We're going to break down the accelerated plan to allow beer and wine sales. And cummings was to tell you about the hefty price tag. Plus, could the drive on the gardiner be getting better city hall votes to reopen a crucial ramp onto the highway to help toronto's traffic woes. This is live at 5. >> Good evening, I'm bakari savage and I'm leena latafat. Thank you for joining us to university of toronto has delivered a trespass notice. Organizers of a pro-palestinian encampment. But that protest continues. University says that the deadline to vacate the space king's college circle is now monday morning. But before then, the 2 sides are going to meet again for talks. And this is what turn to cp24. Steve ryan who is live at the ut with the latest eve. You've been there on campus all day. >> Yeah, bakari, the people, the at the university of toronto who are part of this pro-palestinian demonstration as well as some from the outside of sub this encampment behind here at king's college circle. And they've been here since may, the second they have made the 2 specific demands with regards to the university of toronto. And that is that the university to school that's relationship with israel and that the university divest from any investments in israeli companies. School met with u of t faculty yesterday and they were happy with the result of that meeting. They considered a more of an ultimatum. They said that the school said to them that they were not cutting ties with israeli and that they would not divest from any investments right now. But they did offer the school that is offer the students an opportunity to sit at the table when it comes to future investments. But the cabbie up behind all of that was that the students had to vacate the king's college circle behind me here by 4:00pm today. And in a statement issued at 4:00pm yesterday, university said that if the students not lead by 4:00pm today, they would be considered trespassing. So at 4:00pm. We heard from the students at a press conference, a live press conference whereby the student said then that they were not going to. Abide by the university's request and that they're going to stay here. They also said that got another meeting with the school. Scheduled for monday evening at 5.30 at the same time. Guys, why this press conference is going on the

special constables from the university of toronto served a trespass notice on the encampment. It said basically that if they are not out of this encampment by monday, may the 27th at 8:00am the laws will be enforced. This is a first step in a somewhat lengthy process when it comes to charging somebody, a large group that is with trespassing under the trespass to property act. The next step after this notification with the enforcement with tickets up to $1000 fine. And then. That could be arrested if in fact, after several warnings, the people that are at this encampment. Refused to leave. The university can request that the police come in the police then physically remove those people, placed them under arrest, release them on a part 3 summons, which is a provincial offence. Notice with a court date amended court date with a fine up to $10,000. That's a long ways away. The first step is to make sure people are notified as to what they are facing with regards to the trespass to property act. Second step will be enforcement and then the 3rd step will maybe to warn people of the consequences if they don't abide by the school's request to leave this area. The last step would be. A rest removal by the police a charge of trespass to property and a court date in provincial offences court. That is not criminal court, but it's still very serious charge. And 3 have to find the person is convicted on. Here's more from one of the students we heard from earlier today with regards to this entire incident. Lets >> This confirmed with us that they're meeting with us at but that they're moving forward. The trespass notice. That's where we're at right you know, this trespass notice is the first of a much longer you know, these types of things, you know, that you can issue that trespass notice. And then you know, that starts at the wheels turning, but doesn't mean immediately. And the next you know, for 5 minutes that hundreds of cops are going to show up. There's lots of room between now and then. And we implore the administration to the right thing to be on the right side of history to divest from israeli apartheid. And these ongoing genocide? >> So it sounds like the demonstrators will not abide by the request. That sounds like we will not leave as requested by monday morning at 8:00am. If that's the case, guys, you can expect some enforcement to dealt with and that would be my ticket writing and then they'll be some time passing before the last step with the physical rubble, if in fact this to still refused to leave at the request of the university. So about >> Okay, cp24's crime analyst steve ryan reporting live from the campus of the university of toronto. Thanks steve. Areas are soon going to be able to buy beer, wine cider and ready to drink alcohol at a corner store, said the province making the announcement today that they've moved up its plan to expand alcohol sales with availability its convenience stores coming on september 5th grocery stores already with licenses will be able to sell larger cases of beer as of august 1st. And by the end of october, more big box stores will be allowed to sell the lower alcohol beverages like beer and wine. >> This sped-up plan is going to cost taxpayers, though, to the tune of 225 million dollars that money to help out the beer store with the transition as well as to give a discount to convenience stores. And the premier was asked whether speeding up the process is worth that big of a pay >> It's not going directly to the beer store's where it's going to make sure that we protect the beer store employees to make sure they know they're going to be taken care of. We're going to audit every single penny to make sure it's going in the right place. So it's not going into the breweries pockets or anything like that is going to the front line people and who we support to make sure the transition as we go through over the next few years. The beer store plays a critical role in recycling and distribution. And we're going make sure we protect employees. >> Alright for reaction to ontario. Speeding up the expansion of alcohol cells. Let's go live to cp24 sijia liu sijia. What are people saying? >> Bakari, overall people are excited to have more options when it comes to where they buy their drinks. Officials today say this will be a transformation of alcohols market place in ontario, creating thousands of new places where you can pick up a drink. The ultimate goal of premier doug ford said is to give and more choice for consumers. And it will also help local businesses by creating a more open marketplace. People we spoke with on the streets today. Overall, we're very pleased with this news. I mean, there's a reason why we have restrictions on like, you know what, where you can go and lcbo dates and holidays and liked. >> You know, making sure people can buy like a whole bunch of things. But I mean, every other country has convenience stores. So I think we follow them. It might be fine. I think that's a good idea. What? >> Because we couldn't get any look or the other the grocery stores already have it make sense. There's you know, they're selling cigarettes communion I think, you know,

