They were able to knock down the fire and there were no injuries. There is no word yet on the extent of damage or what caused it. Gta police services of launched a campaign to combat street racing project erase, which stands for eliminate great racing activity on streets everywhere % kicked off at exhibition place this morning. Police from toronto, york peel halton hamilton and the opp were in attendance. They're coming together for this campaign because they say street racing has no jurisdictional boundaries. >> Since this time last year, we have seen a 31% increase in calls for service relating to stunt driving. These numbers are alarming and they are unacceptable. Last summer, the toronto police service lead project burnout, a joint forces operation in partnership with the opp. >> Peel york and durham regional police services. Project bread. That was a huge success relating in 143 arrests. 135 spent writing and 90 criminal code dangerous driving charges. >> The reality is and street racing. And dangerous driving is illegal and it has no place on our roadways or highways or our parking lots. Recently, york regional police and other gta police services have been dealing with an increase of organized groups of drivers gathering in large numbers for car meets. And when some instances they engage in illegal activities, hazardous actions such as racing, drifting and burnouts. >> Stunt driving and street racing carry possible fines up to $10,000 as well as a 30 day license suspension at roadside and a 14 day vehicle. Impoundment. The university of toronto has made an offer to the representatives of a pro-palestinian encampment in response to demands from those protesters. Cp24's lindsey viscaya joins us live from the university with more. And lindsay, it looks like the protesters are still up the encampment and still up, despite this off for what is the latest? You can tell us. >> Yeah, well, that's right, sijia. I mean, this offer came today from the university to the students inside this but the university says that the students have 24 hours to look over this offer and either accepted or rejected. So that's why this encampment is still here tonight. I'll step out of the way. So you can just kind of see what's going on. Now we did ask or the organization really who is organizing encampment, the students to speak with but they declined. They said that they will not be speaking with any media until tomorrow morning, when they make an announcement because they say emergency meetings are happening in these encampments right now going over this offer that the university has given to the students and trying to make a decision when it comes to what to do. Now, this offer includes an invitation for students to attend the university's business port of governing council meeting. That's happening on june 19th. And then at that meeting, the students would be able to present their demands. The offer also includes a working group to consider options for disclosure and greater of investments. Now the school has said that it will not be cutting ties with israeli universities, but it will explore disclosure of investments. Knots, of course, one of the main demands that

students in this encampment have been demanding of the university over the last couple of we have heard already today from some students about this offer and about the ongoing negotiations between the university and students over the last couple of weeks. Here's more on that. >> This administration claims that they want to have this in cap and come to a peaceful resolution. Time to blindside us at every turn. This is a farce. Devastated to us on record that they will not call the police over this weekend. The trespass notice lies that they spread about us about hate speech. They continue to talk about lay the groundwork for a violence clearing. >> So as I said, sijia students here will need to accept that offer from the bought it within 24 hours. So by tomorrow afternoon, if they do not accept the offer than the university says it will be issuing a trespass notice. And the school's president says it will also pursue any subsequent legal be interesting to see what comes from this. As I members in this encampment say they're not going to be speaking with us until tomorrow when this announcement regarding what their decision is going to be moving forward. So we'll have to wait and see what happens too. For now, it could go either way tomorrow. Be interesting. Thanks so much, lindsay for that update from the university of toronto. >> Toronto city councillors are back at it again to continuing to debate dozens of items still on the agenda during the second day of meetings. >> City councillors voted to allow small electric cars with maximum speed to 50 kilometres an hour on streets. E-scooters, however, remain banned on streets, although it is legal to own them. In toronto. City staff also admitted there was little police enforcement on the scooter ban. >> I really hope the federal government does create standards. They should, but there is no sign that they're about to do and in the meantime, it's good. He's are all over roads. And as I say, the evidence we got was that is 40 to 50,000 in the city already and growing rapidly. So. It would be better if the federal government took action. It would be better if the provincial government took more action. But the fact is, they're not. And here we are in the city. This kid is everywhere and we're not doing anything to regulate. >> And this evening councillor brad bradford will be presenting a motion to make sure the city does all it can to speed up construction on the gardiner expressway that is significantly stalled traffic in and out of toronto. >> We need to be exploring items like 24/7 