the live in the downtown core. But that's a massive stretch to be closed during rush hour. If you're looking for an alternative, maybe use yonge street or you can use on mount pleasant just to get yourself through or church federal turn is obviously this stretch of a is closed. I'm going to show you my cameras were we obviously have problems. It is rush hour into scarborough eastbound 401 in the collectors on the approach to market road. It is a collision. It does have the 2 left lanes occupied in the slowdowns extend from well before dixie westbound on the 401 looks like it's in the express. It isn't a stalled transport truck, a blocking the right lane and shoulder past bayview and still eyeballing ongoing issues. All the westbound gardiner. It is this a stalled truck. It's still there and it does have right. Lane blocked. Bakari leena. I'll send it back to you. >> This cp24 traffic report is brought to you by 407 etr. Enjoy the journey with a stress free commute. >> Also making news tonight, a man in his 40's is dead after a double shooting outside a school in mississauga. Shots were fired in the parking lot of settlers. Green public school on montevideo road. That's near winston churchill boulevard in battleford road just after 11 o'clock last night, the 2 victims were taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, where one later died. Police say the victim in hospital is a male under the age of 20, who remains in critical condition. >> The way the call came in and informed us that there was some form of gathering here at the lot size on the east side of the school. The nature of that gathering is is unknown at this time. But there was some sort of altercation that that occurred between the 2 victims and either a suspect or suspects. The number right now were unclear. >> We were like maybe a kilometre or 2 away. And then we we heard like a lot of sirens like police sirens and then I thought we heard like like some sort of like pop or like some sound, but it might have been just like a car screeching. And then it was around like 10 48 11. So yeah. So that I don't know how much that will help power. >> Investigators say they don't have any suspect information yet, but several vehicles fled the area and some witnesses have come forward. >> And we are asking for help identifying a suspect in an alleged sexual assault at union station. Investigators have released these security camera images. This is the man looking for and police allege the woman was sexually assaulted. I eastbound go train and the station last friday, the suspect was last seen going north. I'm basically he's described as being 20 to 30 years old, 5 foot 10 with a slim build. He was wearing dark clothing, a baseball hat and carrying a skateboard. Anyone with information asked to call police or crime stoppers.

>> Gta police services have launched a campaign to combat street racing project to race, which stands for limiting eliminating racing activity on streets everywhere kicked off at exhibition place today. Police from toronto, york peel halton hamilton as well as the opp were in attendance are coming together for this campaign because they say street racing has no jurisdictional boundaries. >> Since this time last year, we have seen a 31% increase in calls for service relating to stunt driving. These numbers are alarming and they are unacceptable. Last summer, the toronto police service lead project joint forces operation in partnership with the opp. >> Peel york and durham regional police services. Project bread. That was a huge success relating in 143 arrests. 135 spent writing and 90 criminal code dangerous driving charges. >> The reality is and street racing. And dangerous driving is illegal and it has no place on our roadways or highways or our parking lots. Recently, york regional police and other gta police services have been dealing with an increase of organized groups of drivers gathering in large numbers for car meets and when some instances they engage in illegal activities, hazardous actions such as racing, drifting and burnouts. >> So police really cracking down on this stunt driving and street racing carry possible fines of up to $10,000 as well as a 30 day license suspension at roadside at a 14 day vehicle impoundment to a warm fire. This is at a plaza in scarborough. It happened this afternoon.
