she is so young. She was like the youngest name the canadian olympic team, that was at 14. She has beat her own records, she's beat penny oleksiak's times and swimming. When you look at these women that amartey made a mark, obviously so inspirational. From a younger person's perspective, to look at these kids. Kids literally. They are so successful so quickly. I thick it is wonderful to watch for our country. >> Courtney: really inspiring. Speaking of olympian, haley wickenheiser. So incredible. Kura compliment on the ice, in the community, and the fact she retired as this gold-medal olympian and became a doctor. The discipline that would require, the skill set. So inspired by her and what she does. We talk to her quite often. >> Nick: we have spoken to her a few number of times. Super impressive. It is really hard to just choose one to be honest with you because there's great selections. I went with clara hughes. She has meddled in the summer and winter olympic games. Speedskating on a bike, and not only her incredible athletic and olympico comp rushman's but also what she has done for mental health. A big figurehead for bell let's talk for a few years, one of the few spokespeople or early spokespeople who came forward and really started talking about it and acknowledging the mental health challenges she went through. Not only has she helped inspire people in terms of overcoming mental health in dealing with mental health, but her athletic achievements are absolutely remarkable. To think you have meddled at both levels, at the highest levels in the olympics. Clara hughes really is exceptional canadian female athlete. I'm a tennis guy, and went bianka and rescue on the U.S. open a few years ago, what that did canadian women's tennis in particular has really launched it. Pretty amazing stuff. We want to have that conversation. Meantime we are upping the ante in today's conversation as well. Centre e-mails and you will get a shot at winning a pair of tickets to saturday's tfc match versus fc cincinnati. Kickoff at 7:30 at bmo field. Couple of reasons to join in this morning. It is 6:00, will come to cp24 breakfast. I'm courtney heels in for jennifer hsiung. >> Nick: I'm nick dixon. Thank you for being here. Here are the stories were following this morning.

>>> Crews are cleaning up and restoring powers and parts of york region and barrie after heavy winds, storms and hail at times overnight. >> Courtney: two people are in critical condition after shooting outside of a mississauga school near winston churchill boulevard and battleford road. We will bring it update from the scene. >> Nick: it is the news gta basketball fans have been waiting for. A wnba team to call their own. We are expecting that announcement in about three hours time. >>> The countdown is on. Not until the 2026 season, in the meantime on of our breaking news vehicles cruising the streets of our viewing area this morning giving you a sense of what it's like out there. Nice to see the trees in full bloom. Nice clear looking skies as well this morning and the temperature significantly more comfortable than it has been the last few days. A whole lot more calm out there than it was last night. >> Bill: yeah, the only thing lingering is the windows. Gusty winds today. Much more stable. Of an altar and of the last couple of days didn't get the lion's share of the active weather for sure, most of it was to the north and east of us. Very unsettled stretch with really muggy high humidity for some of really uncomfortable conditions. We have turned a corner. Things are stabling the next couple of days pulling back just a touch. Still above normal in the mid-twenties. Comfortable and warm. Slap on the sunscreen as well to protect your skin from the high uv. We will be looking at comfortable conditions for getting out there on a patio or to a park, or even lakeside without the worry of needing the umbrella or running for the hills when you see dark ominous clouds coming. 25 today, normal high just above 20. Winds remained gusty out of the southwest this afternoon gusting 40 to 50 kilometres per hour today and tomorrow. Showers and cooler. Cool trend on the way. Those details coming up. Over to lisa for a look at the roads. >> Lisa: thank you billy. Accommodation of lingering overnight roadwork wrapping up, but also problems. North down valley parkway this time in the morning definitely busier than usual. Heading past lawrence, picking up the last of the cones. The right lane blocked through here. Checkout westbound 401 express lanes. Normally busier because of lane realignment but to make matters worse, we have a collision in this construction zone. Single file. Best bet is sticking with the collectors through here. So far moving okay. Westwater want to express you can see as we speak crews picking up the cones as well past islington. That was for overnight repairs. Seeing a gem was 401 collectors past mavis. I will check in with cruise for an update in the next report. Back to you nick and courtney. >> Courtney: thank you. Hydro cruise have been busy overnight trying to restore electricity to thousands of customers. Following a line of powerful storms that swept across northern york region and the barrie area last night. Sppe machold on. Oh my goodness! Oh, my god! Okay, hold it. Hold on a minute. It is scary, not going to lie. >> Nick: yeah, I think we all feel the same way. This footage was