CITY24 - Thursday, May 23, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. (ET) - Segment #21

outsource on television so I smile every time these next generation of kids come in and the rookie class comes in and they've grown up with the wnba are role models are super, cheryl swoops, because they grow up watching the w so I'm really excited for the future thanks to kathy who continues and her team who continues to push the w forward these girls are role models or no. >> I have to imagine, kathy, when you're crossing borders for the first time and entering in this international platform, why toronto? What was it for you about toronto that made this that you need this to happen is the next expansion franchise? >> Stacey, we had done a huge analysis, I'm a big data person. We did the huge analysis back in 2020 pre-pandemic believe it or not and we were looking at toronto. We were about to announce a preseason game back in early 2020 literally the weeks that the nba essentially shut down the sports world because of the pandemic. From that moment on we knew the diversity of the city, we knew that we wanted to bring a team north. We wanted to expand globally, we wanted a global platform, a new fan base, avid fan base. When I first -- I wasn't even the commissioner yet but I was named it I went to game 6,000 golden state and I just saw the passion the toronto fans even out-of-the-way game and obviously winning the championship that year it got me thinking let's look at the data, let's find a committed ownership group, let's make sure we have a good arena and player experience, let's have a preseason game here which coming at the pandemic we eventually did in 23, three years late but I saw the excitement and the vibrancy of city where women's sports and basketball and obviously canadian basketball and canadian players are league playing at the highest level all factored into it but when larry and I met, it was, you know, kind of like that jerry maguire you had me at hello. I said, you know, there's no one more dedicated to building women's sports I think in the city in this country than larry and judy. >> Simply the infrastructure is fantastic here for toronto as you alluded to. Teresa. (applause) tell us a little bit, teresa, about the plans for this new team and the innovative mindset with you specifically as president. >> Everyone wants to hear the details? I'm your woman. I get to call the shots. So we heard a lot of already. This isn't just toronto's team this is canada's team and we are so excited for girls and women of canada and the people that love and support them to love and support us. We are going to play across canada in different markets. We look forward to doing that in a way that no other professional sports team in canada has ever done. These games are going to matter and we can't wait to see their. Coca-cola will be our home base we are going to have a fan section just like a soccer team and the rise better be loud and I cannot wait to rock that so that's how we are going to play and we're going to be ever. >> Teresa I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the years you spent with our nba are incredible nba talent and just the partnership and what that looks like in the energy you are able to draw from that group as we welcome a team in 2026. >> Oh, yes, it sets the stage kathy mentioned game six kyle you might remember this I'm going to say there is five to set 12,000 people in the arena afterwards yelling and chanting with the north -- this is on an away trip in america. When we get to go across coast to coast to coast in canada and play these games it's going to be incredible and we can't wait to see everyone around the country really show up. >> Tammy you played overseas 12 years that's calls an incredible veteran careers a couple source in there. What for you in terms of this team is -- how can fans show up? You seen everything from europe to asia to the rest. What do we need to see here? >> Honestly I don't think I would've played 12 years if there wasn't the support I had in the w and internationally. I think for players the fans are the six player. There about six man so we feed off that energy so fans are incredibly important. How fans can show up -- buy season tickets. Where your favourite players jerseys to games follow your players in social media I think this tons of ways for fans across canada show up for the players. Players will say they know, they really do. They seal the messages in all the love and support and I think that's really important in a

toughly makes a difference. >> Awesome. I'm just curious just from your standpoint we are hearing this caitlin clark have you guys heard of her we are hearing about this weight -- you know very well has been in existence 427 years. We have a lot of incredible hall of famers, legends like tammy. I played five years so I'm just curious from your standpoint how this wave of players now impacts what we've already built as a sisterhood? >> I think having role models will be a huge impact on the next generation of young athletes. It's one thing to watch a game on tv but to see game live in person there something really special about that. To something really special about meeting her favourite player, getting an autograph, taking a picture. So you hear time and time again athletes say when they are younger them at their favourite player on there came inspire them to where they are now sore think there will be a huge impact this team in toronto