So at this press conference today with

the prime minister. The mayor, larry tanenbaum, who is a minority or with the toronto maple leafs. He's going to be the majority order in this new franchise. And the commissioner of the n w nba, they all made remarks with regards to this exciting announcement. And the commissioner said that one of the reasons why was chosen as the next wnba city was because of diversity and their love for basketball. She mentioned a game that took place here at scotiabank arena last year and it was sold out in less than 20 minutes. And I spoke to larry tanenbaum after that press conference as well. And that he said that that was one of the things that got him very excited about the possibility of bringing a women's national basketball, a team to toronto with the fact that there's such great interest and need for that sport here in a diversity here's more from the commissioner from the wnba and from larry tanenbaum as well. They were 2 of the people that spoke today at the >> We know toronto is a basketball city, I know for others. Hockey fans were in the middle of the stanley cup playoffs here. We've seen time and time again that toronto is home to dedicated and enthusiastic basketball fans never forget last year at scotiabank arena, I attended our toronto game lots of people coming up to me and saying thank you for making my dreams come true. >> By bringing a wnba game here, that's when I knew. This is the right place as we're thinking about expansion. >> Our team will complete the pathway for women in this country. >> They will see heroes that look like them in person and on the air all summer long. >> Gain inspiration from asia. Wilson, diana taurasi, breanna stewart and kia nurse. They can see that the sport they play as girls. And as women, it's just as important and worth investing in. Because the more we all recognize value and potential of women's sports. The closer we get to a more equitable future in the world of sports. >> The team will play their home games at of coca-cola coliseum, that seats just under 9,000 people. >> All right, steve ryan reporting live. Thanks so much. Steve. >> And ontario tourism culture and sport minister neil lumsden spoke to cp24 about what having a wnba team in toronto will mean for the city and the province. >> I refer to as high performance sport because that's exactly what these the who these women high performance athletes playing professional basketball. And so what it means to the community is the impact it will have bringing people into town for overnights coming to games. The draw has been incredible. We've seen in hockey, the pwhl, we're going to see it in basketball and they're already seeing the united states and having talked to some people, the league is thrilled to be coming to toronto. They just they know the curtain is getting pulled back and it's going to be a huge hit. >> Raptors superfan nav bhatia believes the toronto wnba team will become canada's team similar to how the raptors have. >> He always does, is use and I was a dreaming about this a few years ago. And couple times I did this in levied bombs hear about this. And I'm so happy and excited that he's making it possible to come toronto in all. And I'm very excited about it. >> It's an exciting time. Mayor chow has declared today wnba day in the city of toronto is 105. Now 24 degrees, let's get an early look at the roads this afternoon with traffic specialist adwoa nsiah-yeboah. Good afternoon good afternoon. Lee. Not yet has not been an easy drive on the gardiner, as you know, for the past couple of weeks, because the long-term roadwork. But then add to that we do toronto transportation on sunday check the camera behind. They are still a blocking the right lane and just outside of camera view, it is garbage a pickup crude the picking up garbage in the right lane to the making their very slowly out of the downtown core. As you know, long-term roadwork continues. So it's pretty busy, both east and westbound as you try to make your way out of the downtown core. Also a busy go on the southbound 4 for dvp starting from south of sheppard, all the way down to richmond. It's been like this since just about 11 o'clock. That's because in the left lane, but outside of camera view, we're dealing with emergency roadwork, that is in the left lane. >> Some good news, though, with your travel to take you on the eastbound 4, 1, in the express at mcallen. But collision that did have the 2 left lanes blocked, cleared side camera view in scarborough, crews on scene of a collision on steeles steeles is closed between kennedy and silver star. I'll send it back to thank you. Also making news, a man in his 40's is dead after a double shooting outside a school in mississauga. Shots were fired in the parking lot of settlers. Green public school. >> On montevideo road near winston churchill boulevard and battle for road just after 11 o'clock last night, the 2 victims were taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, where one later died. Police say the victim in hospital is a male under the age of 20,

who remains in critical condition. >> The way to call came in and informed us that there was some form of gathering here at the lot sides on the east side of the school. The nature of that gathering is is unknown at this time. But there was some sort of altercation that that occurred between the 2 victims and either a suspect or suspects. The number right now were unclear. >> We were like maybe a kilometre to wait. And then we we heard like a lot of sirens like police sirens and then I thought we heard like like some sort of like pop or like some sound, but it might have been just like a car screeching. And then it was around like 10 48 11. So so that I don't know how much that will help power. >> Investigators say they don't have any suspect information yet, but several vehicles fled the area and some witnesses have come forward. Police are asking for help identifying a suspect in an alleged assault at union station. Investigators have released the security camera images of the man they're looking for. Police allege a woman was sexually assaulted on an eastbound go train in the station last friday. The suspect was last seen going north on bay street. Police services have launched a campaign to combat street racing project race, which stands for eliminate racing activity on streets everywhere kicked off at exhibition place this morning. Police from toronto, york peel halton hamilton and opp were in attendance coming together for this campaign because they say street racing has no jurisdictional boundaries. Since this time last year, we have seen a 31% increase in calls for service relating to stunt driving. >> These numbers are alarming and they are unacceptable. Last summer, the toronto police service lead project burnout, a joint forces operation in partnership with the opp. >> Peel york and durham regional police services. Project bread. That was a huge success relating in 143 arrests. 135 stunt driving and 90 criminal code dangerous driving charges. >> The reality is and street racing. And dangerous driving is illegal and it has no place on our roadways or highways or our parking lots. City councillors voted to allow small electric cars with a maximum speed of 50 kilometres an hour on streets. E-scooters remain banned, although it is legal to own them in toronto. City staff also admitted there was little police enforcement of e-scooter ban. >> My ward is toronto and I see e-scooters all the time everywhere we have young a teenager who's writing them. I've seen seniors old as 75 right at them. You're not going away anytime soon. And for the american fact, because of a liability reasons, we choose not make them legal. I think it's kind of ridiculous is here to stay. >> So by refusing to regulate them, we're just washing our hands and not taking any action. >> Schuette do need regulation. They have absolutely no place on the sidewalk. We need to be doing much more to keep motorized vehicles off the sidewalk. But as you go to the bike lanes, there is a safe place for them to go. And as you heard from cows can especially in the suburbs where some of the bike lanes in not yet well-used scooters can be one of the one of the uses they help to people. Why are they necessary? >> And councillor brad bradford will be presenting a motion this afternoon to make sure the city does all it can to speed up construction on the gardner. >> The experience on the gardiner right now is an absolute horror show. It's choking our economy, it's killing our small business and it is ruining quality of life for residents here in toronto. The idea that the administration thinks this type of catastrophic delays acceptable for 3 years is that

is not on. So the motion that I'm presenting today are a number of key steps to speed up the construction, minimize the impact and get torontonians moving again faster. >> The timeline for rehab work on the aging expressway is 3 years. City staff are already looking at options to speed it up. This is their community is right in the heart. All foreign cliff, everything's integrated. All the sectors collaborating each other, saying that we are stronger together >> This base model is exactly the kind of thing that is needed at this time. But you know, as a public health physician, I actually talk about health health care is important. It's a crucial element of of health. But even more important is the nature of the spirit that you see here that actually created this health is about community, it's about partnership, it's about working together and making sure that we all have the opportunity to reach our full potential. >> When we work in collaboration with our community, we can be so much closer. It's huge to population needs and deliver care conveniently for them by providers who are best able to provide that care.
