And they need international help. The figure, which hasn't yet been confirmed, is roughly triple the un estimate of 670 killed in a landslide in the mountainous interior. The remains of only 6 people have been recovered so far. And ctv's tony grace has the latest. >> We'll talk. That landslide hitting friday. While many people were sleeping, the devastation and the scope of it becoming a lot more clear today. The government in papa new guinea now estimating more than 2000 people were buried alive underneath the debris of that landslide. Here's a little map showing you where it happened. This is a very mountainous region, as you mentioned, not a lot of reliable census data to indicate how many people may be missing or to to check that against figures provided by the local communities. So right now I'm a sense of desperation setting. And here's a look at the aftermath. By the way, this is 6 to 8 metres of earth. And debris. That's that's covering up dozens of homes in the area and part of the problem is that this is such a remote area in the mountains, that it's been difficult to get heavy machinery up there. The first excavator, for example, just arrived yesterday. So act of desperation. In the meantime, people have been digging with their hands with sticks with with garden shovels, anything that they can gather together in order to try to access the area beneath the rubble to try to see if they can get anyone out alive. At this point, we understand that only about 8 people, 8 bodies rather, have been removed from the debris of that landslide, which happened after weeks and weeks of heavy rain. So then there's the question of getting aid in as well. And that's a whole complicated thing itself, todd, because there is a tribal warfare in the area and that means aid workers and experts who are trying to assess the stability of the land have to be shuttled in often with military escorts. So that slows the process down papua guinea's nearest neighbour australia has been among the first to pledge support to offer aircraft, which are expected to be mobilized today and more equipment into the area. But you can just see by these images, todd. But it's just an absolutely devastating and and absolutely unthinkable task in its magnitude to try and help the communities that have been devastated by this landslide. That happened friday. >> And residents in fort nelson, british columbia will be allowed to return home today, 2 weeks after being forced out due to wildfires. I'm Russell Oliver,

we also know in the university and students wisad they were negotiating yesterday, starting at 5:00pm. They're going to be doing that again today, starting at 5:00pm. We have received a statement from the university and I'll read part of that for you. Now it says the notice of motion is proceeding normally and will be accessible for the usual process once it's filed at the court at 3.30 university avenue, of course, are talking about the injunction. It goes on to say we continue to engage in discussions with students representing those in the encampment and hope they will bring the unauthorized encampment to a peaceful. And the school has been saying that many other students on campus feel unsafe because of this encampment. And that is why over the course of 25 days now that this has been up and running. The school has been trying to get the students to leave. So we have heard from some of the students who are representing the protesters in the encampment about what is next in about the ongoing negotiations between the university and the students. Here's more on have a listen. >> It's the 3 main demands that remain. Since thursday, when we received the first written offer the ut we sent a counteroffer right kind of the senior demands, what our lines are, what we're actually interested in seeing. And so we presented that to them at the and then they spent, you know, what our trying to caucus and figure out, you know, their next steps and you know, we kind of have to see what happens again. Billy, the ball's in their court right? Students are here. It will continue to be here. They will and meant despite the threats of police, despite the threats of academic, the precautions. >> So just over those 3 main demands. Quickly for you, leena and freddie everyone else who's watching who might know. So the main 3 are the students are asking the university to cut its ties with israel, also to divest from companies that are profiting from israel's offensive in gaza and to cut ties with certain israeli academic institutions out. The last demand. The university of toronto has already side in its offer put to the students last week that it will not be severing ties with other israeli it did not really comment on the other 2 demand. So we'll have to wait and see what happens in these negotiations. Again, that starting at 5:00pm but in the meantime, clearly this encampment here has not been dismantled as the university has leena and these protesters saying they're not leaving until their demands are met. >> Back to you. All right, lindsey biscay at keeping a close eye on this developing story for us. Thank you, lindsay and university in montreal has been granted a partial injunction against pro-palestinian demonstrators, who set up an encampment on its campus. A judge ruling today that safety measures need to be put in place at the eu. Q am encampment. Protestors have been banned from setting up tents within 2 metres of school buildings. They've also ordered in order to keep doors, windows and walls clear of obstructions and allow the fire department inspect the site. The school argued the protesters posed a safety risk 5 blocking an emergency exit and storing gas in the camp. Well, there is a show of support today for a north york jewish school that was hit by gunfire over the weekend. Mayor olivia chow and police chief myron demkiw were among those who attended a solidarity rally this morning at the bay entry school near dufferin and finch. Police responded to a call for shots fired at that school early saturday morning and found a bullet hole in the building. No one was hurt. Organizers say today's demonstration was meant to show the school students, staff and families. The community stands with them. >> Oftentimes you stories on the news its ads and try to be empathetic when it's at home. It's a whole different this is not close to home. This is I spent many hours here day and and it was pretty shocking. >> I'm here to stand with you to say that anti-semitism, it's like cancer. We have to say no. It erodes the boss of empathy and compassion between people. Is saying no to decay over so side into hate and out and absolutely have no place in toronto. >> Incredibly concerned, we've seen a growing rising anti-semitism since october 7th, but we haven't seen something like we've seen this weekend, shooting of this institution right behind me. And we really feel this is not just an attack on this wonderful school. But in talking entire community. And if you look at the stats right now, it was person living in toronto is 5 times more likely to be the victim of an anti-semitic hate crime. Accused person living in new york city. This is the city that we all love. This is very scary and it's dangerous, not just for our jewish community dangerous for the kind of city we all want to live in. >> Police have said it is too early to determine if the shooting as a hate crime or act of terrorism. But noted the hate crime unit is supporting the investigation. Residents in some neighbourhoods have been told to expect an increased police

