THIS IS TORONTO'S BREAKING NEWS CP24. HELLO. I'M SIJIA LIU. THANKS SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. IT'S THE ANNOUNCEMENT BASKETBALL FANS HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR. TORONTO IS OFFICIALLY GETTING A WNBA TEAM. GILMORE SPORTS

ventures led by mlse chair larry ten-month has been awarded the team, which will join the leak in 2026. The franchise will be the 14th in the wnba after the golden state val crease expansion team starts playing next year. Toronto is currently unnamed team will play out of the coca cola coliseum at exhibition place. It's the first franchise outside the U.S. and is expected to play games in vancouver and montreal as well. Plenty of dignitaries and politicians were on hand for today's announcement. >> Now the city of toronto will join us. >> This is all possible. >> Because of larry tanenbaum and kilmer sports ventures. They have been determined partners committed to bringing a wnba franchise here to canada. We've been in conversations with larry for a while. And it became clear that he and his team have the experience, the infrastructure, the this is a visionary ownership group. And to larry and judy, there is no one we would rather partner with to take the w's first act on our journey to become a more globally. >> Through thick and thin through heartbreak and triumph and heartbreak. Torontonians consistently demonstrate their passion, their commitment and their love for professional sports. Toronto is also a diversity welcoming city and a progressive city. So it should come as no surprise that when it hosted the first-ever wnba game in canada a year ago, it sold out and set records for attendance broadcast viewership and merchandise sales. >> And for more reaction to today's news, we're joined live by cp24's lindsay bus scale. Lindsay. This feels like the start of a new era in sports in toronto. You have been talking to fans tonight, what are they saying to you? >> Yeah, I mean, a lot of people incredibly excited about this. Cja know this is such a moment and we've been having such a moment when it comes to women's sports and more national league's gaining actual attention. You look at the pwhl this year and now you've got a women's basketball team coming to toronto and seems as though there's a lot of interest. So I think those seats will be fall when they do start playing in 2026, but you really have to look at how big this is not just having a women's basketball team here, but what this means when it comes to role models for both young girls and young boys growing up watching professional athletes that are women playing in a basketball team. You know what this means for equality in sport. We obviously still a long way to go, but this is another really big stop. We have been speaking of people tonight about how they feel when it comes to having a team here in toronto. A lot of excitement. Have a listen. >> I think it's a rated time to also make a global like in the U.S. you have a lot of women's basketball it's also like a varsity sport. So I think if they bring that to canada on cars. A lot of young female athletes to participate as well. >> And that's awesome. I mean, like it's about time we got a wnba team up in here right? I mean, the raptors >> I for toronto, it's a bigger caught accomplishment, especially, you know, empowering women and women in sports. It's great for the city to bring more tourism. And even a sports for short, you know, along with the raptors, you know, we have a have a new wnba team coming in 2026 will be great for the city. I'm hoping the city's electric and vibrant. >> So it really is game-changing sijia as you is coming in 2026 us a couple of years away. And that team will be playing out of the coca cola coliseum at exhibition place. But if need be, they will move to scotiabank, which is a lot more sees the exhibition place incredibly exciting. The owner said today they don't have a name yet for the team, they're going to take their time looking for public input as well when it comes to finding a name. We did ask people tonight as well what they thought there was actually a couple interesting ideas and a lot of them surround the raptors kind of a spinoff of the raptors, the toronto lizards, the toronto rock says was named twice by 2 separate people want to ask. So it seems as though people are leaning one way or another. I do know, as I mentioned, our producer mandy says the trial bandits will be a good name for this team. I think that's pretty cute. I think that would work well. So so many ideas, obviously, that public input is going to come a little later. This is just the first stop today, but really, big news here tonight. Sijia. >> Yeah, I love the toronto band. Is that such a great name? And I mean, picking that name is is half the fun, right? We still have 2 years ago, but this will be a conversation that a lot of us will be having. I can't wait. Yeah. Well, thanks so much lindsay, appreciate the update. Tonight. Now city council has approved a motion to have staff look at ways to ramp up construction on the gardner. The motion direct city staff to study the feasibility of 24/7 construction, including work on sundays, will also considering how to minimize impacts on the local

community. An interim report is due back in july. The gardener is currently reduced to 2 lanes of traffic each way between dufferin and strachan for major rehabilitation work. It's scheduled to continue for 3 years. >> And I appreciated the commentary in the answers and the thoughtful replies from our staff team tonight. They are on it. They want to see us do better. But there is a role for this council on this admonition ration to exercise some leadership, provide that direction and I'll be honest, it shouldn't have taken 7 weeks of a horror show to have this conversation. This should have been tied-up from the beginning, focused on how we could get this done as quickly as possible because of the extent of the impact. >> City councillors also voted to allow small electric cars with a maximum speed of 50 kilometres an hour on streets. E-scooters remain banned on streets, although it is legal to own them in toronto. City staff also admitted there was a little police enforcement of the e-scooter ban. The university says it will not terminate any partnerships with israeli universities. We hope that they will say yes. >> The group u of t occupy for palestine calls the offer inadequate and offensive student protesters say they are also worried about a viol >> Administration claims that they want to have this in cap and come to a peaceful resolution. Time to blindside us at every turn. This is a farce. Devastated to us on record that they will not call the police over this weekend. The trespass notice lies that they spread about us about hate speech. They continue to talk about lay the groundwork for a violence clearing. >> The offer comes amid some jewish students at the school saying they're not comfortable on campus since the encampments was set up, they delivered letter highlighting their concerns to the school's president. >> Recent events on campus has caused our community to feel unsafe and unwelcome on a campus that we had just has every right as anybody else. Students have been blocking other students from entering buildings. They have been blocking access to the university campus grounds. That's a problems. There's no other way to put it. >> The students say they've seen an rise in antisemitism on campus since october 7th and say the school administration is not doing anything to address it.
