The university of toronto has responded to protesters at a pro-palestinian encampment on its campus. What offered the school is making to them in moments. And the city of toronto is celebrating today as the wnba confirms its first expansion into canada is well on its way. Here will have the reaction for you coming up. It's 8:00 24 degrees from 299 queen street west. This is toronto's breaking news cp24. Good evening. I'm sijia liu. Thanks so much for joining us. Our top story tonight. Police have identified a suspect wanted in the shooting downtown early yesterday. 24 year-old adrian gordon of toronto is wanted on multiple charges, including aggravated assault and possession of a loaded restricted or prohibited firearm. Gordon is described as 5 foot 6 with a thin build and clean shaven. The shooting happened before 12:30am yesterday in the area isabella ensure born. Police say a man in his 30's with a gunshot wound was found behind a building. He was rushed to the hospital and remains in critical condition. Police are asking for your help to identify a suspect in an alleged sexual assault at union station. Investigators have released the security camera images of the man they are looking for. A woman tells police she was sexually assaulted on eastbound go train in the station last friday. The suspect was last seen going north on bay street. He is described as 20 to 30 years old, 5 foot 10 with a slim build. He was wearing dark clothing, a baseball hat and carrying a skateboard. Anyone with information is asked to call police or crime stoppers. Gta police services have launched a new campaign to combat street racing project erase, which stands for eliminate racing activity on streets everywhere kicked off at exhibition place this morning. Police from toronto, york peel halton and hamilton and the opp were in attendance. They are coming together for this campaign because they say street racing has no jurisdictional boundaries. >> It's crucial for people to understand the risk associated with illegal street racing and the potential consequences not only for themselves, but for other users of our roads. We want to emphasize the importance of keeping racing activities confined to legal race trucks. This is essential for public safety. We want to encourage the public and empower communities to report dangerous driving and illegal racing activity. These drivers have organized themselves and advertise them eats on social media, routinely encouraging followers to attend. The stunts are often performed in front of groups of onlookers. >> Stand far too close to the dangerous activities that are taking place just to try to capture the next viral video for social media. They're placing themselves in harm's way and they're risking serious injury or worse. >> Stunt driving and street racing carry possible fines of up to $10,000 as well as a 30 day license suspension at roadside. And 14 day vehicle impoundment. The university of toronto has made an offer to the representatives of a pro-palestinian encampment in response to demands from protesters. Cp24's lindsay biscaia joins us live from the university with more on this. Lindsey, what can you tell us? >> Yeah, well at this point siege, as you said, that offer has been given to the students at this encampment. And now as you said, they have 24 hours so until tomorrow to look over this offer and eve or accepted or rejected saw step of the way for those who might not be familiar with this yet. This is the encampment that has been at the university of toronto on campus for the last couple of weeks. Now. We've seen these over all over the states, really. And that's moved into toronto, montreal, other parts of canada students are demanding universities to divest from direct and indirect investments that support israel. Now the school has said today that it will not be cutting ties with israeli universities, but it will explore disclosure of investments, which is one of the demands that these students have been demanding from universities. So now we have to wait and see what happens with this offer. So the offer itself from the university to the students in

this encampment includes an invitation for students to attend the university's business board of governing council meeting, which is on june 19th to present those demands once again as well as a working group to consider options for disclosure and greater transparency of investments. Now if the students do not accept this offer in that time frame, which is at tomorrow afternoon on the university will actually be issuing a trespass so we'll have to wait and see what happens. We tried to speak with students here at this encampment. They said they're not going to be speaking with us sijia until tomorrow, when they make an announcement on what their decision is going to be. They say until then, there's emergency meetings happening right now here in this encampment. While they look over this offer and decide what to do. But we have been hearing from students talking about this encampment in you know why it's here, but also how it's been affecting their last couple weeks of school. Have a listen. >> As a lot of you can see like the, the ongoing encampment on our campus is a very serious issue. It's not a peaceful protest. Its a violation of university policies. And it's a threat to our safety. And since I'm a second, we've seen hateful messages, violent altercations, fires blocked students being barred from entering and it's it's very clear this, this chaos, a completely disrupts our academic life and cannot be tolerated I came here and turned on other universities because they thought this will be a safe place for me as a jew. >> The fact that I'm here today to that this is not true. >> So you can disclose and dive a sign that, of course, is that one of the main demands that the students have been asking the university to do. It doesn't sound as though this offer is direct. Yes, we will do this or no, we won't. But it sounds as though it's the first stop sijia. And now the university says, you know, no matter what happens tomorrow, it is happy to continue negotiating and