that israel is conducting a even the U.S. who been a staunch ally of israel throat. This said they were heartbroken by the number of civilian civilian casualties here. And it all leads into the negotiations that are set to happen in cairo tomorrow, where qatari officials have said that this strike in rafah is expected to be a really severe hindrance. It's important to note israeli officials are going to these negotiations. They worked at the last ones that were hopes that things could progress. It seems like now that might be in doubt. Melissa talks to watch tomorrow for sure. Thanks for that. Ctv's colton praill, appreciate you joining us today. >> A government official in papua new guinea says more than 2000 people were buried alive in a landslide on friday. And they need international help. The figure, which hasn't yet been confirmed, is roughly triple the un estimate of 670 killed in the landslide in the mountainous interior. The remains of only 6 people have been recovered so far. Ctv's tony grace is standing by with more. That landslide hitting friday. While many people were sleeping. The devastation and the scope of it becoming a lot more clear today. The. >> Government in papa new guinea now estimating more than 2000 people were buried alive underneath the debris of that landslide. Here's a little map showing you where it happened. This is a very mountainous region, as you mentioned, not a lot of reliable census data to indicate how many people may be missing or to to check that against figures provided by the local communities. So right now I'm a sense of desperation setting. And here's a look at the aftermath. By the way, this is 6 to 8 metres of earth. And debris. That's that's covering up dozens of homes in the area and part of the problem is that this is such a remote area in the mountains, that it's been difficult to get heavy machinery up there. The first excavator, for example, just arrived yesterday. So act of desperation. In the meantime, people have been digging with their hands with sticks with with garden shovels, anything that they can gather together in order to try to access the area beneath the rubble to try to see if they can get anyone out alive. At this point, we understand that only about 8 people, 8 bodies rather, have been removed from the debris of that landslide, which happened after weeks and weeks of heavy rain. So then there's the question of getting aid in as well. And that's a whole complicated thing itself, todd, because there is a tribal warfare in the area and that means aid workers and experts who are trying to assess the stability of the land have to be shuttled in often with military escorts. So that slows the process down papua guinea's nearest neighbour australia has been among the first to pledge support to offer aircraft, which are expected to be mobilized today and more equipment into the area. But you can just see by these images, todd. But it's just an absolutely devastating and and absolutely unthinkable task in its magnitude to try and help the communities that have been devastated by this landslide. That happened friday. Ctv's tony grace with the latest on that deadly devastation in papua new guinea bill here at home. >> Canada's anti-trust regulator says it is studying the country's airline industry to produce recommendations to improve competition and help customers make informed choices. (Mellow music) the university of toronto says it will meet with pro-palestinian protesters again today after they refused today's 8:00am deadline to leave the campus. Peel regional police unveiling today result of a major auto theft investigation. We'll tell you more about project odyssey in moments. It is four-thirty 24 degrees from 299 queen street west. This is toronto's breaking news cp24. Hello. I'm melissa duggan. Pro-palestinian protesters are joined by labour unions, faculty and staff as they defy a trespass order to leave king's college circle. Cp24's lindsay biscaia is at u of t with the latest. So more talks coming up here today. Lindsay. Yeah, that's right, melissa. So those negotiations last night between the university and students in this encampment to try to find some kind of peaceful resolution. >> That didn't happen, but those negotiations are continuing tonight, starting st about half an hour's time now that this all comes after a trespass notice was filed members of this encampment on friday by the university, trying to get them to dismantle their encampment by today at 8:00am that did not happen. This encampment is still going strong. Doesn't look as though anyone has left actually or at least taking down their tents. And as a result, 8:00am obviously came and went. And now the a university of toronto is filing an injunction to try and evict protesters. So that is where

we're at. The university says it will be filing that injunction and that usually takes day or 2, I would say to actually get a court date for a hearing. So we're waiting to see when that court date will be, whether it's going to be tomorrow or a day after but in the meantime, protesters here say they are not moving until the university meets their demands. They've got 3 demands. One is for the university to cut its ties with israel. The second is for the university divest from companies that are profiting from israel's offensive in gaza. And then the 3rd is to cut ties with certain israeli academic institutions. The university has address one of those, at least just the 3rd one saying it will not be cutting ties with israeli but apart from that, there's been no word on these other demands from of the protesters. And so these protesters once again say they are not leaving until those demands have been not. And as you mentioned, there was a rally this to join in solidarity. Here's more from rally. >> We need commitments right now. We