will make a difference I think adding a few other cities as well over the next few years will open up additional roster spots. Right now we have four canadians in the w. Hopefully in the next few years you will double that number. >> Yes teresa I'm curious from you how can canadian support this new team that's a couple years away? >> To your sicko I think excitement and enthusiasm that will garners going to be incredible so number 1 the first question I've been asked in the last hour I've been appointed president, everything a person has said what what is a team name" to be. We don't know. It's a clean slate. Your looking forward to sourcing information and suggestions from the canadian public. So keep an eye out for the new -- near future. Tammy touch on a lot of it. Nothing speaks louder than how people spend their time, energy and money. Suspended in ways that support this team. Buy a ticket, watch games. If you are a decision-maker, data from canadian women the seven runs is the most the jays have scored in an inning all season, leading them to a 9-2 win two out of every three canadians are fans of women sports. Invest in it. And then when you were a fan look at who's investing in this team and support them. If the whole flywheel and we can really get a turn in if we make the right decisions are really looking forward to really growing this team and setting a new level of investment and support of the wnba has never seen. >> Kathy we are going to see the golden state next and then the ruby toronto. That'll be 14 teens, which is awesome. The goal I believe -- >> 16. Cutting the 16. >> So we have olympics down the states in the same time frame. What advice do you have? You have been a part of expansions obviously these are huge undertakings. We are sitting appear kind of speaking casually in some respects about it but these are deep meetings and take a long time. It was perspective on that. >> Yes when I first joined the league and I saw that we were the longest tenured women professional sports league in north america by the way by double it any other. A lot of leak started and folded in sorted and folded in hockey, soccer and even basketball. So we take that with great responsibility. And as I looked around some major cities that are media markets, have a lot of corporate, fortune 500 companies base their exit how could really be in 12 cities? As I started to talk to corporate partners this it would be great if you could be in toronto in the bay area. So again retaken with great responsibility to expand. We need as tammy just said the number roster spots hundred and 44 today roster spots are available. We are going to expand that with the four teams were going to add by 48 that's a 30 percent increase. So that's going to give a lot of opportunity to a lot of young women whether they come out of college or not we have obviously an international program as well and it will inspire hopefully millions of other girls to pick up a basketball. One thing you mentioned caitlin clark this whole working class and attention on the wnba and women's basketball I can't tell you how many people are now coming up to me in arenas and saying my 10-year-old daughter, eight role daughter saw sabrina and stephanie nba all-star game and he started to pick up a to grow because the more you grow, the more opportunities you give the more again. It's, it's just a a huge inspiration to so many of these players, quality of the play on the court 10. >> Have you seen this? I

haven't, almost want get it doubles coming it. The growth has been incredible. As I said, you know, cathie, you come on corning, you've done a great job. Your team's going done a great job pushing the game I think the players coming in are now bringing their fan base with them to and so. >> We have eyeballs get more eyeballs and hopefully that just continues to grow. >> What's it going to look like from any I would been awarded the team, which is going to join the league in 2026. This franchise will be the 14th in the wnba after the expansion into golden state. That's going to start playing next year. Toronto's has yet to be named team will be playing out of coca cola coliseum at exhibition place. In fact, the new team president just said they're open to some suggestions from the public on that is the very first franchise outside of the U.S. and is expected to play games in vancouver as well as montreal, both teams. There's team will start play in our 2026 season and we're just at such a pivotal pivotal moment. It for our league >> We have set viewership records sell out selling out season tickets growing the game and adding 14th team particularly significant milestone in the ongoing growth of of the league. So this has been a major goal of mine. Certainly since I joined the league a few years ago. I'm here with my team who made this all and we know as we looked at the data around toronto, be a remarkably diversity and vibrant city. And we're so proud that the wnba is now part of this open and welcoming community. >> For years, young girls in basketball have been inspired by some of the nba greats. Michael jordan, kobe bryant, demar derozan, kyle lowry who was with us here today to >> Jamal murray and sga. >> But these young women never saw someone like themselves on the stage, playing the sport they love. The wnba has changed all that. And today we're changing that here in canada. >> Through thick and thin through heartbreak and triumph and heartbreak. Torontonians consistently