This is toronto's breaking news cp24 good afternoon and thank you for joining us. And leena latafat, it is official toronto is getting a wnba team. Kilmer sports ventures led by mlse chair larry tanenbaum has been awarded the team, which will join the league in 2026. The franchise will be the 14th in the wnba after the expansion. Golden state valkyrie start playing next year. Toronto's yet to be named team will play out of coca-cola coliseum at exhibition place. It's the first franchise outside the U.S. and is expected to play some games in vancouver and

montreal. >> And just got me thinking, let's look at the data. Let's find a committed ownership group. Let's make sure we have a good reunion player experience. Let's have a preseason game near which coming up the pandemic. We eventually did in 23 little 3 years late, but I saw excitement in the vibrancy of the city around women's sports and women's basketball. And obviously canada basketball and having canadian players in our league playing at the highest level elite. I'm all all factored into it. But when larry and I met, it was, you know, kind of like that. Jerry maguire, you had me at hello. >> For years, young girls in basketball being inspired by some of the nba greats. Michael jordan, kobe bryant, demar derozan, kyle lowry who was with us here today tell. >> Jamal murray and sga. >> But these young women never saw someone like themselves on the big brightest stage playing the sport they love. The wnba has changed all that. And today we're changing that here in canada. >> Through thick and through heartbreak and triumph and heartbreak. Torontonians consistently demonstrate their passion, their commitment and their love for professional sports. Toronto is also a diversity, a welcoming city and a progressive city. So it should come as no surprise that when it hosted the first-ever wnba game in canada a year ago. It's sold out and set records for attendance. Broadcast viewership and merchandise sales. >> Just imagine growing up here in toronto and then playing for for toronto team. It's a what a dream that would be an you know, commissioner, thank you for everything you're you brought this to a whole different level. >> And that's telling the commissioner about the diversity of our of our province. >> 110 national these think of that over 200 languages being spoken and this is going to be truly not just a toronto team. As larry, you're saying it's going to be the canadian team. >> Wnba team. >> Those sports hero is going to mean a whole lot to a whole lot of teenage kids, especially ones that are not so sure. You know, when you're going up. >> That is the power of sports sports have to you need power to draw us together to unite U.S. >> 2 blurred divisions and build bridges across all the different communities that call toronto home. All united in the common love. Off our city, our province and our country. >> Yes, this an historic moment in toronto sports. >> And cigna, exciting time for women's sports, ontario tourism culture and sport minister neil lumsden says having a wnba team in toronto will help inspire athletes all over the province. >> These are high performance athletes across the best. >> In the globe coming to play in the wnba and we're going to be right here in toronto. So young people that aspire to go to the next level. The inspiration doesn't just isn't about just to go perf play professional basketball, it's to get better because somebody else has got better and they've done it and they see themselves where they get their not isn't necessarily the point. It's inspiring about young athletes is the impact is going to have. >> And we caught up with catherine eicher, host of the pickup, a wnba podcast who joins us live at noon. >> Huge, I mean everything from merchandise to but also you have, like you do the equivalent of what the raptors effect has been right? Like you you know, the raptors have been around for over 25 years. We have a whole generation of kids that grown up with that teen. Now we have like a really strong olympic team that's going to be, you know, going for a medal this summer. And you know, that was, you know, it's bit of a pipe dream. 25 years ago, right? So you know, here we are. And I think like that was huge for different kinds of community growth, not just in toronto, but across canada. And I think this is going to have a very similar impact. >> And raptors superfan nav bhatia believes the toronto wnba team will become canada's team similar to how the raptors have. >> It's like the raptors. The raptors was the first team for from america and a little clothing from from in new team. And 25 years we were the champions and I'm so excited and thankful to let it go in a moment. Everybody who's in morden this larry is going to

