Last july there were 84 encampments, now just nine but this outreach worker is disappointed. >> We find an inquest year ago, said that people need safe resources but none of the protocol recommends any of that so it mainly focuses on communicating clearly to people that will be cleared and if they don't fix up the shelter option... More of the right housing and services are available, encampments will keep popping up. >> Zuraidah: rally was held at university of toronto this evening and had of talks between students at appropriate list any encampment and university administration tomorrow. See brian was there and brings us the details. >> Reporter: king's college circle is a location where this encampment has been set up since may 2nd and it consist of both the university of toronto students and some outsiders. They are pro- palestinian demonstrators you have been here since may 2nd and they are bowing -- vowing to remain here until two of their main demands are met that they are putting towards the university of toronto and that is not the university of toronto disclose the relationship with israel and that the university of toronto divest any investments that they have with israeli companies. Tonight at 6:00, this very large crowd gathered on the south side of king's college circle where many people addressed the crowd through a loudspeaker and reaffirms their determination and their commitment to staying here at this location until those demands are met. You're looking at a large crowd right now and they will continue their demonstration until those demands are met. Earlier on, we heard from some of the speakers who addressed the crowd. Here's some of what was said. >> They think that we are weak, that we will not be able to maintain this encampment but they are wrong. Look at the support we have within the student communities, within the wider toronto community. We ask everyone to please apply pressure on admin, sound that, show them that we are here and we will not compromise again. This time we will be in for the palestinian people. >> Some of the demonstrators here tonight have vowed to participate in a hunger strike starting tonight and they have said they are committed to this hunger strike until such time that the university of toronto meets those two time jewish demands. There is a meeting set up for tomorrow.

Neighbours described hearing a violent impacts. >> He was a big bank. >> York regional police aaron 10:45 pm, a 16 euro boy was riding a mini bike when he was struck and killed by a vehicle at this four-way stop at forest drive. >> A bike crumpled up, lying over there. There was a boy, paramedics came, there was cpr, all the debris of the bike and the car. >> Reporter: the team was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries where he later died. >> What we can say is that the vehicle and the minibike collided with each other at the intersection. In terms of the sequence of events leading up to that collision, we are still trying to get witness accounts to help us that together. >> Witnesses tell us the vehicle came to a stop by these mailboxes more than 150 metres from where they say the crash occurred. The driver was nowhere to be found. >> They left the door open. Whatever it was took off. >> Reporter: officers arrested the driver near the scene. The 24-year-old has been charged with dangerous operation causing death, failure to stop after an accident causing death, and possession of a controlled substance. >> He was not impaired at the time but the possession of a controlled substance charge was the result of searching the vehicle and finding what we believe to be a controlled substance in the vehicle. We believe it to be cocaine but we can't confirm that. >> Resident say speeding is a problem at this intersection. >> It's sad to hear. This is our recurring problem. Cars are whizzing by, they. >> Jessica: that stop sign. >> Please state the accused is bound by a release order for an unrelated offence but didn't reveal that charge. >> Please state investigation is ongoing and are appealing for witnesses and anyone with a dash came our surveillance footage to come forward. >> I'm bandits fighting for his life in hospital following an early morning shooting downtown. It happened shortly before 12:30 am near isabella and sherburne street. Officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds in a laneway he was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Witnesses say they heard a commotion behind the building shortly before shots were fired the police have not provided any details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting. Hamilton police asking for the public's help as the number of shootings in that city have more than doubled over the past year. >> There have been brazen daylight shootings, buildings indiscriminately shot under cover of darkness. Several suspects at large. Hamilton is experiencing a steep increase in gun violence. >> We are running a record pace. >> In 2024, there have been 22 shootings, more than double last year and on pace to beat the record of 2019. The most recent just this past weekend. Three suspects seen fleeing after shooting an apartment building and many of the shootings police say they are encountering big obstacles to their investigation so they are appealing to the public for help. This video taken on may 13th shows a little girl walking down an alley in the area of barton street just moments before this shot was fired, the beginning of a police say was it daylight gunfight. >> That vehicle you see driving off, circled that particular

block and then fire back. >> Reporter: in the neighbourhood, many residence heard the shots. >> That doesn't sound like fireworks or anything like that. >> There were no reported injuries in this incident but with homes lining the alley, there is fear that someone could be hurt or killed. >> It's getting to where the neighbourhoods no longer safe and it doesn't feel comfortable anymore. >> When it comes to the shooting in this alleyway, police say they have received help from the public and that is making all the difference. Half an hour earlier, police were called to the area of deference street south of blue or four reports of a stabbing. A man in his twenties was taken to hospital with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries. Police are searching for a single suspect in connection with this incident. They are asking anyone with information to come forward. Girls hockey coach in brampton has been charged for allegedly sexually exploiting two players on his team. The 26-year-old is charged with two counts each of sexual exploitation and child alluring. Police began investigating a little over a month ago after being given information about alleged inappropriate behaviour involving a coach. The ontario women's hockey association says they are ineligible to coach and the sanctioned events pending the result of the charges. Peel police are asking anyone with information to come forward. City council is set to debate accelerating construction on the gardener tomorrow. One of many issues stretching the city's budget as toronto tries to climb out of a $26 billion funding hole. >> The fountain in the middle of mel lassman square paints the perfect picture of the infrastructure issues. We need a new deal for the city of toronto. >> This is a direct consequence of the two previous mayors who wouldn't invest in keeping the structure in good repair. >> One of the city's most contentious infrastructure targets -- projects has also been added to the agenda. Three-year construction on the gardner is at capacity by 30 percent and tied up traffic like never before. >> The idea that we are going to type a major artery like the gardner for three plus years with no end in sight, that's unacceptable. >> Someone who previously lived in asia 24/7 is definitely something that should be normal. The union representing a majority of nurses says the races will work out to the 11 and a half percent over two years. The starting wage registered nurses in long-term care homes goes from $32.22 per hour to nearly $34 per hour. Meanwhile, the top eight year rate increases from $48 per hour to $51 per hour. Thousands of new clients are arriving each month. They have jobs but not enough money to pay the rent and afford grocery. >> Were growing at 3-5 percent in the city of toronto every single month. This past april there were 311,000 client visits, up from 60,000 prepandemic. >> The bleak numbers match a report released today by food banks canada. They work with 5100 local food banks and community groups in all provinces and territories. Here's a look at the findings. 44 percent of people feel they are doing worse financially compared to last year and one in four are experiencing food insecurity. >> The stand out for me is that behind all of these numbers are real people and real folks who are struggling to make ends meet like never before.