need commitments to divest, to disclose and to cut ties with israeli academic institutions. If you open your eyes to what's happening in rafah and was already happened across gaza, the west bank, you'll understand why we have no choice but to continue negotiations until all demands are met. >> What we are witnessing on this campus and around the world is nothing short of a global movement of students and young people standing up for a better world, a world of peace and justice for everyone. >> And they are holding our leaders and institutions to account in frank. >> The kids are all right. >> So the university send an offer to these protesters. Melissa, on thursday. I believe last week. And that offer was more to get a working group going to bring students to the table when it came to discussions around being transparent and where the university's investments go. However, it wasn't directly addressing the demands that these students have their for those students rejected that offer. And so here we are once again, we're waiting for negotiations to start between the university and the students. And also waiting on that injunction that the university has filed back to and will that meeting just, you know, short time from now make any change here will follow that. Thanks for that. Lindsay. >> Of course, other protests have been held at other campuses across north america university in montreal. It has been granted a partial injunction against sproat held pro-palestinian demonstrators who set up an encampment on that campus. The judge ruling today that safety measures need to be put in place at the you encampment. Protesters have been banned from setting up tents within 2 metres of school buildings. They have also been ordered to keep doors, windows and walls clear of obstructions and allow the fire department to inspect the site. The school argue the protesters posed a safety risk by blocking emergency exit and storing gaf gas in the campus. There was a show of support today for a north york jewish girls school that was hit by gunfire over the weekend. Mayor olivia chow police chief, myron demkiw, they were among those attended a solidarity rally this morning at the bay bush to elementary school. Organizers say today's demonstration was meant to show the school students, staff and families that the community does stand with them. >> Often times you stories on the news its ads and try to be empathetic when it's at home. It's a whole different this is not close to home. This is I spent many hours here day and and it was pretty shocking. >> Incredibly concerned, we've seen a growing rising anti-semitism since october 7th, but we haven't seen something like we've seen this weekend, shooting of this institution right behind me. And we really feel this is not just an attack on this wonderful school. But in talking entire community. And if you look at the stats right now, it was person living in toronto is 5 times more likely to be the victim of an anti-semitic hate crime. Accused person living in new york city. This is the city that we all love. This is very scary and it's dangerous, not just for our jewish community dangerous for the kind of city we all want to live in. >> A probe is under way. Police have said it's too early to determine if the shooting is a hate crime or an act of terrorism. But noted the hate crime unit is supporting the investigation. Residents in some neighbourhoods have been told to expect an increased police presence. Footage of a vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting has now been released. Dashcam video shows a truck passing by a dark suv stopped out in front of the school near dufferin and finch. Surveillance footage from the school shows the

driver putting the vehicle into reverse before coming to a stop. Police say 2 suspects got out of the vehicle, opened fire at the school at around 4.50 saturday morning. It is 4:37 24 degrees. Let's get an early look at roads this with adwoa what's happening out it's low on the list, a very, very tough driving law, the major area highways and then adding to the slowdowns. >> Couple of problems with some of these issues impacting the drive on the northbound 4. 27 happening in the collectors. This is to dundas spending for some time about 2 hours as collisions of the 2 right lanes are blocked, really slow and backed up from the gardener. Also problems that these are brand new issues on the westbound lanes of the 4, a one of through leslie in the express collision in the left lane waiting for emergency crews. They have not arrived on scene yet. So that is what is creating the delay show you the don valley parkway, north. It's not too bad. Starting to brew was a bit jammed. Now it's busiest from north of bayview/bloor continues slow all the way up towards the for a we do some major issues happening outside of camera view on the westbound lanes of the 401 on the approach to 12 1 in milton. Serious collision is in the 2 right lanes. Melissa, I'll send it back to you. A 16 year-old is dead after a shooting in the east end. Let's go live now to cp24 crime analyst steve ryan. He is at the scene with the very light latest. Steve, what are you learning right now? >> So we know according to police, that address on cataraqui crescent was the latest homicide location. It's in the sink clear and ward area in scarborough. Police tell us 1:00 this morning. They responded to an address here on cataract crescent regarding a shooting when they arrived on scene in the gained entrance into one of homes at this location, they found a young male who had been shot. He was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition and the sadly he passed as a result of his injuries. So this is now a homicide police told us earlier on today that it was in fact, a 16 year-old boy who died as a result of this