Welcome to see people before before breakfast I'm courtney heels. >> Nick: sorry I didn't mean to get you off your I nick dixon in for nick dixon. Care of the top stories this morning your crews are cleaning up and restoring parts of our york region and barrie after heavy winds, storms and even hail at times overnight. >> Courtney: talk to our people are in critical condition after a shooting outside of a mississauga school near winston churchill boulevard and battleford road your queer life at the scene and will bring it update on this case. >> Both teams there are moments on both sides. >> Nick: the news gta basketball fans have been waiting for. A wnba team to call their own. We are expecting that announcement later this morning. >> Courtney: that is exciting. >> Nick: huge story there indeed. Live shot from the buggy camera along the toronto harbour this morning. We need someone to comment clean that one-off.

gives you a sense of how buggy it is lakeside these days. It's also very calm and peaceful. If you can look beyond the horrific scene of those bugs there. >> Bill: it is nature. A snack for migrating birds. >> Nick: let's get the birds to that camera asap. >> Bill: enjoy your buff it. Spirit is like a windshield of a car. >> Bill: a much calmer day than yesterday. Sometimes for meteorologist the city of toronto can be a little frustrating because it's kind of the doughnut hole of calm a few reasons for that. It correctly pancake the storms that rolled towards us and then they start redeveloping to the east of the city. We saw several rounds of very intense activity just north end of the gta and northward. Boy there were some scary sights and sounds for areas north of richmond hill, and up towards bradford. Friends and orillia giving me a colin saying the winds and the hail end of rain were just incredibly intense. That was dealt with during the afternoon and again in the evening. The shots are from barrie. They got the mechanically strong winds, lots of lightning and heavy downpours obviously. A around the area as well. Very active day. The powder cake was lit by few different elements, but here in the city you may have been sketching ahead going to got windy last evening but we didn't see a lot of that intense weather that stayed to the north. 15 degrees right now, is very mild for this time of day. You notice the humidity has really dropped. Much more manageable, not as much hairspray required this morning. Keep the freeze in check. There is a look at the golden horseshoe, we should be dipping down to the high single digits still and topping out just at 20. Yesterday we got between 29 and 30, second data row. Today a different day because even though we got a southwesterly wind it will be gusty both today and tomorrow. Not looking at the same kind of humidity that would make it feel overwhelming. Mainly sunny skies, 25, gusty conditions. Wind gusts both day 40 to 50 kilometres per hour but loads of sunshine. Much more comfortable with lower human to deep. 21, we do cooldown with the risk of a line of thunderstorms coming through saturday afternoon but it doesn't look like a washout of a day. Little bit more defined in terms of when that's coming through and sunday a mix of sun and cloud. But cooler. Of those details coming up in the long-range. Lease over the. >> Lisa: thank you billy, at morning. So far to get things going we have residual overnight repairs to pass your way. Northside don valley parkway which was starting to kind of get a little bit slow and rightfully so. Lane restrictions. They are picking up the cones again through the ov -- york most richly conceived on a major situation wrapping that up. Westbound 401 definitely slower than usual in the express lanes heading past islington out past the 409 and through the kipling overpass because of overnight construction which again should be the process of wrapping up shortly. Sections of the gardiner into the city so far looking okay. Nick and courtney back to you, good morning. >> Nick: good morning. Thanks. >> Courtney: hydro crews have been very busy overnight trying to restore power to thousands of customers following that line of powerful storms that swept across northern york region and barrie area last night. >> My goodness! Oh, my god! Okay hold on. Hold on a minute! This is kind of scary, not going to lie. >> Nick: this footage shared with cbt when he forte can and bradford shows the intensity of the storms. The person who took it believes there was a tornado nearby, however there are no reports of any tornadoes touching down at the time. The tornado warning had been issued by environment canada. >> Courtney: this is what it looked like in barrie yesterday afternoon, as environment canada issued that severe thunderstorm warning. The system brought heavy winds, rain, and even hail. >> Nick: this is what hydro one crews have been facing. Utility says outages are mostly the result of downed trees and limbs. More than 200 outages have impacted more than 8000 hydro one customers, mostly in the corridor west of barrie into the orillia area. Lights and power are expected to come back on throughout the day. Also keep in mind about 9:30 last night when suddenly in emergency alert tech if you live in that region affected by much of what we have just shown you, that came over people's phones jolting a lot of people in there sleep or just before they were going to sleep saying effectively a tornado warning. It was later dismissed. That must have been quite the evening last night. With that footage are really shows you what it was like in some of those areas. >> Courtney: moved in so quickly. Something to talk about today for sure.

