Welcome back. We begin with a significant update of the situation. The university of toronto and a pro-palestinian encampment on its st. George campus cp24. Steve ryan joins us live for the latest details. Steve. >> Lots going on. Let's quickly recap what went on morning. So we heard from students at the university of toronto were pro-palestinian demonstrators say and some outside people have set up here with an encampment since may, the second yesterday, the students met with the university of faculty and the students weren't happy with what was proposed by the university, which was that if they took down this encampment on the students would be invited to the table when it came to the school investing in other businesses in in the future about the school said that they were not cutting ties with israeli schools and they were divesting from the business interest right now. The university also said through a statement that was sent out a 4:00pm that if the students did not leave this encampment by within 24 hours of yesterday, 4:00pm that they would be deemed to be trespassing to a press conference today after the students provided this information. They could not tell us at the time, whether or not at 4:00pm today, they were going to leave as requested by the school at 4:00pm today during a press conference held by the same students. We learned from one of the representatives that they now have another meeting with the university of toronto. Sunday night and at the same time, the special constables here at the university of toronto posted a trespass notice on the gate. And it's a large document. But what the documents has already in parts as notice of trespass to all encampment participants. If you do not comply and remain in the encampment at king's college circle. And frank happens after monday. The 27th of may. 2024 at 8:00am, university will pursue consequences under university policies. And the loss of this is the first step in the school following through with their trespass to property. They are advising these people now that they are trespassing. The next step will be enforcement, which could come after this monday morning deadline. Then after that, if people still decide that they're not going to leave after getting a a summons or a ticket for up to $1000 will, then there could be an arrest may because under the trespass to property act, there is unrest authority. We're by the police law enforcement can't remove somebody from place where they're being requested to leave, if they don't, they are

arrested. They are charged under the provincial offences act under part 3 summons, which means that there are some to court. There's no out of court settlement that could be a fine of up to 10,000. Also. That's all going on right here's more from one of the student representatives. We heard from a short time ago with regards to what's going >> This confirmed with us that they're meeting with us at but that they're moving forward. The trespass and that's where we're at right you know, this trespass notice is the first of a much longer you know, these types of things, you know, they issue that trespass notice. And then you know, that starts to get the wheels turning, but doesn't mean immediately. And the next you know, for 5 minutes that hundreds of cops are going to show up. There's lots of room between now and then. And we implore the administration to the right thing to be on the right side of history to divest from israeli apartheid. Ongoing genocide. So the encampment has been served notice now with the rest of trespass and they have until monday morning at 8:00am to vacate. And it sounds like talking with this woman and others here in the can and that they're not going to leave as requested. So come monday morning, we'll see what the next phases with regards to will there be any enforcement? >> Which involves ticket writing and then we'll see from back to you. >> I brian, thank you so much for that. Recap that we continue to follow other breaking news. Crown prosecutors say a deadly shooting at a mississauga restaurant was the result of a plot from a group, but pledged allegiance to the terrorist group. Isis. 5 people were shot at chicken land near the collegeway and glen erin drive in may. 2021 25 on a was killed in the opening address in brampton this week. Crown attorney david to rory o said that aca was planning to turn others in the group. To authorities, so they decide to kill him and his family. And I'm not on rosa. And that cash about see are all charged with one count of murder and 5 counts of attempted murder. The charges have been proven in court testimony continued today. Come here, of course, is cp24. As we continue to follow this developing story. And york regional police are investigating a series of shootings at a cinema and richmond hill. They've released this video showing shots being fired at york cinemas near east beaver creek road and highway 7. The shots were fired from 3 different vehicles on 3 occasions. The first time was on may. 17 shots were fired again at 2 days later on may 19th and then again earlier today around 2:30am the shots were fired towards the main entrance of the theatre. Each time no one has been injured '03 suspect vehicles described as white four-door pickup truck with a black cargo bed cover a red suv with silver rims and a dark-coloured suv with black rims. Region police are appealing for information. Tips can also be left anonymously with crime stoppers. And ontarians will soon be able to buy beer, wine cider and ready to drink alcohol at corner stores. The province announced today that they have moved up their plan to expand alcohol sales with availability at convenience stores coming on september 5th grocery stores who already have licences will be able to sell larger cases of beer as of august. 1st. And by the end of october, more big box stores will be allowed to sell the lower alcohol, including beer and wine. This sped-up plan is going to cost taxpayers, though, about 225 million dollars. That's going to be helping out the beer store with this transition as well as giving a discount to convenience stores. Well, how the community groups have expressed some concerns about the increase access to alcohol and a lack of measures in place is address the harms that go along with this premier ford was asked about that this morning. >> We take this very seriously. We put more money into mental health and addiction than any government in the history of this country, in the history of this province. And we're, we're doing a fairly well without and it's going to be a we're going to continue working with people that need help and and support. Not a mention on on the health care too. Our healthcare spending since we've been in office has jumped over 30%, never been done before. >> Well, some of the people we spoke to today are supporting the plan. Others don't think it's the right call. Cp24 sijia liu joins us live with reaction season. What are people saying? >> Well, still overall, people are supporting this move. I mean, long gone are the days where you can only buy alcohol at beer stores in lcbo, like you mentioned september is the date we're watching for where alcohol will be available at your everyday corner store officials are calling this a transformation of the alcohol market place in ontario and it will also help local businesses by creating a more open and competitive market. As for consumers, everyday people, this means you'll be able shop at thousands of more places for your ready to drink alcoholic beverages in the people we spoke to today. For the most part, we're in favour of this idea. I mean, there's a reason why we have restrictions on like, you know what, where you can go and lcbo dates and holidays and liked. >> You know, making sure people can buy like a whole bunch of things. But I mean,