homicide. And he was identified as jamal have. Dana, police are on scene throughout the day. They've been here looking for witnesses, camps in the area going over video surveillance as well. And they are asking for people to contact them if in fact, they had any information pertaining to this shooting happened at 1:00 this morning. There is no word on suspects as of right now. So we can't tell you whether or not this was. Isolated incident was the suspect and the victim going to one another. What is a some sort of random shooting that will come as this investigation progresses. But right now it's at the early stages and the police are looking for witnesses. So if you were in this area here, ward and st. Clair cataract questioned crescent rather is the exact location. You something at 1:00 this morning, the time to be suspicious. Repping sq the police a some like >> Such young victim there. Thanks for that. Steve. Peel police say they have busted a highly orchestrated auto theft ring that they dubbed project odyssey cp24's andrew brennan is here with more on the operation. Andrew. Just a massive amount of vehicles they've been able to get through although when you look at the overall numbers for just the amount of vehicle stolen. >> In peel region, melissa, this is well, drop in the bucket accounts for maybe about 2, 3%, doing some quick math in my head, but you have 360 odd vehicles recovered in this investigation is going back to last fall and that number and of vehicles is one thing, but also the price tag of a rough average of roughly of a $89,000 for each vehicle. 369 recovered and in total, a price tag of 3 high of 33 million dollars in change for the number of vehicles recovered. I should mention that a lot of these vehicles were recovered in and around the gta, but over 100 of them were actually recovered at the port of montreal as they were conceivably about to be sent out of the country to nations abroad, which is really how this the a lot of these organized crime operations, our operating looking to get the vehicles out of canada. These luxury vehicles. You saw a wreath, there was a rolls royce of will among the vehicles on the screen a couple of seconds ago. And then sending them are land rover. I should say my pat, but then going from 2 nations abroad trying to cut them off at the source of getting them out of the country. It's been proving a challenge. That being said with this operation, to see if you will, of the project. Some progress seemingly being made. We heard from the chief of police appeal as well as from patrick brown, the mayor of brampton earlier. And the last 18 months are peel regional police commercial auto crimes unit. >> Has arrested nearly 200 individuals and have laid close to 1600 auto theft related charges recovered close to 100 million dollars worth of vehicles that are vehicles that have not left their country because they've been able to intercept them in repatriate them. >> Auto theft team put themselves in harm's way. They

manage to get back 369 cars, they've arrested 16 who behind this criminal syndicate. 10 there's arrest warrants issued for and so they did great police work I'm so proud of the peel police, they take on difficult investigations and they do their job. Now you can see on your screen, mug shots of some of the people that have been arrested and charged as part of >> Project odyssey. You can see some of the photos are actually not there. So few reasons for that one. Some of the people that were arrested are as young as 17 years old. So under the youth criminal justice act, we cannot identify them, but also some of the people that are included as well are up to the age of 57. Also police alleging some from the same family as well. Now, unless I did mention before that this is really a drop in the bucket situation. So I did some numbers grabbing them from the peel that data portal for crime into 2023. There's 8300 roughly vehicles that were stolen. There's 3,000 recovered for 2023 overall. That leaves about 5300 just for one year reported stolen, not recovered in the value of hundreds of millions of dollars back to well, big numbers there in a sweeping investigation. Thanks for breaking down for us. Andrew. >> Ontario's privacy commissioner says she will publish a special report about the use of non government emails and deleted messages related to the greenbelt. >> The ford government removed land from the greenbelt to build 50,000 homes in 2022 before reversing course on that plan. Reports from the auditor general and integrity commissioner found the process favoured certain developers. The privacy commissioner says her office is working on 19 active access access to information appeals that are similar to concerns raised by ontario ndp leader marit stiles. >> Reports like these are actually quite rare and they're very serious. Information. Privacy commissioners, 2013 special report on the liberal gas plant scandal triggered a police investigation, which eventually sent the liberal premier's chief of staff to prison. The walls are closing in for the ford conservative government. One way or another. The truth about ford's greenbelt dealings is coming out of the back rooms and into the light. >> The rcmp is now investigating the greenbelt removal process. The province has introduced legislation. It says strength to rather to strengthen protections for ontario homeowners and buyers. The government says the homeowner protection act would implement a 10 day cooling off period for the purchase of new homes. It would allow buyers to cancel agreements without any penalties. The province says it will give buyers time to fully understand their commitments and back out if they choose. The legislation would also see consultations held on finding ways to crack down on illegal home building and selling. It is 4:45 24 degrees.