in other places, the more access doesn't necessarily mean the worse it's going to get. >> But not everyone is in support of this expansion. The centre of addiction and mental health sent us a statement will part of that for you here at camh is disappointed that the provincial government has chosen convenience over the health and well-being of ontarians. There are already more than 6,000 alcohol attributed deaths a year in ontario. The changes announced today will significantly increase its number. The main driver of alcohol related harm is convenience and decades of research show that increase ease of access leads to more consumption. And in turn more harm less doctor leslie buckley was ahead of addictions at camh spoke more about the possible harm this may cause. >> It really all comes down to accessibility. So there's multiple studies that show that the single most important lever that impacts the amount of alcohol consumed by a society is accessibility and between mean, by that, we mean price. So the minimum price plus taxes. So the higher the price, the less consumed the hours of availability and the retail density. So you know, all those things are increasing at this point. And we know that that will have an impact in terms of consumption of alcohol. >> In response to these concerns, ontario's finance minister said today that ontario's approach, it is responsible and treats consumers like adults by giving them more convenience and choice. So bakari leena, the date you're watching for is september 5th. That is when alcohol should be allowed in your everyday quarters, >> Okay, more convenient, more choice. But with the big price at cp24. Sijia liu, thanks. Eden. >> The city is trying to alleviate some of the traffic congestion caused on long-term construction on the gardiner. It involves opening the ramp from lakeshore to the westbound gardiner at jameson during the afternoon rush. Okay, so which that's happening right now. Let's go live to cp24's lindsay biscaia. >> Who joins us live with the details. Lindy, were you able to make it there? Okay, >> Yeah, you know what? Actually, the traffic wasn't as bad as it usually is heading west, bakari and leena. And that I'm sure a big chunk of that might actually be because of this ramp you know what, it usually closes around this time, it causes a bit of a backlog on lakeshore. But now that this has started just today, as you both just mentioned, it's now open during the evening rush hour. The whole idea obviously is to try to alleviate some of the gridlock caused by. >> Not only the gardiner being closed for construction, but all the other construction that we're seeing around the in the last couple of weeks and months. So it is exciting. The city did release a statement today and I'll read part of that for you. Now it says the ramp opened earlier this afternoon, the city of toronto's traffic operations centre reports the ramp has been working extremely well to keep traffic moving. Traffic agents are present to assist with the continued flow of traffic and provide feedback to the city about conditions on the ground. The city is also installing additional variable messaging signs and bollards to educate motorists about traffic changes as a result of the ramps reopening. And so those traffic agents that the city reference to not statement, they were they just left about 10 minutes ago, they were directing traffic being very brave, standing on the road, directing traffic between lake shore and the gardiner. But this ramp now is going to be reopened from 2:00pm to 7:00pm monday to friday until october of 2027. While this construction continues. So that should help to alleviate some of the traffic and that gridlock that we're around the city. So definitely some good news today. Just a quick note. Also leena and bakari, there was a crash just pass here on the gardiner and that actually resulted in the wrapping close once again. So if you're here earlier and you can get on that ramp, that is why, but it has since reopened for the evening rush hour. And as of right now, traffic moving smoothly, at least here, it's moving smoothly, actually yeah, that's a good point at lindsay. The scam reporting live, thanks so much. What about the other areas? Let's get a check on that with cp24 traffic specialist azalea hart has it looking. >> Looking at a pretty serious collision happened on the eastbound qew right now, let's take a look at the cameras. This is st. Catharines eastbound ramp at well. We're just going to keep an eye on this collision for now. But all lanes are closed, but we are waiting for some updates here over on westbound 401 bayview one right lane and right shoulder closed. It doesn't seem to be affecting traffic at this time. This is due to a collision that happened earlier as well. And we are keeping an eye on the eastbound gardiner, where there was a collision earlier. Traffic was very heavy volume was both eastbound gardiner and eastbound lakeshore. But it looks like lakeshore has alleviated a little bit westbound on the gardiner from parliament to death for and that's going to take about 25

minutes to get through. And this is kind of your new norm because of the construction happening. 5 on the northbound dvp starts from pottery road to york. Mills still going to take about 30 minutes at this time and out of camera view on the main roads east and westbound lanes on king stand at road at pickering street. They remain closed due to police investigation and eastbound lawrence avenue just after victoria park, the left turn lane and left lane blocked due to a collision that sent back to you. >> This cp24 traffic report is brought to you by 407 etr. Enjoy the journey with a stress free commute. >> Police have charged a suspect with second-degree murder in the death of a man in scarborough. 57 year-old mohammed atta jane died in hospital last sunday was 3 days after he was assaulted with an object during an altercation at a home in the eglinton and birch mount area. 65 year-old john ramp ottawa's and it initially charged with assault and aggravated assault. His charges have been upgraded to second-degree murder. Police say the suspect and victim were known to each other. >> York regional police are investigating a series of shootings at a cinema in richmond hill. They've released this video showing shots being fired. York cinemas, beaver creek road and highway 7. The shots were fired from 3 different vehicles on 3 different occasions. Well, the first time was may 17 shots were fired again 2 days later on may 19th and then again early today, it was around 2.30 in the morning. The shots were fired toward the main entrance of the theatre each time no one was hurt.