>>> Another story where following, toronto city councillors back at it again today looking at dozens of items still on the agenda. >> Nick: meantime yesterday dominated by discussions over dollars and cents, specifically with council weighing an asset management plan which shows a $26 billion hole in the city's ten year plan to maintain the infrastructure necessary to maintain current service levels. The hope is that other levels of government will throw the city a financial lifeline. >> Courtney: starting off the day, councillors will revisit the place that low-speed vehicles apps on city streets. Electric scooter's is still given a pass despite their popularity in urban settings. Small electric cars with a maximum speed of 50 kilometres per hour are being recommended for use. >> Nick: speaking of cars, councillors bread bradford and jon burnside putting for devotion to speed up the construction work on the gardiner to get those cars and trucks moving through their faster and perhaps sooner. The proposal is to get the rehabilitation work happening around the clock in an effort to reduce the projected three year timeline for the project. It is a discussion that is already happening behind the scenes at city hall. >> This is absolutely having an impact on our economy, it is killing small business and the quality of life here in the city is starting to erode. Minister sakari has been very supportive of the idea of moving faster. It is unfortunate that we have had to put people through this over the past seven weeks. I am hopeful that council will share my position and we will find a way to get this done faster because it is time for city hall to take congestion more seriously. >> City staff are already doing that. They are looking into it right now. They are testing some of the equipment to see how noisy it is in the evenings. To see if they can accelerate the work and how they could do that best. They are also consulting with industry experts. They are already employing prefabrication techniques, materials. But of course always looking to do more. Welcome the suggestions by councillor burnside and councillor bradford, but in fact I will ask for that report to come back earlier and come back in july because I know our capable city staff are working on those things speak to mayor olivia chow's second priority item is also a discussion, an official plan amendment coming before councillors that will ask them to consider townhouses and small-scale apartment buildings on major streets in the city. Staff recommend six-story buildings with 30 units, but 60 unit buildings are also up for discussion. >> Nick: toronto's wnba franchises expected to be unveiled at a news conference later this morning. The league's commissioner has confirmed the news with the associated press. The w. Iba has said any new teams will be added for the 2026 season. Reportedly owning the team promising to make a major announcement at a news conference this morning. Killed her is also a co-owner of maple leaf sports entertainment, a toronto franchise would be the league's first outside of the us. The news conference is set for 9:00 this morning. >> Courtney: the university of toronto is expecting to hold talks today with students who have set up a pro-palestinian encampment on campus. The encampments was established three weeks ago in king's college circle. The demonstrators want the school to disclose its ties with the israeli government and divest from israeli companies. The university has said it is corresponding with student representatives, that it has concerns about safety and hate speech in the camp. Some of the protesters are threatening to participate in a hunger strike until their demands are met. >> Nick: to people are in critical condition after a shooting outside of a misissauga school. Police sable shots were fired in the parking lot of settlers green public school on montevideo road near winston churchill boulevard and battleford road. It was just after 11:00 last night. These are live pictures from the scene this morning we can see police tape is still up and plenty of evidence markers at the scene of the shooting. Two victims were taken to hospital in life threatening condition pick investigators say they don't have any suspect information at this point, but this appears to be an isolated incident. >> Courtney: a man has been rushed to hospital after a stabbing in the west end. The call for this came in about 5:00 pm to the area of chain and alliance avenue, north of st. Clair. Paramedics say a man in his 20 was what taken was serious but nonlife threatening injuries. No suspect information has been released. >> Nick: the unseen investigation into a deadly boat crash in the lake north of kingston has wrapped up and new details are emerging. >> Underwater search and recovery unit will all do their part, along with the