every other country has convenience stores. So I think we follow them. It might be fine. I think that's a good idea. What? >> Because we couldn't get any look or the other the grocery stores already have it make sense. There's you know, they're selling cigarettes communion I think, you know, in other places, the more access doesn't necessarily mean the worse it's going to get. >> Now not everyone is in favour of this expansion. The centre of mental health and addiction released a statement that says, you know, the government is choosing convenience over health saying there are around 6,000 alcohol attributed deaths in the province. We spoke to a top doctor at camh who says there needs to be a lot of safeguards in place in order to pull this off safely. >> Careful about serving and selling, making sure that people are certified for selling alcohol product, making sure that the alcohol is kept, you know, away from other areas, putting labels on alcohol to talk about you know, the harms from alcohol and then of course, you know, health promotion strategies. So we're really worried about violence and domestic violence, which is already seeing increases. And we know how to link that is to alcohol. We're worried about duis. So we need, you know, health, we need health promotion, we need to, you know, talk up the harms of health so that people understand that better. >> The alcohol expansion isn't happening just yet. September 5th is to date. The rollout is expected to go out to corner stores and by august first, you should be able to buy large cases of beers at your grocery stores that are already selling beer >> Alright, siege outside the beer store. Thanks so much. Appreciate that. Well, in an effort to alleviate some of the gridlock in and out of the city. Councillors have voted to reopen an important ramp onto the gardiner expressway. Cp24's of a scare joins us live with the details. Hopefully from a safe distance. Yes, you are, how are things? >> Yeah, from assays safe distance feel I can say the same thing with enforcement people behind me who are directing the traffic right now, but we are right at the on ramp that has reopened for evening rush hour traffic. This just happened today. I think it's really good news for a lot of commuters that really opens things up on the lakeshore and on the gardiner as well. So this ramp behind me, this the ramp on to the westbound gardiner from lakeshore heading west and now city council just today that this ramp will be open between 02:00pm to 7:00pm every day until october 31st. 2027 to help alleviate traffic. So it is some good news. We have a statement from the city and that reads in part, the ramp opened earlier this afternoon. So happened right away. Tonight, the city of toronto's traffic operations centre reports the ramp has been working extremely well to keep traffic moving. >> Traffic agents are present to assist with the continued flow of traffic and provide feedback to the city about conditions on the ground. The city is also installing additional variable messaging signs and dollars to educate motorists about traffic changes as a result of the ramps reopening. Saw a quick note for anyone who might have been around here earlier today. This ramp actually was close once again for a short period because of a crash in the area on related to the ramp. And looks as though at this point, todd has since reopened and now feel it seems that topic is going to be moving a little bit better because now not everybody has to go on to the lake. Sure, if they want to head west out of the city in the evening. So hopefully this alleviates a little bit of that kind of soul sucking gridlock we've been seeing recently. Just keep in mind, obviously, if you are headed this way, be aware that specialists are on the road actually directing traffic onto the ramp a little bit. So just be careful if you're in the area as well. >> All right, thank you very much. The end of sky with the well, the ndp held a news conference today calling for action to help families facing a certainty for the province's latest funding delay. The news conference comes after the provincial government told childcare centres that it will implement a new way of funding the national 10 dollar-a-day program starting in 2025 many daycares are warning about a risk of closure if a funding formula isn't soon updated to cover the actual cost of providing care. Ndp mpp. But to cup. Spoke about the impact these funding delays have on daycares across the province. >> Sunnyside is a not-for-profit centre. And the whole aim is to not make a profit to be able to provide this service for families in the community. Just up the street. We had only daycare, a for-profit centre withdraw from the 10 dollar-a-day childcare program because of the implementation problems, the lack of funding and the uncertainty around the funding formula. The ymca, one of the

largest child care providers in the province is also experiencing the same challenges. They're losing $32,000 per child for infant care. >> Just go to from the ontario coalition for better child care says that the province's approach does not match the approach of others throughout the country. >> What is the difference between ontario's approach versus others. And in the other provinces. Ontario, specifically scraps their planned increases, which account for inflation or just planned increases since the was implemented. So I like other provinces who have actually increased their their contributions, which makes perfect sense when you're building a system from the ground up, they have flatlined it. And that has been likely the significant difference in why this hasn't ruled out in ontario, the same way it has across the country. >> 92% of licensed childcare providers have out that into ontario's $10 a-day program. Well, it is the first day of advance voting in mississauga's mayoral by-election. Voters can cast their ballots at mississauga city hall today and tomorrow.