talking with these students. But we'll just have to wait and see what happens tomorrow afternoon. Okay, we will keeping a close eye on tomorrow afternoon. Lindsay was care reporting live from downtown toronto. Thanks so much. That's one of city councillors are back at it again, continuing to debate dozens of items still on the agenda during the second day of meetings. >> City councillors voted to allow small electric cars with maximum speed of 50 kilometres an hour on streets. E-scooters, though, remain banned on streets, although it is legal to own them in the city. City staff also admitted there was a little police enforcement on the e-scooter ran. >> I think council is not really. >> Taking the issue seriously because people are being harmed not providing rules in place, putting rules in place. I've seen people ride the scooters on the sidewalk, right? I've seen them right all the subways, for example, we saw what happened with the fires is no direction from the city as to what is what is is not being enforced by the police. Don't have the capacity to actually enforce the rules. >> And later this evening, councillor brad bradford will be presenting a motion to make sure the city does all they can to speed up construction on the gardiner expressway. That is significantly stalled. Traffic in and out of toronto. >> The experience on the gardiner right now is an absolute horror show. It's choking our economy, it's killing our small business and it is ruining quality of life for residents here in toronto. The idea that the administration thinks this type of catastrophic delays acceptable for 3 years is that is not on. So the motion that I'm presenting today are a number of key steps to speed up the construction, minimize the impact and get torontonians moving again faster. >> The timeline for the rehab work on the aging expressway is 3 years. City staff are already looking at other options to speed it up. And mayor olivia chow second priority item will also be discussed. It's an official plan amendment to allow townhouses and small-scale apartment buildings on major streets in the city. Staff recommended 6 story buildings with 30 units. But 60 unit buildings are also up for discussion. Liberal leader bonnie crombie has requested an update into the status of the ongoing rain belt investigation. In a letter to the rcmp commissioner crombie says new information reveals closer involvement by premier doug ford and his staff and urges a close review of it. Toronto's currently unnamed team will play out of the coca cola coliseum at exhibition place. It's the first franchise outside the U.S. and is expected to play some games also in vancouver and montreal. Plenty of dignitaries and politicians were on hand for today's announcement. >> We know toronto is a basketball city, I know for others. Hockey fans were in the middle of the stanley cup playoffs here. We've seen time and time again that toronto is home to dedicated and enthusiastic basketball fans will never forget last year's scotiabank arena I attended our toronto game lots of people coming up to me and saying thank you for making my dreams come true. >> By bringing a wnba game here, that's when I knew. This is the right place as we're thinking about expansion. >> First and foremost, this franchise will be canada's team. While our home base will be here right here. Coca cola coliseum at exhibition place in toronto. We will play games in vancouver and montreal throughout the season, uniting the country behind our franchise and inspiring pride and passion in fans from coast to coast. We will always be committed to providing a world-class player and personnel experience for all who represent our city and country through this team. We know that investing in our players is paramount to their success on and off the court. >> This means an investment in expert staff, state-of-the-art facilities and create unmatched home court advantage. That raises the bar for every franchise in the league. >> Wnba team. >> Those sports hero is going to mean a whole lot to a whole lot of teenage kids, especially ones that are not so sure. You know, when you're going up. >> That is the power of sports sports have to you need power to draw us together to unite U.S. >> 2 blurred divisions and build bridges across all the different communities that call toronto home. >> All united in the common love. Off our city, our province and our country. Yes, this an historic moment in toronto sports. >> To reach a rush is the president of the new team after spending 11 years with the raptors at it as a front office executive fresh joined cp24 and spoke about the work that lies ahead to build the new team. >> I'm going higher, first and foremost. An incredible general happen right away with how we have somebody in place at the end of this year. They will then hire a head coach and he was great as I have seen first hand for the last 11 years, how to build a team working for the raptors and in the front masai ujiri, bobby webster, dan tolzman. There's some of the best in the business dana find talent and building a team. And I got to see firsthand that happening for the last 11 years. I'm really excited to find someone to empower them and also provide some insights when they asked. >> And catherine aker, host of the pickup, a wnba podcast joined us for reaction to today's official announcement. >> Huge, I mean everything from merchandise to but also you have like you do the equivalent of what the raptors effect has been right? Like you you know, the raptors have been around for over 25 years. We have a whole generation of kids that grown up with that teen. Now we have like a really strong olympic team that's going to be, you know, going for a medal this summer. And you know, that was, you know, it's bit of a pipe dream. 25 years ago, right? So you know, here we are. And I think like that was huge berg, different kinds of community growth, not just in toronto, but across canada. And I think this is going to have a very similar impact. >> Feels like the start of a new area. And a mayor, olivia chow has also declared today wnba day here in the city of
