CITY24 - Monday, May 27, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. (ET) - Segment #23

>> What we are witnessing on this campus and around the world is nothing short of a global movement of students and young people standing up for a better world, a world of peace and justice for everyone. >> And they are holding our leaders and institutions to account in frank. >> The kids are all right. >> So some background info on this as well enough for those who are maybe just joining this comes after the university gave an offer to the members on the encampment last week and that offer basically gave members and students here a seat at the table when it came to negotiations in the future when it came the school's investment. Although the school did say that they would not be severing ties with israel. Universities and dot was one of the demands that students wanted. So many students here felt that the offer didn't really meet their demands and that it was more of an ultimatum. And there was a notice of trespass issued on friday for that deadline to be 8:00am this morning. So obviously the encampment still remains. Protesters say they are not going anywhere until the university meet its demands by the university and students are continuing negotiations today. Those started last night at 5:00pm and they say they are continuing with those peaceful talks, trying to come to some sort of resolution. But at the same time, as I mentioned, a court injunction has now and the university is asking protesters here to dismantle their encampment and leave the property will have to wait and see what happens when allies on this. Lindsay, this get reporting live. Thank you. Lindsay. >> Well, there was a show of support today for a north shore jewish girls school that was hit by gunfire over the weekend. Mayor olivia chow and police chief myron demkiw are among those who attended a solidarity rally this morning at the bay callum entry school near dufferin and finch. Police responded to a call for shots fired at the school early saturday morning and found a bullet hole in the building. No one was injured. Organizers say today's demonstration was meant to show the students schools, rather staff and families of the community stands with them. >> We were able to the suspects driving up on the street right here, parking right here across the street from where we are right now. They came up the defence and fired shots and they had people waiting for them in the car and then they drove grateful to the federal government. Got us grant a couple years back. Stole the security fence that you see here, which enabled us to have close and they only have to stand behind a fence and they were unable to get onto the property. >> You and your families. >> Have a right to. I came here to tell you you're not alone. We came to say doesn't that is important. That we come together. I know jury community is resilient, is powerful. In canada and in toronto. There's no place for hate. >> We join the chorus of condemnation of this cowardly hateful act. I have seen the security video and I asked myself who are these people so consumed by hate that they would come to a girl's jewish school and opened fire. It is totally shameful. This anti-semitism is a friend to all the values we hold dear in our city to target a school where children learn mitzvahs in tora values. Standing strong. >> We know that they're trying to scare us shies away from our values and who we are, but we're standing strong. We have the support of the community and we trust that, you know, they're going on behind us strong, we can do it together. >> Incredibly concerning, we've seen a growing rising anti-semitism since october 7th, but we haven't seen something like we've seen this weekend to shooting of this institution right behind me. And we really feel this is not just an attack on this wonderful school. But in talking entire community. And if you look at the stats right now, it was person living in toronto is 5 times more likely to be the victim of an anti-semitic hate crime. Accused person living in new york city. This is the city that we all love. This is very scary and it's dangerous, not just for our jewish community dangerous for the kind of city we all want to live in. >> Police have said it is too early to determine if the shooting as a hate crime or act of terrorism. But noted the hate crime unit is supporting the investigation. Residents in some neighbourhoods have been told to expect an increased police presence. >> Switching 11. 0, 7, to degrees out there continues to be a really wet one and that is impacting the drive for lisa morales has a closer look at morning lisa, good morning to you. Leena give you as much of a close look as they can because my cameras are giving me some problems right now. So show you. >> One issue. Thankfully, it's not causing as much of a jam as it was earlier. This is

You can see obviously a whole lot of volume and that's all because of the long-term construction. We have east of jameson. Only the right lane gets by also for a collision. I'll send it back to lead a. Lisa. Thank you. We're following a developing story. A boy is dead after a shooting in the east end. Police are at warden avenue and cataract. He crescent, which is north of danforth road. They say a male youth was shot at around 1:00am and he was pronounced dead in hospital. No word on the age of the boy or if there are any suspects. Keep it here on cp24 as we keep a close eye on this developing story now to queen's park, where ontario's privacy commissioner says she will publish a special report about the use of non government emails and deleting messages related to the greenbelt. The ford government removed land from the greenbelt to build 50,000 homes in 2022 before reversing course. Reports from the auditor general and integrity commissioner found the process favoured certain developers. Privacy commissioner patricia qasem says her office is working on 19 active accessed information appeals that are similar to concerns raised by ontario ndp leader marit stiles. I think first of all, know you've, of course, viewed dozens of emails that were sent to and received by mister sackville using a g mail account in which >> Documents were shared I I think the premier's chief of staff appears to have repeatedly. Misled the integrity commissioner under oath. And that this is another example of a member of the premier senior team hiding things from the public. So I'm not mincing words. I think mister sackville should resign. And if he won't, the premier should fire him. >> The rcmp is now investigating the greenbelt removal process. Liberal leader bonnie crombie spoke out out against the ford government's plan to expand alcohol sales, saying the premier is spending a billion dollars of taxpayer money. Just to roll it out a year ahead of schedule. Our health care system is in crisis, a billion dollars could hire 12,000 more nurses. Our schools are crumbling, a billion dollars could hire 12,000 more teachers or ensure that our schools have proper air-conditioning. So our kids aren't sweating in class. Our roads are gridlocked. A billion dollars could deliver all-day two-way go train service to niagara. But that's not what matters to doug ford. He doesn't care about 2 waiting 12 hours in an er or that your kids are struggling to keep up in the classroom. He's not in it for you or your family. Last week. Last week. Last week premier doug ford announced that beer and wine would be available and convenience grocery and big box stores starting late this summer and fall. A coalition of health groups has already spoken out against the idea, warning that there is no strategy in place to address the increased harms that will come with increased access to alcohol. The province is introducing legislation it says aims to strengthen protections for ontario homeowners and buyers. The government says the homeowner protection act would implement a 10 day cooling off period for the purchase of new homes. It would allow buyers to cancel agreements without any penalties. The province says it will give buyers time to fully understand their commitments and back out if they choose. The legislation would also see consultations held on finding ways to crack down on illegal home building and selling. Well, history is expected to be made at queen's park this week with an indigenous language to be spoken inside the legislature for the very first time. Sol mamakwa, who is deputy leader of the ontario ndp rise in the chamber on tuesday to ask a question in oji-cree family, friends and elders are set to watch from the gallery. This will mark the first time the ontario legislature will allow language other than english or french to be used.