reconstructionist and traffic collision investigators to determine what caused this collision between two vessels. >> Nick: three people between the ages of 21 and 23 were killed when a speed boat collided with fishing boat on bob's lakes saturday night. Five others were hospitalized. Opp say the crash occurred on a narrow channel with a speedboat ending up on top of the small fishing boat next to a concrete dock near several cottages. Police cannot say yet or speculate on whether there will be any charges laid. >> Courtney: well known that alter processed foods are bad for health but a new study showing light on how bad they can be. Researchers examined the diets of 30,000 people who were followed for up to 20 years and they found increasing your intake of ultra processed foods by just 10 percent can raise the

risk of cognitive decline by 16 percent. The study also found evidence suggesting higher consumption of ultra processed foods associated with a 50 percent rate or chance of cardiovascular disease related death and some mental disorders. >> Nick: quite literally food for thought. Wow. Okay. Let's talks ports this morning, the blue jays brought out the bats against the chicago white sox last night. [ Cheering ] >> Bichette sends one to deep centre. Gone! >> Courtney: the jays exploded for seven runs in the second row capped off by a two run home run by boba schatz. The seven runs is the most the jays have scored in an ending all season, leading them to a 9-to win. Chrisp bassitt pitched seven innings he gave up no runs to secure the w. The jays when the series and they open a series against the tigers in detroit tonight. Busy schedule for the jays. >> Nick: it is. Alright. Good to see that when a series for a change. It has been a rough stretch for the jays lightly. In the meantime having a shell of a time at the indianapolis -- shell of a time. >> Courtney: this is a cool one. This is where the 45th annual 500 got underway yesterday. Dubbed the greatest spectacle in tortoise racing. Five contestants made their way down a track towards a grand prize of a platter of fruit. The winner by more than a hair was a tortoise named helio, who shared his shell liberation with some other competitors. Kahlon do you think that takes? >> Nick: I wish we had that in the script because this is literally the slowest race on earth. The tortoise. >> Courtney: I feel like it is cute. Good platter. >> Nick: just chow down on my fruit. That is the start line. There is no urgency in this race whatsoever. >> Courtney: I wonder if they are all in a line or exploring as they go. >> Nick: apparently we spread the video up. Kidding. >> Courtney: maybe. Might have to. >> Nick: that is hilarious. >> Courtney: well earned at the end. >> Nick: good for them. Good for helio winning the tortoise 500. When we come back here on cp24 before breakfast, newstalk 1010's john moore will check-in. We will get into what toronto is talking about on this thursday morning. We are back right after this. [ ] . Long hours of daylight that contributes to the warming.

you saw some significant heat yesterday in the day before. Humidity breaking a little bit, wins remaining gusty though out of the southwest getting us above normal to a high in the mid-twenties today. I think it'll be more manageable except for the wind cackled onto your napkins if you're on a patio. Again heading to the mid-twenties. Lots of sunshine to start the day and lots of sunshine to finish it. High-pressure hangs on tomorrow. As we get another day of sunshine and more comfortable conditions with a high of about 24. Yesterday the day before we got almost to 30 but felt like low to mid thirties. Really muggy and that was the energy by which a lot of storms develop especially north end of the city. High-pressure, very different situation. High-pressure, sinking air that keeps things pretty stable. Until we hit saturday afternoon. Kind of a brief few hours as we get a few storms rumble through on saturday. That is the leading edge of cooler air that will punch and for the end of the weekend and the start of the next workweek. Enjoy enjoy the calm, the beautiful conditions today and tomorrow. Get that line of storms coming through saturday afternoon, and then cooler to bit unsettled as we head to the next work week. Call of those details coming up. Back to you. [ ] >> Nick: plenty to get into this morning as we get into what toronto is talking about with new stack 1010's john moore on a thursday money. Are doing well. >> John: doing well. Going golfing with bill. >> Nick: great day for it. Speech one of the stories we are following on this pro-palestinian demonstration taking place at u of t, we received an update from the school yesterday. >> John: they held a press conference actually and somewhat strident. They've actually begun a hunger strike actually. The risk of being glib, I