do everything to make of the wnba team. It mp in his shoulder while than we did with the bent state. >> Live to nathan phillips square now, where mayor olivia chow is speaking about newcomer day. Let's listen team right here in toronto. Always exciting. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> The fall I start, you know what we need to do it. There are all these people have white t-shirts over there, right? They say volunteer that. Do you know that all fall work at the scene of toronto, they of volunteering and they've been volunteering all these years to make sure that we gathered here today to newcomer day. So can we put our heads together to thank 167 volunteer. >> Putting event together. Thank you so much. >> They work during the day and then they volunteer. Yes, my story is not that different than many of yours. My parents came to canada, came to toronto because they want a life for their dog or me. But I was 13. >> We came here. >> For the opportunities, but it difficult. My dad who spoke fluent english and got gala set to visit teach a certificate to teach todd was a school superintendent in hong call. And guess what? He came at a time they didn't need a lot of teachers, so he never became a teacher. It was very difficult supply, taught for a while he'd write, try driving taxis. This is before the gps days. And he was always getting lost. So that been worked out the try delivering chinese food that didn't work out. And it really, really difficult. And my mom, thank god and and rather than being a teacher, he went and worked in the hotel as a maid and raced to me. But even with that kind of data back right? We were okay because we were living in james town and the apartment was affordable. And that's what we need. We need to build a lot more housing, affordable housing. So newcomers can find a new poll. Do you agree? Yeah, that is important. Yes, so here I am. You cover for many years ago now as your mayor of this great city and your journey to canada, it's just the beginning. In in the, in the last 10 years, newcomers day has evolved into one of the city's largest celebration for newcomers. And in fact, in the last 2 years, more than 10,000 people have attended every year. So look around you, even the sun. Came out and say, yeah, you let's make it a warm day and what we need to do is harness your energy, your optimism. Allen's passion to serve. Let work together. As I said, 2 bill maher housing. Provide better tron sense and make this city a much more caring place, a safer place where everyone feels safe. The law. And if you have any suggestions on what we can do for newcomers, whether to help you start new businesses to provide more support. Me know. Let us know. Hey, and I just want to also lastly, take a moment to thank our sponsor. The shot financial group which is over there. Metrolinx new canadians, tv, rogers communication, greater toronto airports authority. Tim hortons, of course, we could not have done it without your help. And next time you see a volunteer. So those t-shirts on say thank you to them personally. So welcome everyone to new covered day at 6. All welcome to toronto. And welcome home. And this weekend, if you a free live open doors, which means you can come in and check out my office. Check out mel lastman's to square that's tons of activities this weekend for you because we are opening the door. So the civic place that you might be interested in. So welcome to

toronto and welcome home. Enjoy the rest of the day. We've been listening to toronto's mayor olivia she's got one more thing to say. Let's see if we okay. >> We're going to more about that later, but that was mayor olivia chow speaking about newcomer day, the city marking its 10th annual newcomer day in toronto, festivities taking place at nathan phillips square and services being offered to people who are new to the city as well. We'll have more on that throughout the day. In other news, a man in his 40's is dead after a double shooting outside a mississauga school. Shots were fired in the parking lot of settlers. Green public school on montevideo road near winston churchill boulevard and battleford road, just after 11 o'clock last night, the 2 victims were taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, where one later died. Police say the victim in hospital is a male under the age of 20, who remains in critical condition. >> We're not sure at the time right now at present that the vehicles on how they are related to the investigation. That is something that will be certain to to update. And we're looking into right now at the time, it was a it was pretty populated in the evening varying reports of anywhere from 10 to 20 people gathered in that lot for what reasons we don't know yet the time of the shooting. There are reports of vehicles leaving the area but it's unfortunately, it's too early to tell what moments whether those witnesses or suspects or just individuals fleeing the sound of gunfire. >> Well, it's crazy. Like I never thought this area would because we moved to because it's like a really safe, like nice part of mississauga. So it's like a really scary. >> Investigators say they don't have any suspect information yet, but several vehicles fled the area and some witnesses have come forward police are asking for help identifying a suspect in an alleged assault at union station. Investigators have released the security camera images of the man they're looking for. Police allege a woman was sexually assaulted on an eastbound go train in the station last friday. The suspect was last seen going north on bay street. He is described as 20 to 30 years old, 5 foot 10 with a slim build. He was wearing dark clothing, a baseball hat and carrying a skateboard. Anybody with information is asked to get in touch. Gta. Police services have launched a campaign to combat street racing project erase, which stands for eliminate racing activity on streets everywhere kicked off at exhibition place this