presence. It is free 36 24 degrees of road this afternoon with our traffic specialist adwoa nsiah-yeboah oh yeah, selling it has been a busy one in a problems piling up as well. Try to make your way home from work and school start issues. A slowing down the commute for commuters on the northbound 427. Through dundas. It is a collision involving a couple of vehicles. 2 right lanes are still off-limits again. So as make your way north, obviously collectors are impacted, but >> Expressing is getting slower, but at least they're not a slow has. Those collectors are backed up on it to the gardiner. And then if your travels that do take it onto the qew. This is a qew niagara-bound. Just past year ontario stalled vehicle does have the right lane blocked. But the good news, if you're heading into the downtown core approaching jameson, we have a collision. It was in the centre lane, keep the good news rolling problems on the westbound 4, 1, to james snow parkway, which were blocking the left lane cleared quickly going to check my renforth cameras back and it is. So this is the eastbound 401 in the express through and forth collision there. It's blocking of the 2 right lanes. More good news if you're but outside of the city, where a headed towards a guelph eastbound 4, 6, north have a long-standing collision from the morning in the 2 right lanes. It cleared, I'll send it back to him. Thank you, as 16 year-old is dead after a shooting in the east end, police are at warden avenue in qatar, aqi crescent today. >> Which is north of danforth road. They say a male youth was shot around 1:00am inside his residence. He was rushed to hospital by paramedics, but was later pronounced dead. He has now been identified as jamal abdi, an asset of toronto. There is no information on potential suspects. Anybody with information is asked to call police or crime stoppers peel. Police say they have busted a highly orchestrated auto theft ring that they dubbed project odyssey cp24's andrew brennan is here with more on this operation. Andrew. >> Alina, the odyssey that peel police took to do in order to get the number of people arrested and the amount of vehicles recovered thus far has been rather for one all the way to the port of montreal. Recovering roughly 33 million dollars in terms of the actual value of the vehicles. There's 369 that have been recovered. The bear look at that in turn, try to break that down. What this tells you in terms of the vehicles that were targeted. These are clearly luxury and above the average price for 369 different vehicles with a price tag of 33 million dollars. That's a $90,000 car on average that was being taken. Now there's been 16 people charged thus far, outstanding warrants for others. We did here as this has become a growing problem in peel region, particularly in brampton, where rates have skyrocketed not only for vehicle thefts, but also 4 that violent carjackings in recent years. We heard today not only from the chief of peel police issue new gender e apa, but also here on cp24. Joined earlier by patrick brown, mayor of brampton. Here's what they told us. And the last 18 months are peel regional police commercial auto crimes unit. >> Has arrested nearly 200 individuals and have laid close to 1600 auto theft related charges recovered close to 100 million dollars worth of vehicles that are vehicles that have not left their country because they've been able to intercept them in repatriate them. >> Auto theft team put themselves in harm's way. They manage to get back 369 cars, they've arrested 16 who behind this criminal syndicate. 10 there's arrest warrants issued for and so they did great police work I'm so proud of the peel police, they take on difficult investigations and they do their job. Now one of the things the police have done and actually we can show you now, some of the people that have been arrested in the outstanding. >> That's are also sought right now, including several people from quebec that believed to be are to be those that are helping facilitate getting these vehicles out of the country by the port of montreal. One thing that that peel police chief did mention today is that they were able to identify a business that was trying to get vehicles out of a lot of garage brampton and ultimately get that these vehicles stolen from the gta out to the port of montreal, nations abroad. But this is ultimately just the first of many steps in this investigation. They're still people outstanding and this is still a problem that's not going away, that's yet. But some good news for some people in gta, potentially, maybe even seeing their cars back back to all right, andrew, thanks so much for this. >> Ontario's privacy commissioner says she will publish a special report about the use of non government emails and deleted messages related to the greenbelt. The ford government removed land from the greenbelt to build 50,000 homes back in 2022 before reversing course, reports from the ag and integrity commissioner found the process favoured certain

developers. The privacy commissioner says her office is working on 19 active accessed information appeals that similar to concerns raised by ontario ndp leader marit stiles. >> I think first of all, and I know you've, of course, viewed dozens of emails that were sent to and received by mister sackville using a g mail account in which documents were shared I I think the premier's chief of staff appears to have repeatedly. Misled the integrity commissioner under oath. And that this is another example of a member of the premier senior team hiding things from the public. So I'm not mincing words.