construction assembly of some of the infrastructure off-site delivery. And finally having a coordinated approach to all of the parallel streets in the downtown that are equally congested and tied up with construction. You're dealing with major construction projects on lakeshore on gardiner, on king street, richmond adelaide queen. And that's why it at such a breaking point right now because there are no alternative routes for people to to use. So they are, they are in the unfortunate position of being stuck in traffic. >> The timeline for rehab work on the aging expressway is 3 years in a look at the gardiner this evening. You can see that traffic backed up looking like a parking lot. City staff are already looking at some other options to speed it up. And mayor olivia chow second priority item will also be discussed. It's an official plan amendment to allow townhouses in small-scale apartment buildings on major streets in the city. Staff recommends 6 story buildings with 30 units. But 60 unit buildings are also up for discussion. The union representing thousands of ttc workers has formally set june 7th as a strike date. It follows a ruling by ontario's top court, which is upholding the right of transit workers to strike the provincial government appealed the ruling that set a law eliminated the workers right to strike was unconstitutional. That appeal was dismissed today atu local one 13 represents about 12,000 operators and other frontline staff at the ttc contract talks continue. But the union says they remain far apart on the main issues of job security, wages and benefits. And the union representing striking nestle workers in toronto held a rally in support of those on the picket line today, unifor members demonstrated outside the company's manufacturing plant on sterling road in a show of solidarity. Hundreds of employees walked off the job almost 3 weeks ago. The union's key demands include pension plan improvements. It says no progress has been made at the bargaining table so far. >> People's expectations are high and you know what, rightly so in in this climate. So the end goal here is to get it fair collective agreement that everybody's happy with everybody can return to work >> The demands that the workers have our fair they're right, demands. And I they're thinking about their future, it's about pensions, it's about, it's unfortunate. We can't resolve all issues that this company has. And the

workers have that, whether it's workers working without benefits. They're working in one of the most expensive cities in canada, if not the world. And with inflation going up with rents, with the mortgage payments, everything, it's just not acceptable that nestle is not at the table dealing with these workers trying to resolve resolve this dispute. >> Unifor says there are currently no negotiation dates planned. Well, it's the announcement basketball fans have been waiting for. Toronto is officially getting a wnba team. Kilmer sports ventures led by mlse chair larry tanenbaum has been awarded the team, which will join the league in 2026. The franchise will be the 14th in the wnba after the golden state bakries expansion team starts playing next year. Toronto is currently names team will play out of the coca cola coliseum at exhibition place. It's the first franchise outside the U.S. and is expected to play games in vancouver and montreal as well. Plenty of dignitaries and politicians were on hand for today's announcement. >> And just got me thinking, let's look at the data. Let's find a committed ownership group. Let's make sure we have a good arena and player experience. Let's have a preseason game near which coming up the pandemic. We eventually did in 23 little 3 years late, but I saw excitement in the vibrancy of the city around women's sports and women's basketball. And obviously canada basketball and having canadian players in our league playing at the highest level elite. I'm all all factored into it. But when larry and I met, it was, you know, kind of like that. Jerry maguire, you had me at hello. >> Our team will complete the pathway for women in this country. >> They will see heroes that look like them in person and on the air all summer long. >> Gain inspiration from asia. Wilson, diana taurasi, breanna stewart and kia nurse. They can see that the sport they play as girls. And as women, it's just as important and worth investing in. Because the more we all recognize value and potential of women's sports. The closer we get to a more equitable future in the world of sports. >> Through thick and through heartbreak and triumph and heartbreak. Torontonians consistently demonstrate their passion, their commitment and their love for professional sports. Toronto is also a diversity welcoming city and a progressive city. So it should come as no surprise that when it hosted the first-ever wnba game in canada a year ago. It's sold out and set records for attendance. Broadcast viewership and merchandise sales. >> Theresa rush is a new president of the team after spending 11 years with the raptors as a front office executive resch joined cp24 and spoke about the work that lies ahead to build the new team. >> It's a league full of performing women and to have women leading those teams is, is I think a place where we all when I joined the nba and enjoying the rafters in 2013. I was one of the only women in the front office really on the team side, the technical side and the great thing is that change a lot, even in the last 11 years. So you see a lot more women in decision-making positions on the team side in the nba. And it's great to see the wnba be elevated and some of that same talent in the front offices. >> Mayor olivia chow has declared today wnba day here in the city of toronto.