demonstrate their passion, their commitment and their love for professional sports. Toronto is also a diversity, a welcoming city and a progressive city. So it should come as no surprise that when it hosted the first-ever wnba game in canada a year ago. It's sold out and set records for attendance. Broadcast viewership and merchandise sales. >> Wnba team. >> Those sports hero, it's going to mean a whole lot to a whole lot of teenage kids, especially ones that are not so sure. You know, when you're going up. >> That is the power of sports sports have to you need power to draw us together to unite U.S. >> 2 blurred divisions and build bridges across all the different communities that call toronto home. >> All united in the common love. Off our city, our province and our country. Yes, this an historic moment in toronto sports. >> Very historic. The mayor has also declared today a wnba day here for the city of toronto. A developing story there. Let's switch gears. We're going to talk about the traffic story will bring in lisa. He's keeping an eye on the roads. Lisa has a looking at their, you know, still pretty busy court. It has been a very busy thursday morning commute. The crews just clear problem east 401 collector him to the 404 dvp. >> And now we have our eyes on some new problems. This is westbound 401 in the collectors just past the 404 dvp looks like at least one right lane is affected. It's low through here. Anyway. South 404 don valley parkway, really slow all the way down towards the gardiner have been checking the cameras. We haven't heard of any live lane issues, but there is a road caron, the north on valley parkway. This is north of the gardiner. The left lane is affected. Also just came across a road crew. This is east gardner just adding that towards the kipling stretch in the right lane. If you're heading out to ttc line one right now, there's no service between st. Clair and bloor yonge because of a fire investigation. Shuttle buses will get you around. I'll send it back to court. Thank you, welcome. >> Agt. Man in his 40's is dead after a double shooting outside of a mississauga school. Shots were fired in the parking lot of settlers. Green public school along

montevideo road. That's near winston churchill boulevard and battleford road, just after 11 last night, the 2 victims were taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, where one later died. Police say the victim in hospital is a male under the age of 20, who remains in critical condition. >> The way to call came in and informed us that there was some form of gathering here at the lot sides on the east side of the school. The nature of that gathering is is unknown at this time. But there was some sort of altercation that that occurred between the 2 victims and either a suspect or suspects. The number right now were unclear. >> We were like maybe a kilometre or 2 away. And then we we heard like a lot of sirens like police sirens and then I thought we heard like like some sort of like pop or like some sound, but it might have been just like a car screeching. And then it was around like 10 48 11. So yeah. So that I don't know how much that will help power. >> And investigators say they don't have any suspect information yet, but several vehicles fled the area and some witnesses have come forward. Police in hamilton say they're looking for the public's help after a number of shootings in that city more than doubled over the past year. Among some of the cases a day like gunfight. That happened just moments after kids walks through the scene. Ctv's sean leathong has the details. >> There have been brazen daylight shootings, buildings indiscriminately shot under cover of darkness and several suspects at large. Hamilton is experiencing a steep increase in gun violence. That this point we're running a record a record pace. >> In 2024, there have been 22 shootings more than double last year and on pace to beat their record year in 2019. The most recent just this past weekend, 3 suspects seen fleeing after shooting at apartment building in many of the shootings. Police say they're encountering big obstacles. Their too many instances of refusal to help us. So they're appealing to the public for help. This video taken on may 13th shows a little girl walking down an alley in the area of barton street and ken rate just moments before shot was fired. The beginning of what police say was a daylight gunfight. Let's get see driving off in the lane way. Well, circled a particular block fire buck in the neighbourhood. Many residents heard the shots. We hear. >> Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. >> And it's that doesn't sound like fireworks or anything like that. There were no reported injuries in this incident. But with homes lining the alley, there is fear that someone could be hurt or killed. Getting to where the neighbourhoods no longer safe and it doesn't feel comfortable to live around anymore when it comes to the shooting that happened in this alleyway. Police say they have received help from the public. And that is making all the difference. There are a number of cameras in the area and police say the community here refused to put up with the violence securing evidence at the scene. Providing us with statements offering video to appoint ron hoffman down the road. We are going to make some arrests, especially in cases like this is be the best time to tell tell the police that they can get the best information to get those guns off the streets.