googled this morning how long can you survive without food, anywhere between three weeks and bobby sands, the nra member managed to get to 66 days. Maybe there is an end line on the encampment. >> Nick: in the meantime the encampments strategy in the city is moving away from sort of clearing and enforcement to a different proposal I suppose. >> John: I don't know how measurably different this is going to be because it is sort of what we're doing already. We are basically trying to get people out of the encampments into housing. We will have this multipronged strategy of social workers and housing specialists, and constant engagement. What it takes off the table is flushing people out of the encampments. It is going to be another summer of encampments. >> Nick: seems to be. >> Courtney: gardiner another hot topic we have been focused on for quite some time now. Three years of construction, the hope is something council is considering some changer options. >> John: push has seemed to come to shove. Bradford dry spread bradford and johns burnside have moved city staff to figure out how to speed this thing up. Olivia chow actually said the motion is redundant because she said she already ordered people to look into speeding the work up. But I guess what it confirms as we have come to this crunch point where we realize three years of the gardiner being paralyzed is unacceptable. >> Nick: really is. In the meantime and brighter and brighter news, the wnba will announce a toronto expansion team coming up in a few hours time. >> John: I'll happen during our shows. 9:00 this morning larry tannenbaum and company will announce wnba franchise, not that much of a surprise we learned last week this was coming. Also not that much of us prize but finally everyone is talking about it, teresa resch is going to be the executive who will lead this. She has been with the rafters for 11 years. Mentor to by messiah ujiri. >> Courtney: so exciting. Have to agree. Update on hot dogs. We found out they will close their flagship cinema for a while. >> John: closed down for about three months. They say they need about $2 million from the feds in order to survive. The hotdogs were -- hotdogs are founded 1993, they had their own designated theatre that's a been a part of the city's cultural scene. At the same time the movie model has changed fundamentally. Not just because a lot of people don't want to be in movie theatres post covid, but also used to have to order a print, haven't flown, you'd be able to short for like a week or something like that. And now any day but he could stream. I love that people at hotdocs and I think it's a fine institution, but I think the model is changed such that maybe the audience won't be there anymore. >> Nick: we will see if this pause will give them an opportunity to reevaluate and reassess and maybe restrategize at work. In the meantime an interesting one. Millennials are quiet quitting rather than asking their bosses for pto. What is pto? >> John: that is paid time off it is quiet vacationing they are doing in the wake. That was the trend. Now quiet vacationing. I would love to see exactly how much of this is entirely true because a lot of times that we identified trends and especially trends amongst millennials and we say they are so different. But the majority of jen said, 78 percent, do not take there full paid time off. However, apparently they do take breaks but they just don't tell anybody about it. For exam allows hearing from a friend of mine who lives with his girlfriend and they both

have a shared office, she will be in the kitchen and says moves my mouse. >> Nick: to make it seem like you're actually sitting there. Move my mouse. Moved my cheese. Isn't that the name of a book? Pretty pretty funny. Quite vacationing, not quite quitting speech I feel like that is something we couldn't pull off. Taking a break and no one would notice. >> Nick: people would notice if there was no one sitting at the desk and there was two coffee mugs and a bunch of paper are you there? >> John: you could try it. There is a fireplace channel. >> Nick: that is worked out all right. We are getting at is something today. A conversation with christine sinclair, about a month ago. They introduced her barbie. They have a barbie of christine sinclair. Asking viewers this morning, what canadian female athlete has inspired you the most? Or impresses you the most? I have met her and interviewed her, I find her fascinating as an athlete and an individual. >> Nick: pretty spectacular. That conversation. Fun conversation I had with her as well. >> Courtney: timely with this pending announcement with the wnba. >> Nick: john, have a great show. We talked about this. Our conversation with christine sinclair coming up this morning. She has inspired a conversation about canadian female athletes speech at that's right.