shared with cp24 taken in bradford showing the intensity of the storms. The person took the video believed that there was a tornado nearby, however there are no reports of tornadoes touching down at this time. A tornado warning had been issued by environment canada though. >> Courtney: and this is what hydro one cruise have been facing. The utility says outages are mostly the result of downed trees and limbs. Over 200 in -- outages impacted a thousand hydro one customers in the quarter west of barrie and orillia area. The lights are expected to come back on throughout the day. Pretty significant though. >> Nick: it really is. Wild in certain parts of the region for sure. In the meantime toronto city councillors getting back at it again today looking at dozens of items still on the agenda. >> Courtney: yesterday was dominated by discussions over dollars and cents, specifically with council weighing asset management plan which shows $26 billion whole in the city's ten year plan to maintain infrastructure necessary to maintain current service levels. The hope is that other levels of government will know the city a financial lifeline. >> Nick: stirring up today, councillors will revisit the place that low-speed vehicles have on toronto streets. Electric scooters are still being given a pass despite their popularity in urban settings. But small electric cars with a maximum speed of 50 kilometres per hour are being recommended for use. >> Courtney: councillors brad bradford and jon burnside are putting forward a motion to speed up construction work on the gardiner. The proposal is to get the rehabilitation work happening around the clock in an effort to reduce the three year timeline set for this project. It is a discussion that is already happening behind the scenes over at city hall sppe like everybody understands the challenges and congestion here in the city of toronto. And cost the economy $11 billion annually and a loss of productivity. And perhaps even more important is it is really having an impact on people's quality of life. I see it in facebook groups, people stop and talk to me on the street. They are losing hours of their day to congestion in the city. None of that is coordinated. The idea that we will tie up a major artery like the gardiner

for three plus years with no end in sight is unacceptable. The past seven weeks have been horrendous for people. My motion in front of council at this meeting is to do everything we can to expedite that construction. That includes 24/7 working around the clock to get it done faster. >> This is a 60-year-old piece of aging infrastructure. It is in a poor state of repair. It needs to have that work done. This is $300 million project, and of course we are already looking for opportunities to accelerated. Hopeful city staff will report on some good news in july. >> Nick: mayor olivia chow's second priority item will also be discussed. It is an official plant amendment coming before councillors to ask them to consider townhouses and small-scale apartment buildings and major streets in the city. Staff is recommending sick story buildings with 30 units, but 60 unit buildings are also up for discussion. >> Courtney: the city will be celebre gets newest arrivals today as it looks to help the life and try to. This is the tenth annual toronto newcomer day. Festivities will be held in a phillips square from 10:00 this morning to 3:00 this afternoon. Newcomers will be able to meet with representatives from local organizations to learn about the different services they can access to make getting here a little bit easier. There also be a showcase of performances and the citizenship ceremony for new canadians. >> Nick: the city is also creating a new report aimed at changing the way homeless encampments are dealt with. Officials are now moving away from an enforcement model and focusing instead on preventative and supportive measures to get people into permanent homes. City hall has faced pushback for some unhoused people and advocates for clearing camps from parks and public spaces as toronto shelter system is at capacity. >> This past month we had an average every day of 225 people that called us and our central intake phone service. They were unable to get matched by the end of the day. As of may fifth there were 256 encampments at 131 city-owned properties in toronto. This work is about people. That's why we have evolved our strategic approach to encampments. Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home. This report and the accompanying protocols are just one piece of the measures we are taking to offer certainty, help, and dign people expressing home -- experience and homelessness and surrounding communities. >> Nick: the report will go before the city's economic community development committee coming up on may 29th. >> Courtney: toronto's wnba franchise is expected to be unveiled at a press conference later this morning. The league's commissioner has confirmed the news to the associated press, the wnba has had any new teams will be added for the 2026 season. Kilmer sports ventures is reported to own the team and is promising to make pretty major announcement over the news conference later today. Kilmer also a co-owner of maple leaf sports and entertainment. Eight toronto franchise would be the league's first outside of the us. The news conference is set to begin at 9:00 am. We will carry that life. >> Nick: