A second person is critically injured. At trial city council meeting for a second day. Gridlock on the gardner on the agenda. 4:30 25 degrees from 299 queen street west. You're watching toronto's breaking news cp24. Good afternoon. I'm phil perkins. Thanks for joining us. Our top story day to a council meetings taking place right now at city hall with the gardener rehab project at the forefront. Cp24's sijia liu is live at toronto city hall with the latest I feel we're still waiting on city councillors to get to the big topic of the day, which is the gardiner expressway project and how to speed up construction right now. The project is expected to take about 3 years. And there's been a public outcry over the timeline. Now later this afternoon, councillor brad bradford will be presenting a motion that looks at solutions to speed up the project, including exploring 24/7 construction to reduce the timeline right now, the construction hours on the expressway are 7:00am to 11:00pm monday to saturday. >> The current construction has meant a 30% reduction to the capacity. The carter stretch between dufferin and strachan affecting thousands of commuters each day. There is concern over around the clock construction in the construction noise for residents living nearby. There are a lot of condos nearby. It's an issue. Mayor olivia chow says they are already discussing with the contractors. Here's what brant brantford had to say about his motion earlier today. >> The experience on the gardiner right now is an absolute horror show. It's choking our economy, it's killing our small business and it is ruining quality of life for residents here in toronto. The idea that the administration thinks this type of catastrophic delays acceptable for 3 years is that is not on. So the motion that I'm presenting today are a number of key steps to speed up the construction, minimize the impact and get torontonians moving again faster. >> Well, switching gears for a second from the gardener to city streets earlier today, city councillors voted to allow electric cars on city

streets up to speed to 50 kilometres an hour. However, they kept the ban on scooters in play. City staff admitted there was little police enforcement when it comes to the e-scooter ban. Toronto centre councillor chris moise says e-scooters are already here in the city and the city needs to catch up. The I would is toronto and I see e-scooters all the time everywhere we have young a teenager who's writing them. I've seen seniors old as 75 right at them. >> You're not going away anytime soon. And for the mayor of fact, because of a liability reasons, we choose not make them legal. I think it's kind of ridiculous is here to stay. As for this afternoon inside council chambers. We're still awaiting the debate over the gardiner expressway project and around the clock construction. So phil, we'll keep you updated once council gets I thanks so much. Appreciate the update. >> Well, toronto has been awarded the wnba first franchise outside the united states for the expansion team set to start playing in 2026 cp24 tons of scares live downtown with the latest lindsay. >> Yes, so this is such a big day for not only toronto, but really canada, when you think about it, because this is going to be canada's women's basketball team for the time being. And it's really when you think about it on a bigger scale. This is about empowering women. This is about empowering women in and bring equality to support something that we obviously have made progress and especially over the last couple of years, especially here in toronto and in canada. But we also have a long way to go still. So this larry tanenbaum like group is paying 115 million dollars for this team. And as I said, I'll be the nba's 14th franchise team. That's an exciting start. We've had so much reaction today from the mayor of toronto from the premier and even the prime minister about this new wnba canadian team. What it means for canada, what it means for the city of toronto. Here's more. Have a listen. >> Wnba team, those sports hero is going to mean a whole lot. >> To a whole lot of teenage kids, especially ones that are not so sure. You know, when you're going up. >> That is the power of sports sports have to you need power to draw us together to unite U.S. >> 2 blurred divisions and build bridges across all the different communities that call toronto home. >> All united in the common love. Michael jordan, kobe bryant, demar derozan, kyle lowry who was with us here today jamal murray and sga. >> But these young women never saw someone like themselves on the stage playing the sport they love. >> The wnba has changed all that. And today we're changing that here in canada. >> This team will start playing fell and 2026, they'll start playing at the coca cola coliseum at exhibition place. And then on occasion, a potentially move out to scotiabank arena. Also important to note fell before as back to you, that there's no need, no name yet for this team. Saw the team starts be names pretty just seeing this all starting. But still, we've got a little ways to go until 2026, back to alright way for the name speculations to begin. Thank you.