morning. Police from toronto york peel halton hamilton and the opp were in attendance coming together for this campaign because they say street racing has no jurisdictional boundaries. >> It's crucial for people to understand the risk associated with illegal street racing and the potential consequences not only for themselves, but for other users of our roads. We want to emphasize the importance of keeping racing activities confined to legal race trucks. This is essential for public safety. We want encourage the public and empower communities to report dangerous driving and illegal racing activity. >> These drivers have organized themselves and advertising meets on social media, routinely encouraging followers to attend. The stunts are often performed in front of groups of onlookers stand far too close to the dangerous activities that are taking place just to try to capture the next viral video for social media. They're placing themselves in harm's way and they're risking serious injury or worse. >> And stunt driving and street racing carry possible fines of up to $100,000 as well as a 30 day license suspension at roadside and a 14 day vehicle. Impoundment toronto city councillors back at it today, looking at a number of items still on the agenda. City councillors voted to allow small electric cars with a maximum speed of 50 kilometres an hour on streets. E-scooters remain banned, although it is legal to own them in toronto. City staff also admitted there's little police enforcement of the e-scooter ban. >> I think council is not really taking the issue seriously because people are being harmed not providing rules in place, putting rules in place. I've seen people ride the scooters on the sidewalk, right? I've seen them write all the subways. For example, we saw what happened with the fires is no direction from the city as to what is what is is not being enforced by the police. Don't have the capacity to actually enforce the rules. >> I really hope the federal government does create standards. They should, but

there is no sign that they're about to do and in the meantime, it's good. He's are all over roads. And as I say, the evidence we got was at this 40 to 50,000 in the city already and growing rapidly. So. It would be better if the federal government took action. It would be better if the provincial government took more action. But the fact is, they're not. And here we are in the city, this kid is everywhere and we're not doing anything to regulate. >> We're going to pivot now and take you live to the white house where U.S. president joe biden is speaking alongside the president of kenya. Let's listen in. >> Doing the heavy lifting in a cup of region's somalia. South sudan, the democratic republic of the congo. Washington, as mentioned, could lead millions of for the course in haiti. Isn't it ironic that wait a minute ending its part of the wars in venice and the latest in and leadership when beautiful couple. And that come that he can one of the horton was full 1000 kilometres away from a doping. I mean, why that is people, got to me when in the your foot in the was it was was different from that encampment and it's reason why. Afghanistan, known as the graveyard of empires. >> Likely anybody uniting. Afghanistan highly, highly, highly unlikely. Number 2, weight control isis other then occupying afghanistan. It was unnecessary me. Now regard to haiti is in a very of the all of them. There's a lot going on in hemisphere and we're in a situation where we want to do all we can without looking like america once again. Stepping over the sign. This is what must be done. Patients are looking for help as well. Spoke to the caribbean. And so check down a number of other countries, one of stepped up as haiti we've committed with all the intelligence and so it's a lot things. You have first cut could capability you keep your work. Important. I >> I agree president biden. Can a 40 per tonne in haiti. It's not so much. About what happened in the half. We believe in. The peace and security human. We don't find that the U.S. it's coming can can. Because the u.s., I'm not coming, I'm the president of kenya me to make that decision. And if people of kenya me that on using data on structure. We've gone through the port of 15 can. Now parliament approved. We have pm monday, we pm from walk. >> And it people can make division. In the interest. Well, topping peace and stability. I thought it the moment global to do and and the funding. In security instability anyway. In security. And instability. By the way. About plight. We want to really anywhere >> Kind of we're congress. You know, can help relieve suffering. The united states largest humanitarian provide 275 million humanitarian funding this year, who worth more than 6 million displaced people years. So we're in more than one full of my present. >> You said that to kenya's committed and that in the u a. Cut his fiction. Love that. You said its business from an italian is helping haiti but can you explain the your political goal for 1000 kilometres away from nato? Be when's close in the coming to south, but inglewood full court and to kind of help from the get up. And because of the been to problem. If you committing on national police force to haiti and with the priority it's been one of young made the money just a few less talking about security and today in the evening.