the university of toronto is expected to hold talks today with students who have set up a pro-palestinian encampments on campus. The encampments was established three weeks ago in king's college circle. Demonstrators what the school to disclose its ties with the israeli government and divest from israeli companies. The university has said it is corresponding with student representatives, but it has concerns about safety and hate speech in the camp. Some of the protests are threatening participate much protesters are threatening to participate in a hunger strike until their demands are met. >> Courtney: for pro-palestinian protesters accused of vandalizing a downtown bookstore have had the charges against them dropped. Eleven people were charged after the indigo at bay and blore was splattered with red paint last year and posters were put up accusing ceo heather eastman of funding genocide. The crown says it is withdrawing the charges as there is not a reasonable prospect of conviction. It will proceed with the remaining prosecutions. >> Because of these allegations that were false and proven to be so. >> Based on the constitutional and legal frailties in the case against all of the accused, it would be my view that, in fact, there is no reasonable prospect of conviction in the case. >> As jews, we say colin companies that support israeli war crimes is a legitimate form of protest. Targeting indigo is not anti-semitic. >> Courtney: the remaining seven accused are charged with hate motivated offences include an criminal harassment, mischief and conspiracy to commit in indictable offends. >> Nick: to people are incredible condition after shooting outside of a mississauga school. Police say shots were fired in the parking lot of settlers green public school on montevideo road. These are live pictures coming in from the cedar and. This is close to winston churchill boulevard and battleford road. You can see all of those evidence markers and a couple of cars in the parking lot behind the police tape. This happened after 11:00 last night. The two victims were taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. Investigators say they don't have any suspect information so far, but that this appears to be

an isolated incident. >> Courtney: gta police services launching a campaign to fight street racing. Police say street racing has no jurisdictional boundaries which is one of the reason they are coming together for this campaign. >> Nick: a girls hockey coach in brampton has been charged for allegedly sexually exploiting two players on his team. Peel police began an investigation into 26 year old joshua sammut a little more than a month ago after being given information about alleged inappropriate behaviour involving the coach. The ontario women's hockey association says sammut is ineligible to coach and its sanctions events pending the results of the charges. >> Courtney: amanda has been convicted of murdering his mother in leslieville in 2022. A juri ruling 23-year-old dallas ly is guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his mother, 56-year-old tien ly. Curb and he was found in several garbage bags in march of 2022, in the eastern avenue area, after she was fatally stabbed in the apartment she shared with her son. Ly killing his mother was never in question during the trial, but the defence had argued it was the result of years of abuse. Key will be sentenced at a later date. >> Nick: ontario long-term care nurses are expected to see the most significant wage increase in more than three decades. The union which represents the majority of those nurses say the raises will work out to about 11.5 percent over two years. The starting wage for registered nurses in the long-term care homes goes from $32.22 per hour to nearly $34 per hour. While the top eight year rate goes from $48 to $51 per hour. >> Courtney: a case of bird flu has been reported in a farm worker in michigan pick health officials say the worker had regular exposure to infected livestock and was already being monitored. The person reported ice symptoms and has recovered. This is the second case reported as part of the ongoing us virus outbreak that is linked to cattle. A case in texas was reported back in march, that patient also has recovered with no lasting problems. Health officials say the risk to the general public remains low. >> Nick: a rally will be held in support of striking nestlé workers in toronto today. Unifor says it will join members of local 252 outside of the manufacturing plant on sterling road, this in a show of solidarity. The demonstration is set for 10:00 this morning. Hundreds of nestlé workers work not just walk off the job most three weeks ago. The unit is looking for pension plans improvement and rejected a two-year freeze in a cost-of-living adjustment. Most of those owners will be facing a higher rate, meeting there monthly bills will skyrocket. A particular concern here are negatively amortizing loans where payments are already only going to be interest and not making a dent in the principal loan amount. >> Nick: westjet is planning and introducing a cheaper fair category four passengers willing to forgo a carry-on bag. The airline's ceo says the ultralow pricing will go to traveller seeking the most affordable fair, will also free up overhead bin space for other passengers. He says the new category will be available in a couple of weeks time.
